Each company has its relative merits and products to fit differing tastes, therefore asking what is "best" will garner a highly lot of highly subjective opinions. All that being said, in my opinion, the finest gentlemen I have dealt with is Tad Moore.

I am using a Lajosi Handmade blade at the moment. I've been meaning to get a new putter for nearly 2 years now, since I got my Lajosi (just the ho in me), but every time I start down the road of enquiries, I start to feeling as though I'm cheating on my Lajosi!! Kari was excellent and totally painless to work with and it's one of those putters that would keep finding it's way back into the bag, like 'old faithful'.

However, on the occasions that I have contacted other makers, Byron Morgan has always been a favourite in terms of style finishes and workmanship. For customer service, Chris at Machine is absolutely second to none. He bends over backwards to help, is kind, courteous, simply the best for his manner and help. Lumpy at Xenon is excellent too, especially if you have some wacky ideas, because he is brilliant at accommodating people who have definitive 'left field' ideas, and is brilliant at seeing into the mind of the buyer to fulfil their dream putter.

Is it possible to buy a new Scotty Cameron through his online shop, and have it customized to my liking before it gets shipped out to me? Or do I need to swing by Golfsmith and buy the putter I want then send it in to his custom shop to get customized.

Byron Morgan.
He will make a truely custom by hand if you ask. Most of us see his standard heads with some custom options, but don't forget the one-off custom handmades he does too. That's truely his greatest skill as he knows what subtle angles work, why they are there, how they affect the performance.

If you have something specific in mind, then Kari Lajosi will build it. Some of the other people mentioned have some limitations. For example, I wanted a copper DH89 from Byron Morgan, but that model, in left handed, is not an option in all copper. Kari will make whatever you want. I sent him my design ideas, and then we went through the process together. If you are not in a rush, it was a lot of fun.

I have an appointment with Dave at Machine putters on friday - 6/5 and am pretty excited, I live in the Dallas area and wanted to be able to visit a custom shop onsite. Will let you know how it goes.

I recently purchased a putter from Guerin Putter Designs an have been very pleased with the putter. Mr. Guerin sold Guerin Rife Putters and is now milling putters in a small shop in Carlsbad, Calif. I personally visited with Mr. Guerin to establish length, lie, and swing weight. He did a very nice job.

I've tried a lot of the boutique putter makers, and since I prefer the 009 style, I went with Kingston. I could not be happier. Kyle is simply amazing to work with.

While I respect and love a lot of the stuff Byron makes, Kari makes amazing stuff, and is usually significantly cheaper. Plus, the lizard is freaking awesome.

That list outside of Tyson Lamb being added covers all the ones I'd be willing to roll. If you live in the UK I have heard great things about Raybon Putters.

 

If fact in all honesty I won't roll anything that's not from Ken at Xenon or Lamont Mann. I have tried to contact Low Tide multiple times with no response.

OP- If you're in Chicago why not go Bettinardi? I think being local you'd probably have a big advantage of working with those guys.

If the OP is in Chicago, Kingston is also local to him. IMO, Byron, Lajosi, and Kingston make very quality putter that are simple yet attractive. You really can't go wrong with any of the options listed.

I am not entirely sure how Kingston works as for fitting, but the owner is a member on here and is very interactive.

Lots of good choices out there, but I really like some of the work Bettinardi is doing lately. The new line just came out and it looks great.

He has made 5 custom putters for me, and his attention to detail is second to none.

 

I've had other custom putters that didn't even sit square at address - something that never happens with a MannKrafted putter. Lamont spends more time on details that convert to playability and feel.

I have a Kingston, Piretti, and Mann (soon) as well as having Slighter modify a putter of mine. Honestly, all have been so great to work with and will work with you. There are obviously price differences between full customs and modified canned designs which all mine have been. The biggest difference is in capability. Piretti is more of an OTR putter with custom options so prices will reflect that level of manufacturing. Kingston has canned designs and will do custom work to them - different hosels, finishes, softening, etc. - but won't do a custom 1 off (that I know of). Mann and Slighter will do just about whatever you can think of.

TP Mils!! i've owned Byron DH89's, Piretti GSS, and a couple of Machine Putters and sold them all and kept my Mills. Well.. i sold some Mills too but just the carbon steel ones. Mills stainlesseses feels so good.

I’ve had sooooo many. Everyone does a little different something. My favs are Mannkrafted Byron Lajosi Piretti Kingston. Mann Byron and lajosi are fully custom. Good luck and have fun. Can’t go wrong.
