Golf Talk Thursday : What golf tech in the past 5'ish years do you think has impacted your game the most?

 

If it weren't for getting banged up I might have a different answer, but it's definitely the improvement in graphite iron shaft offerings for me. I guess steelfiber has been around a while, but it feels like it's just been more recently that you started having a lot of options that offer steel-like weight, and control.

Anyone know what's the breakfast situation at Whiskey? The website just says "offers a menu for every time of day". Well, you can "offer a menu" that says "granola bar or GTFO" but I'm looking for something better.

 

There's actually a nice breakfast place coming in on Fingerboard road if someone is coming in that way. Big croissant sandwiches with sausage and egg.

Their website is straight garbage - always has been. It still has a link to their Twitter feed that hasn't been updated in five years. Sorry, one tweet in 2013 - then it goes back to 2012.

 

I wouldn't take anything on their site as anything remotely related to gospel truth.

Self Deprecating Golf Talk Friday : What is the worst shot you can remember hitting in the past year or so?

I got out to Norbeck last night for some practice and then played the front 9. Putting out there is very frustrating right now. The greens are still sandy and bumpy. I hit 5 GIR with some good looks at birdie, but just could not get the ball to the hole. Also missed 2 6-footers for par. Shot 40 with 18 putts (9 2-putts). Tee and approach game were solid though. Looking forward to playing Whiskey Creek next week.

Self Deprecating Golf Talk Friday : What is the worst shot you can remember hitting in the past year or so?

The first shot that came to mind was a topped 3-iron from 200 yards out at PB Dye last weekend. Had a goal of shooting par and I was in birdie position (we had 2 birdies on that hole) and instead I made double. Felt like a 3-shot swing and I finished +4.

 

But the crud drive on 18 on Monday was a close second.

 

Sort of remember my tee shot on 1 at Tobacco Road. Was looking to have a nice round. Drove the ball nicely that morning, and smother-hooked one left into the hazard at TR. Sort of set the tone for the day.

Any tips for Whiskey? I have not played there before. Is it pretty straightforward or does it have some quirks?

I've got a couple for GTF as well.

 

First couple holes at Caves Valley. My youngest was fevered up and puking starting the previous afternoon, so I basically didn't sleep. I'm in a fog. Topped a hybrid on the first tee. Nearly topped another one, but caught enough ball to at least thin it down the fairway. Topped 4 in a row to start our second hole, en route to a 10.

 

The bunker shot over the green on 18 at Hobbits, when I was sitting there in 2, at level par. That's probably the single shot that stings the most.

 

Early spring last season, I probably missed the hole completely from inside 5 feet more times than I can ever remember doing in my life.

#11 plays 10 yards longer than the yardage. Even if you laser, or pace, or have gps. Add 10.

Creighton Farms - hit two irons shots, off the tee, completely fat. One of them was so terrible that I'm actually thankful that the club made it to the ball and made enough contact to fat it. Cant remember the last time I did that twice in round, just truly awful, awful shots.

 

11 at Tobacco Road - Good drive, had 195 front, up hill. Perfect 5W yardage. Tried to hit it too hard, snap smother-top-hooked a line drive runner into the woods which had to have been 75 yards left of where I was. Worst shot I hit all trip but still managed to get it on in 3.

 

Before I made the decision to actually practice pitching with my PW/hybrid last year I hit so many bad shots around the green that its not worth talking about.

About a month or two ago I had the shanks and would hit my drives 70-80 yards out and shank the wedge dead right OB. So not a single one in particular, but a string of them that round (probably about 8).

Fabb. Even par. In the bunker on 18 at Hobbits in 2. Bone stock sand shot, get it over the lip and it can't go anywhere except within about 8 feet of the pin.

 

He freaked at the last moment about leaving the ball in the bunker and hit a shot redolent of damp wool, sending the ball way over the green.

 

Still with a chance at a nifty par, he lost his nerve again and sent his chip at least 20 feet past the pin.

 

He walked off with a bogey and a dour personality.

GTF-Revised: FAbb had a nice round going at Waverly, then pulls 4 iron on the 10th to play a safe shot to the fairway. The he topped or fatted 3-4 shots in a row. He walked off with a double or triple and a dour personality.

GTF: The one that immediately comes to mind might be my topped drive on # 4(I think?) at PB Dye the other weekend. Or maybe the duffed wedge out of the thick stuff after that. Or maybe the topped 3w that followed those two shots. It wasn't pretty.

 

GTFv2: My favorite still is probably CCMVP's wedge on #10 at UMD a few months ago. Perfect drive, steps up ready to knock a wedge close, and hits like 5 inches behind the ball. Immediate head hang and shuffles forward a few feet to where his ball wound up. Runner up is Stix's chunked drive on #10 at PB Dye. He wound up with bogey on the hole, so not too bad, but his confusion after the shot was pretty funny. But really it was just a layup probably
