Plastic vs. Wooden Tees

Recommended Posts

It's just an example of what can happen when you hit the ball with the bottom of the club.

The ball has the potential to cause much more damage than a tee will.

Yes, that's my new driver.

Jesus man, I never notice anything other than some occasional paint transfer on my driver. I use the Covert 2.0. Not sure if it's because it's silver vs your black or what but that's nuts.

It's just me not hitting anywhere near the sweet spot. :)

I get through about two plastic tees a season (Pink 'castle' tees for Driver, normal short tees for everything else)...was given a packet of 12 wooden tees at a golf charity day and ran out on the thirteenth tee. I have never bought a tee and probably have 100+ pink driver tees that I have found around the course...for the pure economics I wouldn't use wooden tees and the paint usually leaves a stripe on the bottom of the club.

Plastic tees damaging a club face made of metal? Do people listen to the voices in their heads before they talk?

There were other materials used at that time.. Graphite for one... This was the transition period between persimmon and modern titanium clubs of today. In any case, I mentioned it had been a topic during those times.. I didnt make it up.. Were you alive back then?

So, you are saying that a ball that weighs 20 times more than that tee does no damage, but a plastic tee that bends at impact does. I've heard it all.

For the SECOND time... I am not claiming its true or possible or anything. I said I remember it during the 70's or 80's as a topic that it COULD damage a wood club face. It never stopped me from using plastic tees and as i said, maybe it was a rumor made up by wooden tee manufacturers.

I've been using Epoc tees for yrs. Only way to break them is in cold weather. They last forever. Love the 1.5'' for par 3s. They come in diff. colours. Have never damaged a club with them either. ;)

Plastic, 4 yards more, a 4 pack will last the season for the driver. Usually lose them as they rarely break.

I have used these for three years now, one length for my driver and another for my 3W. I've broken one total in several hundred rounds, and lost one or two others. I don't know or care if they actually give more distance, I just like that they're always the same height and I never run out partway through a round. I've never damaged the face of a club with them either despite thousands of drives during rounds and practice.

With a raw potato in one hand and straw in the other, I can put that straw clean through the potato. If an object hits another object hard enough, it can cause damage.

You can't really compare a raw potato and a piece of stainless steel or titanium though.

FWIW, I use white wooden tees.

My club uses plastic tees so I use plastic tees. Free tees are the best tees. In all seriousness though, it's great to only need 1 or 2 tees in your pocket for an entire round. With wood tees I would grab 5 or 6 and by #14 or #15 I would be grabbing for more tees out of my bag.

Besides the occasional white stripe being left on the bottom of the club or even on the face, I have had no issues whatsoever with plastic tees causing damage. Frankly, IMO, there is nothing but benefits from using the plastic tees. Many of them are made from recycled material. You aren't using near as much wood. You use way less tee than with wood which significantly cuts down on waste. Personally, I feel every club should move to plastic tees. Like the post above said, here in town Muirfield Village has switched to plastic tees.

I bought like a couple thousand wooden tees for $27 shipped on some sort of deal of the day at Amazon last year. They are my preferred "natural" color with clear varnish so they never mark a club.

At two or three broken/lost tees per round I figure I'm good until some time in the 2020's, if I live and play golf that long...

I don't like plastic tees. Here's my argument:

Those 'brush' tees claim that they give you extra distance because they minimize the interference with your club. I don't believe that. BUT, just in case that might be just a little bit true, then it follows that plastic unbreakable tees must really impede your club. But, I don't believe that either. Therefore, I don't side with either, and I use good ol American made heartland kickory wooden tees. Work just great.

+1!!!

I only use a hot pink martini tee for my driver. For other clubs I have a bag of assorted (mostly scavenged) tees of all materials and colors.

Potatoes and straws not withstanding, I find it hard to believe it was a plastic tee that drilled a hole in that club.
