Mizuno Iron Recommendation

Recommended Posts

I am thinking of getting a set of Mizuno irons and trying to do some research but not really sure where to start.

I currently play the Ping G25's and love them, so I am looking for something similar to that in Mizuno's lineup. I have kind of been looking at the JPX900, but not sure if that is a super forgiving iron like the G25. Just wondering what peoples recommendations are and opinions.

Hot metal would be similar. They are on sale too right now. Give discount dans a ring for a great deal. Mizuno has great custom options as well

I don't think the JPX900 are all that "forgiving". When you pure one, they definitely go a long way, but for me, I struggled with my JPX900Fs and didn't really like the turf interaction. They definitely aren't going to help a bad strike any more than your G25s.

YMMV depending on your swing.

Love Mizuno irons and just bought a set of MMCs that I love. But for me the 900Fs didn't work out too well, and I even changed shafts thru two different fitters...so it wasn't the shaft, it was more about inconsistent distances and the turf interaction.

JPX919 Hot Metal Pro wouldn't be a bad choice either.

Depending on how old you want to go, and to be consistent with g25, the only choice is jpx non forged line. The forged line is not nearly as forgiving. 919 hot metal (non pro) is your best bet. It's newer, super forgiving, packed with tech and goes a long way. Feels better than g25 as well. Good luck.

Ping has more bounce vs. Mizuno. Not sure what your swing is like, just beware there won't be as much help with fat shots. Hot Metals would be close to the G25s. Unless you feel the need for something new or need to be re-fit, stick with what you have. G25s are a great versatile club!

If you're going for forgiveness, it's tough to beat even a semi recent Ping G model. Forgiveness is relative based on how you strike the ball. I play the 850 Forged which suits me, but I'm not sure they're even as forgiving as my brother's G10s which are a bit older. Nothing wrong with wanting something shiny and new, but I'd recommend you test them side by side if/when possible. If you like the 919 Hot Metal, I'd think you can safely purchase the 900 hot metal without much adjustment. Good luck.

The 919 Forged is way more forgiving than the 900F IMO. There is a wide sole and much less bounce though so if you don’t have a great downward strike/your divot is well in front of the ball you may find a jarring transition moving away from Pings.

The JPX 900F are irons for the ages imo, they blend enough forgiveness with all the play ability and consistency you would need as well as a nice distance package. They have been truly excellent irons and Ive really enjoyed them, and played well with them. Nothing will mask bad swings no matter how forgiving a club is and Pings G line is about as forgiving as one can be but if you're looking for the next step 900F would be a really good choice. The HMs you mentioned would for sure be more in line of a lateral move from the G25s than the forged, if you wanted to keep as close to your current irons as possible.

900 forged are a perfect balance between a players look and sole grind and tons of length and forgiveness. They are not big soled trampolines like a Ping G series iron though. I think the 900 forged are a great next step up for an improving player who wants to get out of SGI or GI irons. You can work shots with 900 forged but if you miss the center you wont lose much distance.

The JPX-900F Gap wedge is my favourite club in the bag. I keep 2 bags of MP-18 MMC and each has 900F GW, plus I also have a 3rd as a spare. It's ground leading edge has transformed my greenside game yielding many chip & 1 putts, without the club stabbing into the ground.

This is a boring answer; I know Mizuno has a long history and many "cult classic" irons. I never considered Mizuno irons until a couple of years ago and I really don't even remember why (isn't that just the GolfWRX way? ) but became interested in MP18 MMC. Soon after I discovered an eBay auction for a set 4-P with Steelfiber i95 shafts (4-6 were Fli-Hi models). Ended up getting them for a really good price. Immediately the Fli-His were "wow," though I sold the 4 thus putting the total investment at right around $200. The irons were in great shape and I thoroughly enjoyed them. The only nit being the 9 and P were a tad large to my eye, but I was coming from King Cobra Forged black that I loved.

Fast forward to the MP20 release. For the first time in my life I was fit for a set and that made so much difference. Tried 8-10 shafts, nothing really jumped out until we reached the KBC C-taper lite 105R. Then, first shot, the angels began singing and bright lights ascended all around. Well, it felt like that anyway. I ordered a combo set 5-P with 5 and 6 HMB, 7-9 MMC and P MB. Earlier this month I updated by adding the 9 MB, Mizuno even matched the serial # of the original set. This is my perfect set of irons. The look and feel can't be beat. When I put a good swing on, the results likewise are fantastic. I'm a bogey golfer so sometimes I will make a bad swing. MP20s of course aren't game improvement but in my experience haven't been too punishing (I subscribe to the Indian not the arrow when I hit an especially bad shot).

The MP20 line won’t touch the forgiveness of the newer ping G irons tho.

JPX Hot Metal will be what you are looking for if you want to maintain the help the ping G offers.

The ping G25 are shovels and nothing in Mizunos line can come close to forgiveness . I am not knocking the g25 , if you hit them well , them you might want to keep them . Mizuno irons are for better players that can hit the center of the club face more often than not and there beauty is in distance control they deliver , which is everything to a better player . The middle of the club face feel is second to none with a forged Mizuno iron IMO and the turf interaction with the generally narrow sole is key to compressing the ball and backspin for the better player . Mizuno does make a more forgiving iron compared to a pure mizuno blade but it is minimal at best and if anything there recent irons are getting smaller in size across the board . Some of the recommendations above are very good like the 900 forged , the hot metals , but they will not be as forgiving as a GI Iron like the pings ...
