Wish I had this seen this thread. I feel bad for creating a new thread.

Anyway, here is a question.

I want to cut my RBZ driver shaft from 46 to 44". I believe 0.5" = 3 SW, which means about 12 SW. My understanding is 12 SW = 24g of weight.

Would I be able to bring SW closer to target by installing lighter grip (25g from 46g multicompound grip) and 10g screw on RBZ weight port? 10g screw weight is the heaviest screw I found on eBay.

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. I found cool video about hot melt here.

Most likely, I will need to have a shop pour in about 24g of hot melt in the RBZ driver head if I want to cut ~2" of shaft. Does anyone know how much a shop would charge for hot melt job?

Thanks - I just went to the garage to cut RBZ driver shaft by 1.5" and install new grip. Didn't want to cut 2" as I can choke grip down 0.5" easily.

My plan is to install 10g screw on weight port, which leaves me with ~10g of additional weight needed (hot melt, etc).

1.5" shorter shaft = 18g of SW needed - 10g screw + 3g existing screw = ~10g of additional swing weight.

I would suggest just hitting it first before you do anything, you may like it the way it is, if not, you have a reference point for adding weight to the head

The "rule of thumb" that says 2g per swingweight point actually only occurs around 38.75" club length. At 44" (per DSFI), you need 1.65g per swingweight point, which comes to 20 grams for your 12 points.

There's always lead tape. Much easier than hot melt or anything else inside the head. And much easier to remove if you find you've gone farther than you want. :)

Thanks. Looks like I will need to add 20g of weight. This is what I plan to do.

Add 5g of weight using heavier screw and GP tour 25 grip (25g). It won't be perfect, but better than nothing. Will try lead tape if necessary.

It is a major case of jumping to conclusions to extrapolate from this statement:

"Some experience clubmakers find that the vast majority of golfers they fit for drivers end up with a custom driver of around 44" length"

To this completely unrelated idea:

"I would hit my driver better if I chopped two inches off and added a bunch of weight to the head".

The 44" drivers Tom Wishon reports fitting to golfers are most certainly not a 46" off-the-shelf driver that has been butt-chopped and then tip-weighted and head-weighted to hell and back in an attempt to regain the original feel and balance.

Had a chance to test my RBZ driver at the range after cutting shaft by 1.5". To my surprise I couldn't really tell the difference.

Anyway, I plan to install heavier screw on the head and GP tour 25 grip.

Anyone know what the average length of 3 wood is used on tour?

great question. Im curious. I cut my g25 down to 42.5. I did have to add lead tape to get SW back. Tried without tape first, too light. Now its at D1.

I've gone from a 45.5" driver down to a 44.5" driver and have found more fairways without a noticeable loss in distance.

This morning I took my R1 in and had it taken down to 44.25 and it was still at D5.5 with my Fuel TS installed. To bring it down some more I had it counterbalanced with some lead tape under the grip and it's now D3.5. Hit it today and it's so much better. No distance loss and hitting it farther then it's stock length and my gamer which is 44.5. Never again will I play a driver longer then 44.5 and it feels so much more comfortable being only 5'6".

My current set up is:

14* 3 wood 42.5

For those who have not done this yet.... Stop everything, Do not go past go, do not collect $200, go straight to the garage and cut your driver down. You will not regret it.

HAHA I'm thinking of heading to the PGA Tour store to get one of my shafts cut down.

I'm playing a Harrison Mugen Proto 70S in my driver and it plays about 43.5" in the RBZ Stage 2 Tour. I'm hitting more fairways and if I miss them, it's less penal. Length is no different than the 45" AD-DI I had initially, and the dispersion is way better. Launch is low and the Harrison shoots low bullets that run forever.

Chopped my Tour Edge XCG4 Exotics motore factory shaft down to 44.25", and this weekend I reached parts of the Fairways never visited before from the tee. It was fun.
For grins last night I put on an impact sticker to confirm contact, 25 swings. Unbelievable the consistent contact right smack dab center face thru entire swings. Only wish I tried this at the start of the season, not the middle!

At least it only took you 1/2 a season. I had my Callaway cut down and was loving it. Forgot about it - starting ho'ing drivers again, and struggled for 3 seasons before I found the Callaway in the closet.......

The grip solution will not change the true swinging weight, but it will change the number on the scale. Grip weight should be ignored.
As a club builder I completely agree with this satement
What does it do then? Change the feel? Lighter grip will make the head feel heavier, lower balance point? Heavier grip will make the head feel lighter, raising balance point? Thoughts?
