Callaway Apex CF16 - BEST. IRONS. EVER......

Sucks because they are solid....but every time I come to 13 at my course....usually 155-165 over water....I nuke a 7 over the back....even trying to knock it down. At least I never worried about putting it in the water!!!!

Do the original Apex have more consistent distances??? Lofts are about the same as cf16.

I have the Apex 2014 as my primary gamers, and have had no problems with distance control (But then again, I don't recall ever having problems with distance control with any of numerous sets I've previously owned)

Very solid irons IMO

Just got my Apex CF 16 combo irons today. Bought these off reviews and recommendations, didn't test them out. Got the Japanese spec irons which I'm told the only difference is the shafts, I got the NS Pro Modus 3 tour 120 stiff. I bought these as my back up set to the Titleist C16 but I have a feeling these might be gamer set. Can't wait to play them this week.

managed to find a new 2014 6 iron in a shaft I wanted to try, so if this works on the range I'll get a whole used set. Shame about the sound and fliers on the cf16 as they look slightly better but in my fitting I was getting silly distances with the 7 iron

Never flier issues....they are just long....and back in the bag. After some searching I realized these give me the best chance to post low scores. I just need to dial in the distances better AND trust them.

Tru, I really struggle to understand what the big deal is with distances, so what if the CF irons are now 1 club longer than what people are gaming??

Adjust & hit 8 instead of 7, simple solution, thing is they feel awesome, look amazing & dispersion is tight as hell & I honestly do feel as they could be in the best irons ever category.

I don't play them though, not because I don't like or don't want them but because I am playing the best golf I have ever played ATM & have what essentially is the same technology in a cast iron XR-Pro which also has less offset too.

For that reason I feel it would be a $700-1000 sideways move & for that money to offer me possibly a slight feel advantage & no improvement in my score, I'll skip them.

Great irons though!!!!

That wasn't my issue. I agree about hitting 7 instead of 6 etc, I am looking at the 2014 Apex now (same lofts as 2016).

The issue I had was several shots would be 180 ish the next would be over 200!!!! this was on a GC2 monitor. so for that reason I couldn't 'trust' them.

Now you have me second guessing my decision!!! For me 8-AW are zero issue....no cup face. 4-7 are longer so a gap between 7-8. The hot shots I am not sure about. I found them consistent....just a club longer.

As I stated before they need a club between the 7 and 8 iron.

Fubuman you would not experience the difference in the xr pro since every iron in the set has cup face technology....so no big gap.

I just bought a set to try. It will be hard to beat the horses I have in my stable already but I will definitely give them a fair shot. As for the flyers, if I do get one on the long irons, I will be on here bragging on my distances. Lol

until people here its a cup face Apex.

Watch Rick Shiels review, even he got one or two going further than they should, real shame as I wanted a set, but..............

thanks for that bit of info. I was fooling around with an Apex 7 iron in the simulator bay a couple of weeks, I liked it. But I didn't try the rest of the set. I'm going to compare them to the Steelhead pros when they are available in March, for fun

For me, if I can get the same distance with a shorter iron than I play now, then I am getting it with a shorter shaft that is also easier to control. If all my distances with new clubs are appreciably longer than my existing clubs that would be great as long as there are fairly consistent distance gaps between them. But it's not vital to me. If all of sudden I am hitting my mid irons or wedges 15 yards longer across the set, then I can add a wedge for a shorter distance if I want. Or - and this seems to be forgotten by a lot of players - I can use the same clubs and put a 3/4 or 1/2 or 1/3 swing on any of them to adjust for the distance I need. People seem to forget not every swing needs to be a full out nuke swing. Also I can choke down to adjust the distance. Easy

Anybody have good experience with the Apex CF 16 Modus 120x combo. I loved that shaft in some srixon 545s I used to own. I should have just gotten that shaft in my CF 16s, but ended up trying something else. The AMT s400 are great, but I'm not sure I like them as much as the modus 120X. Thanks.

