The surprising Callaway Fusion driver

Recommended Posts

Had it out on the course today, and have to say, this thing is amazing. This is not the usual honeymoon phase. I have never hit a driver this well, and I've tried quite a few. Only hit 2 bad shots and both were in much better places on the course than I had any reason to expect. I was playing with someone playing a new Epic and smoking him with the driver. Can't recommend this one enough.

Tried out my backup driver and it didn't work out. My regular is 45" long and the 12 gram weight, the backup is 45 1/2" long and a 5 gram weight. That 12 gram weight and 1/2" off really helps a lot. I need to find a heavier weight for the backup, and want to cut it as well to 44 3/4" to see what happens. Who sells the weights and what #?

Why don't you take out the heavier weight and put it in the back up one to try it out. Then if it works, get another weight! If it doesn't work out you might have to go with the shorter shaft in that one too!

It would make sense to stiffen it a touch. The extra weight also puts more pop on the ball, or increases the smash factor. I just ordered the 16 gram from Billy Bobs, and cut it to 44 3/4" to see how that works out. they have a 26 gram tungsten weight for cutting it in the 43 range, imagine the pop on that club!!

I received my "new" Fusion driver today from Carl's Golfland and it is definitely not new. This thing has been well used with pop up marks on the crown and toe with scuffs all along the bottom of the club. I emailed them to ask for a replacement or refund, I double checked and it shows new on the order. Little frustrating as I was going to take it to the range tomorrow and the course this weekend. Oh well, I will wait a bit longer and miss a few more fairways ;)

I had a bad experience with Carl's a few years ago involving a 'new' driver. Without going into detail I will never do business with them again.

I’m the thread starter and have to confess to straying.

I abandoned my Fusion for a G400 Max, then a PXG XF.

My driving has got worse.

So I spied a Fusion with my preferred shaft (Matrix Xcon6) on CPO for $100.

Had to hit buy.

I think that I have finally found my "sweet spot" with the BB Fusion driver. I've been using this winter to head out to my empty course when I can, and really test out some different heads, shafts, and settings. I am a lefty, and play on a course which can be very punitive for lefties with a fade off the tee (which is my tendency). So it is critical for me to try to stay on the right side of the course off the tee.

13.5* head seems to work better for me than the 10.5* head, especially when paired with a 60g(ish) shaft, like the Diamana S+ 60. The heavier 12g weight seemed to give the head more consistency and pop. I was out recently with the Fusion 13.5* and Rogue Draw 13.5* heads, assuming that the Rogue Draw head would be, well, more draw biased. Interestingly, with the same shaft and setting, the Fusion was consistently more draw biased than the Rogue Draw. And for comparison's sake, I never really found the 10.5* Fusion head to be draw biased. And once I can begin with that draw bias, I am able to dial things in with the optifit settings, with N/S, -1/D, etc. As an aside, the feel on the Fusion is far nice than the Rogue Draw IMO.

I ended up with the Diamana S+ 60 stiff and Aldila Synergy 60 stiff working the best, with some of the lighter shafts being too draw biased, and some of the heavier shafts working the other direction. Time will tell, but I am feeling pretty good about this.

Got my weight in and that was fast shipping. It is suppose to weigh 16 grams, but came in at 15.5 grams. I'm okay with that. I cut it to 44 1/2 inches, and this weight should provide some pop. So now it is the 44 1/2" Fusion against the 45". I have a feeling the 44 1/2 will win this battle.

The driver arrived today and I took it to the range and to a launch monitor.

Suffice it to say it has knocked the G400 Max and the PXG XF out for tomorrow's round.

You know, I was out on the course this past weekend with my G400 Max and BB Fusion, head-to-head, mano-a-mano. Sure, it's winter golf, and not a replication of a real golf round. But I can see what is working, and what isn't.

I have settled on the Fusion 13.5* head (-1/D), 12g weight, with a few shafts in the mix playing at 44.5" (S+ 60 stiff, Recoil ES 450 stiff, Synergy 60 stiff, etc.). G400 Max is dialed in with the Tour 65 regular flex shaft playing at 44.5".

