We have a men's association, play every Sunday morning. PM me with questions.

Played Sunday greens were fast and firm, wouldn't call em concrete.

To me, for $10 more I'd take Berkshire over crystal springs, it's cheaper than wild turkey and ballyowen(though this is a course I love) by quite a bit and the other courses don't compare but yea they are cheaper.

Agreed. Played there yesterday without a warmup and pulled the first 2 breakfast balls straight left into the hills on 1. The rest of the course is great, just 4 dead straight holes to start can kill your round quickly. But if you do get through them, you feel confident as ever.> @LPSISCO said:

I play Ballyowen for $55 and Wild Turkey for $40 and Crystal Springs for 30$. I'm not an early morning on the weekend golfer, I play later in the afternoon when I get decent rates.

With that said, on one of my half days this summer on Friday's, I should check the course out. It's designed by the same person who did Wild Turkey and Ballyowen. Seems I can get decent rates on Friday afternoon, even as out of county.

I play over at Basking Ridge but a couple of buddies asked me to join them last week for a round on Sunday at 9:00 AM @Berkshire. 5.5 hours later and I will never go back. The first time we called the ranger out he informed me that it was one group, several holes in front of us and that is all it takes to slow a course down and there was nothing that can be done. That was a fun conversation that ensued. The par 5, #7 had my group waiting behind a group on the tee box, 2 groups in the fairway and a group on the green. I have never seen anything like it before.

The pace of play horror stories are a big reason why I've dragged my feet in playing there. And this isn't a new thing, I heard about the pace of play is an issue from day one. Now have I ever had a pace of play issue at other courses? Of course, I have, but they are far and few between (I admit, I'm not a typical WRX'r and walk 18 holes in under 2.5 hours and feel as though if you can't do that, you're a slow golfer).

However, if I played Berkshire on a Friday afternoon, the pace may not be an issue. I'd hope at least.

If you can survive the pace of play at Crystal Springs and all those courses you definitely can at Berkshire.

I've never had a 5.5 hour round up there. Maybe I've been lucky?

Yes sir. One of my best friends is a member there. He is in sales and his company pays, but I believe initiation was 5k and it's around 10-12 all in each year (we are 30). Guest fees are pretty pricey, but you cannot beat the member guests. $200 + tip for the fore caddy. Breakfast, lunch at the turn, dinner (sushi chefs, crab legs, the whole 9 yards), open bar the entire time with cart girls coming around, great welcoming gifts (got a really nice rain zip up one time, shoes one time, pro v1x box one time, etc.), and then really nice closet to the pin/long drive, raffle prizes, and an island green shootout to one of their lakes during cocktail hour before dinner after the round). Signed up for the next one on July 11th, can't wait. Playing there Saturday to practice in advance of the 11th and I'm expecting to pay about $200 for guest fees plus caddy tip or cart and fore caddy tip and that's with him buying the drinks so definitely not cheap for your random round. They do a 9 hole scramble called the Kris Kringle each december where you play in Santa suits for charity that's a really good time and has gotten some national recognition. We placed 2nd last year.

Three 9's all pretty unique and challenging depending on the tees you play and how well you play around the greens - they keep them really fast and a lot of bunker guarding.

If I had the money or had company paying it would be high up on my list to join. Solid group of guys too at various ages.

  • 2 weeks later...

walked 18 yesterday afternoon at bowling green in oak ridge/jefferson , it was crowded andwe had a 4some of walkers finished the round in 3:50 the ranger was out in full force. course was very nice for my first time. played from the blues, tee boxes were perfectly flat and not tore up, one tee box forward they were chewed up dirt showing and very uneven so i move back a box right away after the first hole realizing this. the par 3s from there were doable even though i only made 2 pars, and i blame that on my putting. i almost always can get the ball down in 2, putting is my strong suit i just could not read these greens one bit! (anyone else have this problem here??) don’t know if it was because they got so much play that day and the days prior(we teed off at 240) but not one put broke how i saw it either went straight with literally no movement or right near the hole would cut hard after going through what i thought was the break. i am eager to go back there and try my hand at those greens again. (they were on the faster side but felt manageable) it’s a tight course for the most part but forgiving as almost all shots in the “woods” can be punched out, i shot a 88with more 3 putts then i can count i found a majority of fairways on the back, found a lot of greens on the back. but just couldn’t score. anyone who hasn’t checked this place out and enjoys a great walking round definitely should consider it.

I played Crystal Springs yesterday at 2:00 and was done by 6:10, playing in a 3some, all of us playing from different tees (one of which was ladies). That's a pretty good pace, yet never felt rushed. Course, as usual, was in excellent condition. Although the 1 guy we played with was disappointed because he was told he couldn't walk the course. We just looked at him like he was nuts.

Crystal pace of play has improved big time over the past few years. Most people prefer BB, WT, etc. I usually fly through Crystal now.

I think it’s really about what you are looking for in a course. I played Crystal Friday afternoon as well. I thought it was the most enjoyable course I’ve played all year. It is supposed to be one of the most challenging courses in NJ and the US. Ballyowen is a great course but it punishes you in different ways.