It was my understanding that 3-7 is cup face in the XR -Pro irons just as with the CF16, callaway rep. might've had his facts wrong then??

Anyway, for the XR-Pros I play, I don't have gap issues at all, my buddy that has CF16's has not hit a full 7 iron 180 today 200 the next either, none of us have experienced hot shots/spots etc. so can't really answer the inconsistencies question sorry!!!

I still think they are awesome irons though & again, if I did not have the XR-Pro, I would get the CF16.

For me the jumpers or whatever you might call them were caused by spin variation. I'm not a particularly high spin player and the CFs certainly do not promote spin. During my fitting, there were several strikes (a little towards the the toe maybe?) where the spin numbers dropped and I hit something of a knuckleball. Those registered 8-12 yards longer on Trackman and the ballflight (I was hitting from a covered range) was different. They proved to be a poor fit for me and I ended up keeping my Maltby DBMs which are pretty spinny in comparison but produce much more consistent distances for my swing. I wish I would have saved my Trackman printout as it was surprising to see how consistent the spin/launch numbers were with the DBMs and how much more the CFs varied - and I hit a lot of balls with the Callaways.

I'm going to hit more greens even with a flier a round, if any, with these clubs than me trying to play a club that is better than I am. They are going to hide my mishits better. Isnt that the reason for these? To make sure your mishits fly just as far and straight?

Now, if youre hitting a flier every other ball you strike then I dont think its the arrow but the Indian. I dont think it matters what clubs you use at that point. Just my 2 cents.

After being fit over a year ago in these with Nippon NS Pro 1050GH X-soft stepped(first ever Callaway product for me), and having a full season on them now, I got into looking at the rest of the Callaway offerings. Bit the bullet on an Epic SZ this year, and I'll probably eventually have a full bag of Callaway at some point. Love these irons!

Anyone got any thoughts on comparing these to the RAZR X from years back?

I started golf about three years ago and I bought a set of second hand RAZR X which I've been using ever since. I'm now looking for a change and tempted by the looks and reviews of the Apex CF16. I've booked a fitting for next week but in meantime just curious if anyone thinks these would be a good step forward in technology or has other thoughts. I'm a 15hc but would say that a lot of my shots are wasted on short game.

Still gaming the cf16s. I'm not consistent enough to notice flier hits or large iron gaps. These irons just work for me. When my swing is on .... the irons are PURE and long. I'm sure there are other GI irons that are easier to swing, but I'm going to stick with these irons for a couple of seasons or longer.

I love my SteelFiber shafts. Just enough dampening to reduce vibration, but not whippy at all.

I had a set of CF16 but was noticing the flyer issue as well. I'd hit a couple that felt exactly the same and one would go the distance I thought and the next would go 20m longer.

So I got into a net with GC2 and it was exactly what I was seeing on course. Front to back dispersion was horrible.

Picked up a Pro 16 demo with the same shaft and the wild front to back dispersion was gone.

CF16 set is gone, Pro 16s in the bag.

I have the Apex combo set, AW thru 8 iron are the pro and 7 thru 4 iron are the CF16. I have experienced the flier issue. It is really just inconsistent backspin that is causing the inconsistent distances. I have a GC2 at home and can see the results on the simulator. I am considering ordering additional pro irons. I do have a gap between the 8 and 7 iron that is more than I want.

In about ten rounds, I have noticed one 'flyer'. A 9 iron off the tee on a par 3 that went straight over the flag, over the green and out of bounds. Cost me two strokes but what a beautiful shot. Only now I worry that that was actually my only true good strike in ten rounds

Not sure if you were serious based on the end of your post, but if so, not thinking the "flyer issue" relates to anything beyond the 7, as the 8+ are not the hollow cup face design.

I agree. Switched from TM SLDR Irons a month ago to the Apex CF16s. The Apex Irons are easier to hit, longer for each iron and fairly accurate too.
