Knockit:

Generally, casting is pouring molten metal into a mold.

Forging involves heating a billet of steel, then pounding it into a shape.

These two processes each use steel that is quite different from the other. Well, almost always.

What you are describing is CNC milling from a billet-- if I understand correctly.

Cameron putters, and Larue uppers/lowers, are done that way.

I'd still love a rough estimate per club, assuming huge Vokey quantities, of the added cost of producing the same club through the forging process. More than five bucks? Fitty Bucks?
What I'm saying is Vokey's marketing lit (if you take it as honest) rules out much difference in material - if you claim mild carbon steel (which they do) you are claiming it is grade 1xxx vs. something like 8620 steel. 1xxx (like 1020 or 1018) is the very same soft stuff that is typically used in traditional 'forgings' - see something like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SAE_steel_grades

It sounds like Vokeys are cast into a mold (melted billet, poured into wedge shape) then the grooves and maybe logos and stuff are milled on.

Whereas with a Cameron you take a billet and just cut everything away that doesn't look like a putter. What I was saying is that this particular process strikes me as basically the same as 'forged' if the argument for forged is that it better preserves the grain of the metal.

My original question was whether or not Vokeys are milled in this same way, and it seems like the answer is no. However, Vokey claims they're using the same actual grade of metal as a forged club.

Cast from a soft metal? When? 2002? SM4s are rock hard. Hope the SM5s are softer and offer us a good ol' fashioned raw finish...
SM4s spin like a mother but theres no comparison feel wise to.a.Mizuno wedge.on full shots and around the greens. Titleist could offer a forged Vokey and sell a lot at $175. Cleveland and Mizuno charge the same for a forged wedge that Titleist does for a cast wedge hows that?

Does anyone have the graphic that listed the loft/bounce combinations in the new SM5s? I went through a few threads and couldn't locate it (the link I found to it no longer worked). Thanks.

I am assuming the raw black finish will eventually rust? I wonder if you can dip these in coke to remove the black.

I'd like to know this as well

Going to get the SM5 58K raw black once it is available to take the place of my Ping TourS rustique 58. Can't wait, but wish they still offered the oil can to match up with my SM4 52*

Yes

Was that yes to easily removing the finish or rusting?

I have found soaking in CLR works best to remove oil can and leave a raw finish.

It's yes to both. The black is just a coating over a raw head that will come off with coke, or just play for a couple of months and the finish will wear off and it will rust in either instance.

There's been some good pics in the Tournament photo threads of the new SM5's so I put some in here to see the different grinds coming. Some of them have some extra grinding on them but still. I can't wait to get my hands on a few of these. I'd like to know specs & more specifics of whats new and different on these soon...
