I would laugh my fat arse completely off if he were to start out with something like a Gearhart muscleback, then, after winning 15 majors in a row, throwing all his Gearhart swag in a trash can and revealing that the entire time, they were actually PXG in disguise.

The he'd slam some Benweisers and kick Brandel Chamblee in the gut.

Hell Yeah.

Is it a given that he would play Hogan? I know it has his name on it, but how close do the current iteration of the clubs match what he played or had in mind when the company initially launched? I have no idea what the answer is, but many founders of companies hate the product later on. I don't know if Roger Cleveland hates what the company is now, but I would guess he prefers Callaway since he works there, right?

In the biography Hogan: An American Life (excellent book BTW) he actually did come to regret the company, or selling it at least. It was first sold to the AMF company. They kept Ben, the board, and all the employees. Basically the only thing that changed was the ownership. Then sometime in the 80s it was sold to some Japanese company called Cosmo I think. Wait a tick, let me Google that to make sure...yep Cosmo World Enterprises. They wound up shuttering the Fort Worth factory and firing everyone. I think they wound up filing bankruptcy and selling the Hogan trademark. Hogan regretted ever even selling the company to AMF even though it was under their ownership that the Hogan brand clubs gained their lofty reputation.

Mr Hogan played Spalding woods at one time in his career

Spaulding, Wilson and MacGregor owned the market back in the day and made premier equipment.

Wilson still uses the fact that no company has won more majors than Wilson- (I am not sure if that is true anymore). It's kind of sham advertising because the last player to win a major using primarily Wilson clubs was Harrington. But back in the day they had 80% of the market for irons. The only company that could possibly match that number (and I could be wrong) is Tom Stewart of Scotland. Tom Stewart's clubs were the premier irons of the 1900-1930s and were in almost every players bag.

He hit some cavity back irons for a Hogan commercial when he was in his 70's. That, I'm quite sure, is the only time he used a forgiving iron.

are we talking hogan if he was born in 1990 ? or Hogan as if we used uncle ricos time machine and brought him to the present? because it matters...... if we use time travel i dont think he uses anything we have now nor do i think he competes.... he would be stuck in a perpetual state of shock ......i doubt 'change" was his cup of tea...

if we somehow have him born around 1990 who knows... he could be all Ping for all we could guess.... maybe plays the vertical groove driver .... lol probably more likey hes a titleist staffer for the irons and no flash woods... afterall he couldnt play Hogan because if hes born later the company doesnt exist... Possibly plays Callaway as the MB1 is closer to his blade on blade forgiving design as his blades were NOT the "pure blade" everyone thinks they were.... which is the pure genius ... everyone thinks hes god for hitting a small iron when in fact he designed a more forgiving one..lol

Hogan would hit whatever worked best for him. Might be traditional style blades, might be more modern blades, might be better player cavity backs like AP2.

When folks say Hogan is overrated it's a bit silly but he is somewhat. Rather than in the top two or three he is more likely in the 5-8 category. But most importantly if he played today his course management would need to change imo. The days of conservative golf and playing for the middle of the green and pars will not win often in the modern game. And he was not a good enough putter by most accounts. Not as terrible as some say but not stellar either.

Who is the closest [golfer] we have to Hogan today? What do they play?

I'm guessing that Hogan would be close in stature to Rickie Fowler. I am also guessing that Hogan would have a little more swing speed than Fowler. Hogan won some long drive contests on tour - probably when Snead or George Bayer weren't around. Or earlier, when he timed his hook just right.

Hogan got fed up with MacGregor. Particularly after MacGregor designed a driving machine, and named it Iron Byron.

It’s no coincidence that the Iron Byron honored its namesake. When golf manufacturer True Temper first commissioned engineer George Manning to commence working on the project in 1963, he examined high-speed photography of top professional and amateur golfers in his testing facility, measuring their swings against one another.

What Manning concluded by the time it was fully developed three years later was that only one swing perpetrated the same exact numbers every single time.

The owner of that swing was none other than Nelson.

Chad Campbell has a similar swing... but not stature!

The "easier to hit" blades that he designed were in the late 60's and 70's. The talk of him puring really hard to hit blades, were the earlier models that had really long hosels and COG (sweetspots) in the heel. The ones you had to darn to shank, in order to hit pure

I'm sure it would be higher class than working at Perkins.

What's wrong with working at Perkins? It's a job. Good for them for being employed.

Nobody... seriously.

The fact that he came back after nearly being killed in a car accident, told he'd probably never walk correctly again or golf at all, but forced himself to through sheer will and excruciating pain to win three majors in 1953... amazing.

Pffft... none of these Nancy Boys today can hold his hat.

Mr Hogan played Spalding woods at one time in his career

Really? Where does this information come from?

when I was at the John Byron( putters) golf shop in HB Calif quite a few years ago they had a vintage set of Spalding Ben Hogan signature persimmon woods, that had been refinished, It looked a lot like the MacGregor woods of the 50's

back in the day, Spalding was a rival to Wilson, as they made everything from baseball mitts, to basketballs and other sporting equipment

Hogan refused to play the MacGregor Tourney ball which he thought was SH!T, also by early 50's had in mind to start his own golf co. he and Toney Penna had a falling out. Some of this was detailed by xgolfx, Charley Penna, Toney's nephew in the classic section. Great reads there.

Spalding HOGAN ?? It looked like Macgregor of the 50's, don't think HOGAN ever played for anyone but MacGregor then his own company. I gotta see those woods.
