Spent an hour doing searches online and still no answer. Probably something totally obvious. Can anyone enlighten me as to what "JP" stands for or means when referring to their wedges (I think they also had some JP woods around '84. One of those things that will drive me nuts until I know what it means - Thanks

Joe Phillips, master club designer for Wilson. At the time, we all thought it was for Jerry Pate who was a staffer... laugh.gif

In 1987 the Staff JPII 55 degree was the cat's meow. Staff was so popular back then. I wore out 2 of them in the 80s.

doesn't get better than this

I remember the JP IV sand wedge in BeCu. It didn't need much cleanup on the sole. It was a great wedge in it's day.

Seve liked a JP wedge or two.

Remember the chip at Lytham's 18th? The one that you swear will fall in every time you watch it? That shot was hit with a JP sand wedge.

Faldo was another man who saw some success with a JP; and Payne Stewart was also a man who bagged one for a while. A beryllium one in his case.

Classic wedges.

I played my best golf in high school with an old, worn out JP IV BeCu 55* sand wedge an older kid handed down to me, couldn't miss inside 50 yards, was also $$ anywhere around the greens, either bump/run or open up blade and flop...little did I know back then over 24 years ago, I'd never be as good as that inside 50 yards, I'm just average nowadays...

According to Mike Doherty's online Classic Golf Club Identification reference volume on page 72

Joe Phillips was the PGA Tour equipment services representative for Wilson.

The "JP" wedge grinds were due to his involvement with Wilson Staff players on Tour.

And as we know, there were quite a few Wilson wedges in bags of players who were not on their staff.

Doherty's reference volume also has a photo of a club with the MacGregor "Double Service Wedge" stamp.

Wedges with special grinds have been around for a while, were the direct result of equipment representatives with tour players.

Rex, would you be so kind as to post a link to the Doherty online reference site you mentioned? I am ashamed to admit that I am unable to find it.

Thanks in advance!

Thank you sir!

Wow, what a site! I'm probably as bad or worse a junkie for swing theory as I am for old equipment. May be months before I get out of there!

Was reading the posts on JP wedges and was wondering if anyone could shed any light on another JP mystery
Years ago I acquired a Joe Phillips driver and have never been able to determine if it is the same Joe Phillips
that designed for Wilson or since this is not that uncommon of a name someone else. It has a shaft band that
reads " Handcrafted gold club Williston Part N.Y.

I have a couple of the Harmonized sand wedges, and one of the lob wedges, and to my eye they are cast stainless copies of my JPII sand wedge and TK60 lob wedge.

A nice alternative if you happen to run across one. Should be more than a few of them out there as they sold them in stores for years.

[/quote]One of the guys in my regular group who was and still is one heck of a player carries a well worn and used 56* Harmonized Wilson wedge. He is money in the bank anywhere he uses that thing. he is strictly "old school" on that He carries only a PW and that 56*. Actually that wedge is an exact duplicate of a Sarazen signature wedge I have along with an Arnold Palmer stamped one. I had thought of gaming that Sarazen one but it has the original leather grip with the flattened end for the left hand that the USGA deemed non-conforming many years ago. It is in such good shape I would not dare cut it off to install a modern grip. Actually on the Palmer one I mis stated I do not have it anymore It was either a remake or had been redone and I gave it to a friend of mine for a display in his shop. I have a 55* JP and a 56* JP that I bent to 58* with a little sole grind. In fact those were the two wedges I was coming to the house to get when my friend lent me the Cleveland 588s which he ended up giving me that I hit so good. But I am a wedge ho and do switch around so those 2 JPs may find their way back into the bag before it is over

Picked these up off of the 'Bay. Feel great. I did notice on the sand wedge the J-P has a dash between the letters versus periods or nothing at all. Wonder if this has any significance.

Tom-

Its' plausible your Staff Sand Wedges were grinds for specific staffers-

The J-P could be one of those first grinds for Wilson Tour Rep Joe Phillips, or for longtime Wilson staffer Jerry Pate, or even Jesper Parnevik

The T-K 60 degree grind could be one of the first grinds specified by Staffer Tom Kite just before he left Wilson and went to Ben Hogan.

The K grind Hogan wedges are what came afterwards.

Note the "TK" script is similar to the "JP" script found in those models offered by Wilson for Joe Phillips.

As stated before, Wilson is no longer honoring requests for more information on their custom grinds.

just added a Harmonized wedge to the collection and the comparison to a JP II is something many members have spoken about.

thought some pics would be helpful.

there was no shaft label on the Harmonized club, steps are different than my 58 Dynapowered.

it has the OEM Wilson wrap grip.

when was making room in the wedge bag, I noticed these have some similarities,

a Staff Patty Berg SW, and one of my older Vokey 56* .

look at these two side by side.

square toe, round toe - similar toplines.
