The Hunt for Traditional Golf Shoes

Recommended Posts

I've never played with metal spikes and I'm not a fan of heavy shoes, so the modern offerings are good for me. That being said I have been poking around for newer shoes wih a traditional look. I found these Etonics for sale used and am pleased with them after walking around the yard for an hour. For $20 I could hardly lose. The lady I bought them from said her husband only wore them once.

I tend to buy a fair amount of equipment from the wives of deceased golfers. My wife saw these and asked, "More dead-guy golf deals?". A little insensitive perhaps but if the shoe fits... Soon enough I'll be the dead guy and someone else will get a good deal. Ha!

Great shoes! Congrats on the find!

Man, I'd put some metal spikes in those babies and go hit the local course. Just imagine the sound on the blacktop and concrete when you're strutting to the pro shop...Sweet Jesus!

I have no luck in finding good classic shoes. I just picked up a nice pair of classic Mizuno's. Light carbon fibre sole, but what I didn't realise is that the cermec spikes are permanent and can not be removed. So the search continues....

J

Which ones are you talking about. Pictures?

These be the ones...

Yamaha W-602
'58 MT PT1 2W
'55 Tommy Armour 945's
Tad Moore "47 Rookie", a TM6? or maybe an 8802 today....

Ah! Some say these were part of the demise of metal spikes.

Resurrecting a thread from the past .... I just picked up a pair like these (not this pair). Now to get them broken in and into the rotation! I owned a couple of pairs of the Footjoy style 51409s (back in the latter half of the 80s and in the 90s). This makes three pairs of FJ Classics in my rotation along with a pair of MyJoy Icons and a pair of DryJoy tours.

Driver:  TaylorMade 300 Mini 11.5° (10.2°), Fujikura Ventus Blue 5S Velocore

3W:  TaylorMade M4 15°, Graphite Design Tour AD DI 7S

Hybrid:  TaylorMade Sim2 2 Iron Hybrid 17°, Mitsubishi Tensai AV Raw Blue 80 stiff

Irons:  Mizuno Pro 223 4-PW, Nippon Modus3 Tour 120 stiff

GW / SW: Mizuno T-22, 52° (bent to 50°)/ 56° (bent to 54°), True Temper S400

LW:  Scratch Golf 1018 forged 58° DS, Nippon Modus3 Tour 120 stiff

Putter:  Byron Morgan Epic Day custom, Salty MidPlus cork grip

Grips:  BestGrips Augusta Microperf leather slip on

I buy footjoys, pretty much exclusively, however i often get them on ebay, I own 4 pairs currently and rotate them. They are all "classic" style. I tried running shoes, but they do not allow me to plant my rear foot for my pivot. As I normally wear dress shoes for work, or leather boots, the weigjt doea not bother me.

So true! I went to The International in the inaugural year (1986) and again in 1998 and 1992 and I remember A LOT of the tour pros wearing this very same model. My first pair was back in 1987. I got another pair around 1992/1993.

I have a couple pairs of Icons I really like. Tried the high end Adidas after finding a good sale... not the same quality as FJ. No matter how well I treat them with Snowseal they absorb water. Steer clear.

I'd like to try the Ecco and AE if they still make them. Don't know why but I love the old school golf shoe!

Just installed metal spikes into the Justin shoes. Next: to record nostalgic sound on concrete, develop database of all golf courses in the USA that allow traditional metal spikes. Might be a small database.

8bit, I can't wait to hear the spikes on the cart paths and ballwasher spike cleaners!

For those too young to know and for those old enough to remember:

A couple years ago, I found a total unicorn while putting together a 70's retro golf outfit for a tournament. Brand new in the box, Etonic Stabilizer Wing Tips with kilties and soft spikes!!! I realize it's more of an old school look than what most people want to be seen in nowadays, but they are great shoes. I've worn them about a half dozen times since then and I think I will have them for a long time! The only picture I have of them is with me in the full getup. I was going for a vintage Miller Barber look. I've posted this picture before, so feel free to laugh. :)

These are leather upper, leather lined, leather soled and water resistant. These are not waterproof. That's why I have other pairs of shoes. :)

AJS4IGC5U8KS.jpegGot these tailor made from a Leather shop at Hua Hin in Thailand last year for US$150 while on a golf trip wth the missus. Was a little sceptical when being measured up but these shoes are a perfect fit and very comfortable. I only wear them when riding as the paths at my course would destroy the soles in no time. Inserts are removed as I use orthotics in my shoes. I have since replaced these spikes with softspikes which make them even easier on the feet.

I found those at a thrift shop.  Bought 'em, put some new insoles in 'em, and threw some Champ Zarma softspikes on 'em (they were one of only a few I could find with small metal threads anymore), and I gotta say, they're pretty great - I struggled a bit with getting the kilties laced up, and struggle to keep 'em tight, but I think I've got everything figured out to keep my feet nice and secure.
