Any Single-Digit Handicappers Play Game-Improvement Irons?

yep, i'm currently using Ping G30s, also have a set of srixon Z545s, but prefer the Pings, will be changing the g30s to a set of the new Gs as soon as.....just love the forgiveness of them, why make a hard game even harder by using clubs that require a perfect strike every time.....i'm not one of the usual wrxers that hit a driver 350yds and a wedge 150yds....just a normal golfer...240-250yds on a good day with my driver..Ping G30 sf tec 12 degree, and 110-115yd wedge...but am very straight...most of the time....get all the help you can and with todays tech you can a fair bit...if its there use it...

I am with you. Refreshing to read posts from non anal and honest members. I am with you and playing since 1975 have seen a lot and a lot of what I read on various forums baffles me. I would love to actually play with some of these 325 yard drivers and 150 yd wedge players to " see how it's done" LOL .

One of the best players in my state (finished 5th in state team standings) plays Ping G25 irons. Hits them great and can just flat out score. He is a personal friend of mine. Also plays a 3 & 4 hybrid.

About 20 years ago, I played a set of blades because that's what I thought good players were supposed to play. I took the Maltby club-making course and was introduced to the Maltby Playability Factor. My clubs happened to be at the very bottom of that scale. So, I thought I'd try a set that was at the top of the scale. The result was remarkable. I got control over the ball, my handicap dropped into the single digits, and I ultimately passed the PAT. I still have those clubs and often return to them when my swing goes awry. In fact, they're in my bag right now.

I am going to strongly voice my opinion on this and could care less what anyone else thinks period!!!! I will add everyone is entitled to their opinion. I flat out resent the fact that some of you think us blade players have an ego. I am 63 years old and only play 2 times a week and still maintain a 5 hdcp not only playing blades but antique blades at that. I also maintain a 6 playing blades and persimmon. For me I have hit blades all my life and are used to them. Yes I have tried CBs and such and they do not work for me. With that being said I will admit blades are not for everyone and never have you read from me that I am pushing blades for everyone either. Nope I do not think I have an ego I just play what works for me and everyone else should do the same. Remember this is I guess my mission statement---- There is no one etched in stone proper way to play this game and this includes equipment as well as the swing

Well I am going to get a little technical here. Everyone is different and have different swings. A lot of it has to do with turf interaction and AOA. Also as a couple of members have mentioned it has a lot to do with matching a head ( what ever the design) with a proper shaft for one's swing. And also another member posted about the weight. That is a big factor for those of us that play strictly off of feel. For me and this is strictly me most CBs have the weight down low and bigger soles with more bounce than blades. For me I tend to bounce the club and decel through impact where with a butter knife blade I get through the ball.

But in a nutshell what works for me may not work for anyone else. And yes I have been around this game all my life and I have seen all kinds of single digit handicaps swing all different ways and play all types of clubs. And I have never subscribed to the latest and greatest thing. We actually have a contingent of retirees over at a neighboring course ( which come to think of it is a part of my membership package now) that are in their 70s and still play Eye2s and drivers like a TM Quad. These guys shoot their age or better almost all the time. My old man was famous for saying " If you want forgiveness go see a priest because Old Man Macgregor will not forgive you" Yep a mishit or bad shot is bad off of any design club

I don't know who you are responding to here, but since this post directly follows mine, I assume you're responding to me. If so, I challenge you to find anything in my post that suggests that MB players have an ego. I merely stated my experience with GI clubs. Frankly, your response is of a type that induces me to rarely post on this forum anymore.

I've read a lot of Big Stu's posts and I wouldn't take it personally. He seems like a good dude. He's old school. They say a lot of egotistical jerks drive BMW but we know not all BMW drivers are egotistical jerks. It's the same with blades. I know lots of folks that drive BMW or play blades that are fine folk.

I play G400 irons. It's like cheating.

My question is how many blade players actually work the ball? If you are just playing one swing and not trying to flight or work the ball, why wouldn’t you play forgiving clubs?

im a five handicap and playing oversize burners from 1996. They are fine.
