Another little tease. And most shocking fact of the trip.

The speed 3 iron had 2 MPH more ballspeed than my 913H 19 degree hybrid...

Causing me to rethink the club that has been in my bag the longest...and most trusted under pressure
Speed 3 iron was almost as long as my 712u 2 iron.. into the wind, it didn't even move. I will attest to Scott's new Vapor results, once he got it figured out, he hit some amazing drives with it. Swanry was also hitting the Flex very well, it was great to see and was a lot of fun to see everyone enjoying their new results on a course like Shady Oaks.
It hurt a little bit to see Pure's misses fly my solid drives by 20...but that's a testament to the tech in the flex...and swingspeed of course!

Of course there was the drive on 9 I hit...415 par 4 that left my 73.4 in...

OK OK it was a little downhill and downwind!
Tai hit iron right behind? The Vapor 3 iron sounds very promising.
No, mine was just behind the greenside bunker :) Scott roasted that ball though.. I hit a few of my own that will be stored in the memory banks :)
U mean nearly hitting it in the greenside bunker on 1...a 360 flat par four...

It's a different game.

Speed 3 iron how does it compare to the Vapor PC 2 iron?
They didn't have any Vapor PC 2 irons in hand. I am planning on getting the Speed in the 2 and 3 iron, most likely. Will go further into in my review. The Speed was really long and easy to hit.. would be great to mix in for guys who need a little height and forgiveness in the long irons and could keep the PC's in the mid/short.

Any initial thoughts on the fairways guys?
I only hit the flex fairway a few times as I play my 4 wood at 42 (and driver at 44) and the fairway was standard length.

The look at address was perfect and the shape very comfortable.

The stock diamana felt great, and it was easy to see this is no "made for".

The Oven guys made it very clear that a classic look at address was a priority. And it shows throughout the line. Right down to the SGI speed 3 iron with limited offset

So cool to hear great things about the Speed 3 iron. Absolutely sick that it has minimal offset.

Pretty sure they're doing a Speed 2 iron. I was asking if they planned on a 712u type of product similar to what a lot of OEM's have been doing, but I especially like the 712's.. they basically said wait till you hit the Speed 3 iron and tell me your thoughts after, they were right.

Pure- what is the footprint and head size of the speed/flex relative to the covert fwy models? Are they pretty small and compact like the 2.0/ltd?
I believe the flex is the smaller of the two, and based on the model Rory used to hit the sick 3 wood to 8 feet at the PGA

The Speed has grown in size and the standard shaft is a half inch longer than the flex. While it is still compact, it seems that Nike looked to differentiate the two lines
Just poking a bit of fun, are you talking about the 3 wood that Rory skanked off the heel that happened to be the only ball that rolled 30 yards for the entire tourney?

Yes. which he admitted he missed.

And to me is a testament to the forgiveness of the product.

If you have ever played an SLDR fairway you would know what I'm talking about...

It does have the same graphics. Not very noticeable at address, if at all. I think you will find the Flex model pretty intriguing.. I haven't seen a driver that has been this low/low for me in a while.

I am very interested in the Flex as I'm a huge Vr Tour guy, and also the performance fairways. I am currently trying to decide between the Covert Performance tour issue and Covert 2 Performance. Tour issue better off the tee by far but much harder to elevate.
Go with the Flex. The Flex fairway wood was based off of Rory's "tour only" model, strong lofted VR LTD.. basically the same exact footprint + adjustability is what is now the Flex version. I'm 99% sure I quoted that right :)

Yes, that is what I am getting intrigued by.

Thanks i'm actually glad it has the graphics I think the crown design is tastefully done. And Im already intrigued by the Flex model especially after reading your brief rundown of the numbers you were getting. Look forward to more reviews and if I make it to the PGA show this year i will be banging on it at demo day.

Picking up 2 mph over my SLDR setup told me a LOT. There was a little bantering with the Nike guys the night before we hit, we'll just say that I didn't expect the SLDR to be beat :) The ball that registered 181.8 was probably about the 4th best ball I hit with the Flex. I know 2 of them had to have cracked 182, which is really high for me. The results translated to the course as did the ball flight I was seeing during the Trackman session.

There's a lot to cover, my writeup will probably be done on Sunday.

