Vokey SM5 removing black finish down to raw ( a how to pic heavy)

Finally did my sm5's. Decided to go with white household vinegar. Took a hour and a light scrubbing with a 3M green pad. Came out great. Actually slightly darker than the photo appears. Why pay Wedgeworks 200 bucks when you can DIY. Got this black SM5 for cheap. 60 bucks brand new.

Thanks, kind of dumb luck. I cleaned them with acetone, popped them in a convection oven at 525 for 45 mins, and that was the result. Honestly was shocked it brought out all the purples and other colors.

I think similar to an oil can finish. Definitely not going to wear great, but that's ok. Maybe rinse and repeat every season to bring them back to life.

They look great! If you didn't "cook" them they would ultimately just rust anyway right? I would be fine with that. :)

These were done at 500 degrees, 40 min

I tried this on my pm grind and slate md2 because I love the raw finish and also to make them look more like one another. I did clr and v/0000 steel wool on the 54 and the pm grind. It worked well.

 

Edit: Eureka!!! After paint stripping and sanding the PM matches the MD2 almost perfectly.

He used paint remover to strip it down to just metal. If not the paint would have bled in the oven.

They are actually stickers below painfully, came out easily with paint stripper.

Does anyone know if the Jet Black SM7s have black paint fill or is it just the coating? If it has paint fill, what happens to those areas when you use the CLR/vinegar? i have to imagine the coating behind the paint fill does not come off? Anyone have any insight?

Yes, the paint fill is black and the process with vinegar does not remove the paint. I'm sure it's the same with CLR. After removing the finish with vinegar I used a Testors white paint pen and filled in the loft to easier identify in the bag. Just applied right over top of the black numbers. Very happy with them!

My wedge above is the SM7 black. I wanted to leave some black finish on so I wet a cloth with CLR, wrapped the head lightly, and let it sit for 30 mins..

 

CLR is super strong, the black came right off. I used a wire brush to remove the spots of black I didn’t want.
