Joe Powell Golf maker of great persimmons to close this fall

Recommended Posts

I realize this is an old thread about Joe Powell Persimmon WOODS but, I feel the need to let everyone know that I just acquired a set (2-SW) of Joe Powell cavity back, forged irons similar to Hogan Edge's yesterday.

I will try and get some pictures posted soon. In the meantime, does anyone have any information on them?

They appear to be late 80's/early 90's issue. The cavity has the cursive "Joe Powell", the top line has the word "FORGED", the sole has the club number stamped at the toe and the heel has no print or script.

Randy, they could be the perfect match for your Joe Powell persimmon woods (assuming you still have them)!!!

STAY TUNED!!!

I had this exact CB iron for years. John built them for me at the factory. As you stated... They are quite similar to the Hogan Edge

Yes! Those are them! I can't find any info about them on IRONFINDER.COM; CLUBSOFDISTINCTION.COM or the Maltby GOLFWORKS bible.

Were these only sold from/custom built by the factory for customers? The shafts are True Temper Frequency Matched P.T.F. S-3 Joe Powell Golf (gold band with dual black stripes).

I NEED A MOD TO SEE THIS!!!

Error This file was too big to upload

You can upload up to 152.98K of files (Max. single file size: 152.98K)

WHY IS THIS DOING THIS???

Sent PM but it's most likely because of old images limiting current size. Go to your "My Settings" then "Manage Attachments" and remove/delete old photos/images which you're not using any more.

Those Joe Powell's bear a strong resemblance to my old Merit Fusions (bought new at in 1992). Wonder if they started off from the same Japanese blanks (the Merits were forged in Japan)? Also pretty darn similar to the Palmer Standard from about the same timeframe. The Merits were bored .355 and the Palmer .370. I found it really odd that the Palmer's pin only went through one side of the hosel.

Dave,

Interesting thought...what I see as a difference is that these Joe Powell irons have the "notch out" on the heel area of the top line (where the heel and hosel meet) similar to the Hogan Edge but have no pin whatsoever.

Didn't really notice the notch heel-side of the Powells until you pointed it out- Very Edge like!

Nice. That "Designed and Supplied exclusively by Kingsley Drummond Leeds" interests me. I never knew that anywhere in Leeds was designing/producing graphite shafts back then. Drummond Mills was a massive wool mill on Lumb Lane in Bradford that dates back to the Victorian period (burnt down in big fire a few years ago), so I wonder if there's any connexion to the Drummond family that owned the mill at one point.

Oh my goodness, those are good looking golf clubs.

The red and black velocitized insert and the last one you just posted are as nice as anything I've ever seen. I was looking at my rescue Powell yesterday and thinking how much I like the head and how much I'll enjoy bringing it back to life. Seeing those makes me swoon.

Yes, I'd love to have one, and no, I'm sure they are out of my 2021 budget and I'm not going to even ask you how much. I keep saying I'm done with anything other than thrift stores and then you do this. You are a bad man.

The Joe Powell pro models I have mostly have X100, D2 swing weight, 43.5 inches long.  I'm helping John Hayes sell these select drivers. They have been in Powell's storage for 6 years.  They are all beautiful and mostly mint. If anybody is interested I'd like to share pics.  I have alot of darker stained heads with black inserts, a few with green and white like Robots , one fairly deep compact head 6 screw.I also have a sweet light stained head green/white insert with graphite, this one looks amazing.   I'll post a pic soon, but email me at [email protected]

I'm posting video's on YouTube showing the clubs.

Thanks for posting Fred. Viewer discretion required for the other video on You Tube. That tantalising glimpse of the 6 screw deep face is almost too much....🤪

Gentlemen,

Perhaps someone could shed a little light on these three. I found them in the bag room at my club. I’m assuming they are Joe Powell’s based upon the logo on the bottom, but the crowns have no markings. Can any light be shed on these?

Those are definitely Joe Powell woods, unfortunately I can't offer up any info regarding manufacture dates for those models. One thing I can say, however, is you stumbled across a few really nice clubs. Great find!!

Hi All from a very sunny South Africa!

I have a set of these clubs as per pics for quite a few years now (about 20 years). Still been playing with them till I went for my assesment last week, when they said I should rather play with STIFF shafts.

They are Boron graphite shafts with hickory overlay.

Anyone know any of these questions:

 - Whether this was a special run?

 - How many sets they made?

 - Would you consider these to be collectors items?

 - What would they be worth? Would I be silly to sell them?

 - They are 3-SW

Thanks so much!

Boy how do I add images here .........
