Best irons ever made?

Can't read the whole thread but imagine there is a lot of praise for Ping Eye 2, which I'd agree with for the most part. They're kind of like the '57 Chevy of golf clubs. I think, though, that the Tommy Armour 845 was actually a better all around club from that era, but got eclipsed by the Eyes. Still have both and my youngest son is playing the 845s. Every time I hit them I'm amazed at how good they really were. Much less offset and thinner lines than the Pings, but I think every bit as forgiving.

I had a set of Eye-2's and 2 sets of 845's ( DG S300 & Stock stiff). Both great set of irons.

I love stumbling across threads like this, been a great read looking at the pictures of people's favourite irons....but here's mine:

Blade iron: mizuno tp9

 

Cavity back: like many have said the eye2 are most probably the greatest iron ever made and I used them for years but it's not my favourite iron.

 

My favourite iron and I still use them today are: Ping karsten III (rails 1977). Just a brilliant iron design and as good as anything out there today

I am biased to the mp14 and glad so many others are as well, but the 33 probably is maybe mizunos most iconic.

 

No one mentioned the FG 17s that I saw, that is up there.

 

I also love the love that the 962s are getting so much love. Great set.

 

The best thing I have ever hit are the miura small blades, your mileage will of course vary.

Still got my fg17s.....fantastic irons! You learn how to strike a ball with these. I get them out a few times a year so I can appreciate that I used to be good....sadly those days are long gone ha ha

Best irons ever for me is the Adams MB2s. Heck, I have gamed them since 2011, easily over 600 rounds and still counting. I have an itch for something new. Thinking about some muira 57s. We shall see! Every time I have tried to replace them, the new set lasted maybe 4 or 5 rounds,

Epon, Epon, Epon!! Had never heard of these irons before and had my heart set on a set of Miuras but hit the softest, sweetest sounding 7 iron of my life with an Epon 502.

Agree with the MP60’s; played them for over a decade.

 

It was nostalgia and humbling to go thru injuries and swing changes to redeem low scores.

 

It was a trial period when you lose your strength, learn a new swing and bend the irons up 4*; it’s a testament to Mizuno quality and the spirit of the game.

Well, I wont venture to say what were the "best" irons of all time, but I can give my favourites in multiple categories:

 

Blade: Titleist 681, had some great weight to them, nice low ballflight, and some of the softest feeling blades i've ever hit. FWIW these are my favourite irons of all time in any category.

 

 

^^^ These. What also set them apart was the wooden dowel in the hosel to greatly reduce vibration and the constant offset on all of the irons. Such a shame that they were never tested for conforming grooves. It is the only reason I stopped using them since I couldn't use them in competitions.

Epon 502s. Never thought i would play any Japanese clubs but they more than get the job done and amazing softness. Longest I’ve ever held in to a set of irons

Any 'best' thread is subjective to the point of being silly. With that said, two things stand out as being very special to me: 1) anything based off of the Kyoei KCM-01 open model (man, if they made that smaller!), and 2) the Miura Small Blade (Baby Blades) - not the MB001 (despite being the prettiest blade at address I think I've ever seen is meh in the feel department) - the Baby Blade is just outstanding. Between the two, I could play either happily any day, but if I had to choose one it'd be the Baby Blades - there's just nothing like it.

What are the criteria? Best looking or best playing? If you are going for best playing ie...best scoring irons I think you might be mad to not choose an iron that is modern.

If it’s an older iron then it better be in your bag or you are a fool.