It did. We went from 9.5 from the mid setting to the 10.5 low setting, and kept going back and forth between 9.5 mid/low and 10.5 low and also the neutral and right setting. We were probably messing around with about 4 solid settings back and forth before we settled on 9.5 mid. The crazy part is that in the mid setting the club is easier to turn over and will bump the spin up about 200ish rpms. The 9.5 low setting was lower in spin and more fade biased, almost a different driver just by flipping the flex flight cartridge. On 9.5 low, my spin was sub 2000 rpms, which is probably the only driver I've been able to get down that low. Ball flight is just ridiculous.. and this time we got to verify everything on the golf course, which was really great to see. I want to get it out to my club asap to see where it puts me in comparison to my normal spots with the SLDR.

Also, the sound is incredible. Has a really unique hotmelted sound to it.. sort of FT Tour-ish but swap the composite sounds with a muted metallic sound.
Wow, great mini review. Can't wait to read the full review. And the vapor flex fairway is similar to the vr ltd pro 3 wood? Holy smokes... I might be needed to get a new 3 wood now. I thought I'd get away with just the vapor pro to test out. Now looks like I'll need to add in the flex fairway as well now too. Maybe I'll get to witness some of these drives the next time there's a tcc outing... :)

Can't wait to read the rest of all of the reviews... thanks for sharing with us.

What about face heights? Are they like the 915s where f (speed) is bigger footprint with shallower face and flex is like the fd being more compact and deeper?

They measure to the TOP (not the highest point or bulge - the transition - easy to show hard to communicate) of the grip not the mark at the top of the grip hence the 1/4" addition in length over last year even though they are the exact same length.

Boarding now :).
I hear what you're saying, but Titleist also measures from the ground to the edge of the top of the grip. (not the bulge but the very edge of the top of the grip, past the paint line) and gets 37.00" Nike gets 37.25" for the same 7 iron. I can't figure out how they are getting the extra 1/4". I know it seems insignificant to some, but as a taller player, I play +1/4" to +1/2". It saves me from ordering if they are over (which some are saying they are not.)

Again - why is Nikegolf.com just now increasing their listed specs by 1/4" if they are no different than last year? I pulled every iron spec for the last several years from their cached Nikegolf.com website and they are all a quarter inch SHORTER than the 2015 nike irons about to be released.

I use Titleist in every example because they are the longest off-the-rack iron mfg. Tied with several others but their standard is longer than PING or Mizuno.

1. The Nike website chose to change what they listed on the site under irons lengths specs this year by 1/4".
2. The new nikegolf.com listed swingweight changed from D2 to D3.5 (which coincides with a quarter inch increase in length)

i hope I don't come across argumentative - just trying to understand - thanks to those who have replied to my query.
Length didn't change - measuring to the "shoulder" vs "line" did.

SW increase was from more mass moving to the toe in the iron. For ease of communication - static head weight is virtually the same, but as weight is moved to the toe SW increases.
Thanks QuickFeet and Swanky -

Makes sense. And the swingweight matter makes sense too - I know that flattening an iron 4* droops the toe enough to increase the swingweight by 1 point. So adding mass to the toe increasing sw makes sense.

Now i need to decide if I want my irons at +1/2 or +1/4". Not sure I want to be rocking D5+ and I don't think nike has the lighter head option. They didn't with the VR Pro's back int he day.

Tai.....even with the shallower face , did the FLEX launch any lower than expected? Seems like an oxymoron. ....shallow face but low launch. ....realizing that cg low forward plays into the flight.....can you compare it to SLDR?

Tai,

Did the head remind you of the CT2.0 or something different all together? I love the look of the CT2.0 I know there are different CC's at work here, but if Flex looks like that CT460 I'm in.

What about face heights? Are they like the 915s where f (speed) is bigger footprint with shallower face and flex is like the fd being more compact and deeper?

You can sort of compare the faces here, hard to tell, unless you see it in person. We don't know the CC's yet.

Rory's driver he used at the Ryder Cup was pulled from a box full of stock product. There is no such this as "Tour Issue". No pixie dust. No special testing. What you buy at retail is what professionals are using on tour.
When did this tour issue policy start?
Yea and what about the covert performance fairways that were way different than stock and I believe Rory still games the 5wood in that model so maybe it's something Nike is trying to do going forward?
I believe Rory's 5 wood is the same technology as his current 3 wood - which is the current covert performance 2.0. The 5 wood just has the covert 1.0 paint scheme.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.
You are not wrong. I'm a little surprised there is this misconception still out there. A couple of months after the final proto of the fairway was done there was a second one going into proto for TW. Many other pros liked the performance better, and it ended up being released to retail as the 2.0. It was tour only for about 4 or so months.