Bottom line, both fantastic drivers. I gotta say though, the G400 Max won the day--for now. That said, I feel good with both of these drivers going into next season.

I did the same thing and re-purchased the Fusion. I sold it for the Rogue but the Rogue wasn't anywhere close to being as straight and I had nearly identical ballspeed numbers w/ the Fusion as I did w/ the Rogue and actually had lower spin w/ Fusion.

I gotta laugh when people compare the Fusion with the G400, when you think about what they both cost. I bought a spare Fusion for less than $100, really less. I hope the weather gives me a break soon so I can hit this driver and see how it performs, the 44 1/2" one with the 16 gram weight.

I feel like a religious zealot when I talk about this driver, but I really can't say enough good things about it. Played it on my home course yesterday for the first time, and it performed like a champ. The big thing about it is not only the fairways you hit (yesterday I hit 9 out of 13-69%), but the fact that your misses are so playable. Our finishing hole is a carry over water, and I ofter miss it to the right-way right on this hole-into the next fairway. Don't know why because my usual miss is a hook. Anyway, hit off the tee and it headed right. I thought "Oh s***", but when we went to find it, it had curved back into the first cut of rough. Hit another off the heel on a different hole and ended up in the fairway.

I am also driving it past my playing partners with the shorter shaft.

TRY THIS CLUB!

Add me to the list of folks who've come back to the Fusion.

Avg driver SS of 103 these days. Very inconsistent ball striker with driver. Face contact zero axis or below, from the center out to the toe. Never heel side, and rarely ever high on the face. I picked up a heavy 9* with Elements Gold 6F4 on the bay for $80 and figured at worst I'd keep it for a backup.

For me this is the safest driver I've ever hit. If I had a choice of any club on earth and had to hit a drive that landed in the fairway at 240yds or more, there is no contest this is the club. That should be the end it. I should chain this club to my bag permanently based on that statement. But you all know how it goes...I've hit some great shots 260 plus yards carry with the fusion, but most are 230-245 carry. And well that just doesn't excite me as much as it should. With the G400 LST, most were 240-255 carry and a good handful 260s and a few in the 270s.

Thing is, there's 2 tee shots per round between the two clubs where the fusion is in the rough and the g400 is in the woods. And at least 1 per round where the fusion is in the center of the fairway and the G400 is in the rough, or in a fairway bunker. Point blank, I shoot better scores with the Fusion. When I become a better ball striker I'll upgrade to something that give me more upside and has a more exciting feel at impact. But like the FT-IZ (which I still have) this stick is going to stick.

The weather and the flu have put me on hold for awhile. The flu has passed(really bad,) and the golf courses were hit hard by a ton of rain, two are under water! At least one course is good to go, I think. Plan on hitting the driving range tomorrow and see how well the 44 1/2" driver does, or wait till Wed and play nine!

So how did the 44-1/2" work for you? Personally anything more than that length feels like a javelin to me. When I started playing I bought a used set of clubs which had that shorter length driver (FT-IZ) and I never knew it wasn't normal until I bought new clubs.

  • 1 month later...

Well, golf season is back in swing, and I have started the season committed to the BB Fusion. I posted above that things were looking good during on-course winter testing, but I knew that I needed to see what happens during the real golf season, with real rounds, playing partners, etc. So far, so good.

I had to break my stubborn streak with the G400 Max and and G400 SFT, which are excellent drivers, but were not giving me the consistency I want.. 13.5* BB Fusion with the 12g weight and loft dialed down -1/D plays like a 10.5* driver from other manufacturers, but with more forgiveness. Despite testing a lot of Callaway shafts I have around, Rogue Max, S+60, etc., the stock UST Recoil 450 playing at 44.5" is working great.

Anyway, this driver has been terrific for me thus far this season. Hitting more fairways than ever, and avoiding disastrous drives (for the most part). Hoping this continues.
