Help me plan my Scottsdale/PHX golf grip

Recommended Posts

I am planning a golf trip to Scottsdale with a few friends for the first weekend in March (3/1/13 - 3/5/13) We'll be flying in and renting a car. Can someone recommend a few decent hotels to stay at that is near a few golf courses? For golf I'd like to keep greens fees reasonable, <$100 a round if possible, closer to $70 if that's doable. Will the courses rent clubs? What courses should we consider playing? I'd like to have the trip mapped out before we go. Thanks.

This is a really tough question....hotel budget?

You could see if you could get a deal at Radisson out at Wekopa and use that as a base for a bunch of good courses.

You could stay a little more cheaply in the South Scottsdale area and then have a larger number of choices.

You could stay in the Chandler, Phoenix or Mesa area and have a drive to a few places.

For $100>>>70...then Vista Verde, Las Sendas, Legend Trail, Quintero for sure. .....then you can sprinkle in Vistal, Papago, Longbow, Legacy, Southern Dunes.....all depending how much driving you want to do.

Where are you flying from? A few of us were planning a similar trip, but are on a tighter budget. Flying in to Mesa can be easier/cheaper, depending where you are flying from.. I know you cannot change this, but playing after the Easter weekend is cheaper as rates apparently come down. On all the golf trips I have been to (without the wife!), the hotel is usually just a place to crash after a long day of playing golf, so as long as it is clean and central to where you are playing, it's a go. Less on the hotel means more on golf :)

Enjoy the trip!

March is Spring Training and golf courses have some of their highest rates of the year at this time. No chance are you playing We-ko-pa, Legend Trail, or Quintero for less than $150, maybe more. Not sure about the others.

...there are always deals to be had!

Also....

I have covered this before...but you could also buy the wekopa pass and get the pass rate of $90 and if it was bought now the pass would be $159. Making the rate $130 and instead of $225 and if you play both courses it is even less. You could sell the pass afterwards and get some money back too.

In addition to the Wekopa courses, with the pass you get discounts at Longbow(~$75), Raven(~75), Eagle Mtn(~94), Mcdowell Mtn(~70), Tatum Ranch, and even Talking rock in Prescott($85) plus some lesser courses(Foothills, Duke).

So the pass is well worth it if you are going to play a few courses.

Took a look at bookit for your time here....Scottsdale stuff was way out to lunch pricey.

I saw Wildhorse Pass for $177. This is a great hotel with the casino attached. Only thing is it is in the Southeast valley. But there are 2 courses at Wildhorse Pass that are good plus it is closer to Southern Dunes and the Duke and Raven South Mountain. Plus Vistal is not too far either.

So if you don't mind a few drives...btw it is not tough drives here in Phoenix(IMO)...then this is a great deal. The hotel is really nice. Saw AZ Grand has rooms for $110...these are not the best and the course there is putrid...but it is decent.

I really don't have much to offer about lodging just because I live here. But when I travel, I prefer the condo route. If you are not into resort amenities (which will definitely come with a price in March - high season) check out vrbo.com. you might find a condo with kitchen and several rooms for much less than hotel rooms.

Is Greyhawk a good place to stay? There are a few condos at The Edge at Grayhawk on vrbo that I'm looking at.
[/quote]

Decent. This would be North Scottsdale...so it is a little longer drive to get to the main parts of Scottsdale. But there are s few things to do in the area.

Mastros is up there for steak. Cave Creek is not to far if you stay in that area. Plus plenty of other courses.

A few good bars.

All in all, not bad. Comes down to how much you mind driving.

If you need a really good club fitting you could go to Cool Clubs!

I hope you have a car GPS. I'm really glad I brought one with me. Saved a lot of headaches. Didn't play Greyhawk, but ate there one evening. Really huge portions. If you take your own clubs I would recommend a "desert club", but by March the snakes should be coming out and you might not even go into certain areas.

Longer drive as in 30 to 40 minutes? How much does cool clubs charge that is something I'm in the market for.

30 minutes will get you to most of the key spots in tempe, scottsdale, north phoenix. It is much longer if you want to go down southeast/west.

Cool Clubs charges between 100-150 per each type(irons, Driver, etc.)

Can you recommend a different area? What about the course list I came up with (see pdf in the link)? I I've never planned anything like this before. Any tips? Have some buddys coming into town during the same period. They rented a 5 room house at Estrella Mountain Ranch via VRBO for 1200 for the week, it will hold all 10 of them. We are playing EMR for 150.00 per day. All you can play, one dozen proV1's and a lunch each day.

This is not true this year. The Wekopass is no longer associated with obsports, so you won't be getting those special rates. Buy a wekopass and expect to play every day at wekopa.

I went with a troon az golf card this year. Much better.

Didn't notice that! Thanks for highlighting. But it is still worth it for how much I play wekopa. And still worth it for someone going to play once...you still save!

Well if you are willing to pay 195 for Legend Trail, you should do what I said and play Wekopa both courses!

Not sure what your group is into. But if you like bar scene possibly look for a house near Tempe...Mill. Maybe you can find a house in the more central Scottsdale area.

Trip looks good no matter what...enjoy.

true, just for someone from out of town who comes once or twice a year, he will be stuck at wekopa all week, Not that there is anything wrong with that.

if you get a wekopass, it's not valid at the OB sports (other) facilities, but you're right if you get a pass from another ob sports club, you get a decent discounted rate. However, it's no different than the AZ resident rate.

My guess is that gives ob sports more profit, because most people will want the wekopass at the higher rate who could care less about playing at other ob sports clubs.

After having both a wekopass and troon card, I just prefer the variety of the troon card.

Also, the troon card gives you a tremendous 2-for-1 offer one time use at each club. And I love playing troon north, boulders, talking stick, quintero, gallery golf club(private) - and a discounted rate at kapalua.
