What are the top 5 courses you've played?

And what ones were overrated?
I tend to follow the course rankings each year. I have been fortunate enough to play a handful of them, but have been surprised that my experience and opinions haven't always matched up with their rankings. There is a lot of subjectivity here, so this should be fun for discussion purposes.

So for ease of discussion, list the top 5 courses you have played and list your most overrated course you have played.

Here are my top 5:

Pine Valley

Merion East

Whistling Straits

Doral

Blackwolf Run

I would say that Merion (based on it's high ranking) was the most disappoing of the five. Get my vote for most overrated.

    Pablo Creek

    Trump National LA

    Tobacco Road

    TPC Sawgrass

    St. Andrews

Most overrated has to be TPC Sawgrass to me but I will say that growing up down the street and working there made it a lot less special to me than it is to most people. Playing it 4 days a week for a year and about once a month all through high school made it very nice but not as special as it probably should be to me.

    1.Pebble Beach

    2.Spyglass

    3.Torrey Pines

    4.Olympic

    5. PGA West -Stadium

I thought PGA west stadium was overrated and not real enjoyable to play , would much rather play Palmer private, or the Nicklaus course

I've never played Merion, but I caddied for a friend there in the US Am a few years ago. I have to agree with you, I was a little letdown. Not many memorable holes. It will be interesting to see what happens when the US Open goes there.

I've played quite a few good courses - some of which are probably unheard of out of the UK. But easily the most overrated course (for me anyway) is St. Andrews. I've played it more than once too.

    Crikey. Tough one.

After a fair bit of thought, I've narrowed it down to the following five. I've been lucky enough to play quite a few really good ones, but these are the best in my view:

    1) Turnberry (Ailsa)

    2) Royal Troon

    3) Wentworth (West)

    4) St. Mellion (Nicklaus)

    5) Woodhall Spa

Honourable mentions to Royal Birkdale, Sunningdale (Old), Walton Heath (New), Woburn (Duke's), Hillside, Ganton, Alwoodley, Trevose, Saunton, Little Aston, Ferndown and Liphook.

Overrated tracks are topped by (gasp!) St Andrews (Old) with the Brabazon Course at The Belfry and Forest of Arden not too far behind.

+1 on Tobacco Road. One of the best secrets in golf and an absolute must for anyone in the area playing the Pinehurst resort courses!

I've been playing for 35 years and the hardest course I've ever played would have to be The Club at Olde Stone in Bowling Green, Kentucky. I played in the Ky. Senior Open there and it was brutal. Eleven players quit after the first round. I would have to think hard about the next four.

Overated...hmmm. That's a tough one. If I have to choose, Olympic, but I'm not really saying it's overated. It's a great course, but I could understand a first time visitor not being blown away by it.

Tobacco Road?? No way, although it is a great property and is in great shape, about half the holes there have some absurd dogleg or blind shot

    Pebble Beach

    Spyglass Hill

PGA West Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course

Bajamar Mexico - at $60 parts of it felt like Pebble Beach - can't beat that.

    TPC Surgarloaf

    Local favorites.

Industry Hills IKE - Southern California

    Oak Quarry - Southern California

    Overated

PGA West TPC Stadium - just not fair or fun.

Torrey Pines - unless you are a resident of San Diego - not worth the greens fee.

Trump National - felt like there should have been a windmill you had to hit through. Felt too gimmicky.
