A Beautiful autumn day on the course.Fantastic weather for November 3rd.

Shot a nice 82 and missed three birdie tries. I hope you guys are out enjoying this last few days before winter arrives.

Our pro shop just got in a few demos from PING. Good looking iron. I took this one to the range and hit a dozen shots with it. Alta CB reg flex graphite. Now I'm not an orange dot as it that would be too flat for me but I hit them well. They produce fine straight shots. I think the shaft was a little stiff for me as I couldn't load them as well as the shafts in my irons. There was forgiveness there too. I think PING will do well with their new i230's.

So......I loved Touch's Honma TW-X irons when I hit them and I know I said I was done hoing

BUT Touch offered to sell me his back up set, new and still in the plastic wrap. After I asked

They arrived today. Going to the range with them tomorrow to get them dirty so wanted to

get a pic while they are still virginitively cherrily pristine.

I have a question for our resident swing gurus........................

 

I have been working on getting my hips more open at impact when on the range practicing. I

have found when I get there with my hips my swing bottom moves more forward and my ball

striking improves; not only in quality of contact but in directional control as well.

 

When I am starting out I will hit the ball great for a spell and then I will start to mess up, lose

my tush line and get a little twisted up and have to back off.

 

Later in my range session today I started setting up in different stances to see what the effect

would be. After experimenting for awhile I addressed the ball in my normal square stance and

then suddenly turned both my feet to where my toes in both were pointing about 30 degrees

left. I did not move my heels; just the direction my toes were pointing. I let my hips follow along

to where they were also about 30 degrees open to the target line.

 

I kept my shoulders square to my target line and swung along my shoulder line like I normally

would. I literally started crushing the ball and right dead at my target! I kept doing this for about

10 minutes and it kept working great. 

 

Now, it lasted longer than what I had been trying before but would it continue to last? I don't 

know. I ran out of balls and went home. I understand setting up like that would limit how much

my hips can turn on the backswing but I did check that and my hips were turning on the way

back, just not as deep.......but deep enough apparently.

 

The good thing was with that set up my hips seemed to default to being maybe 40 degrees

or more open at impact and I could easily maintain my tush line. Is doing this OK? Do I risk injury? 

I felt fine doing it and feel fine now as I write this but that is a very small sample.

Yes, Lortimer Persnickity made it to the course range today with the new Honmas. 

 

They are friggin' awesome. Buy some! At $549 for a very high quality forged 5-11 iron set with

a great high quality graphite shaft and great grips they are far far less than a comparable Ping

set, if there is one. I think there's still some out there with steel shafts too but I'm happy with the

graphite.

 

They are not GI irons IMO even though they are hollow body and have comparatively wide soles.

The heads are smallish overall and short from heel to toe. 

 

They feel heavenly when flushed. Feedback is good but not harsh. You know when you miss

and where you missed easily enough.

 

Are we soon to have the 3 Honma Amigos?  Maybe more?😀

Now as I have said before many times I am not a swing guru. With that in mind here goes.

Opening up the stance some like that will help you get through the ball. As far as going back the hips can only turn so far anyhow. The shoulder turn is the key. Ball position at address is also a key point. If you get too far up as in on that left foot you can go over the top and hit a nasty pull. From the pics you and Touch are a hell of a lot trimmer than I am and do not have the spare tire and hernia like I do. For me and this is just me I have to limit my reverse turn and loading my right side to avoid putting strain on my back. Going through I am ok. Basically with my shorter turn and swing I am able to mostly play pain free. I do not hit it anywhere anymore but I feel I am a better ball striker than I ever was. I had to come to terms with the distance issue to even be able to play period. 

I know I said I was never a swing guru but in the last year and a half I have studied the golf swing more than ever to try to get it where I can still play. Not only that but my course management as well. I also have to work really physically hard. I do some upper body workouts now not really pumping iron so to say but working out with like 5 lb weights etc. I also hit balls and play at least 9 holes everyday. I have to do this to maintain my flexability. I also have to warm up everyday for at least 15 minutes. When I hit balls it is mostly my old pre tournament routine just wedges and maybe the 8 and 9 irons. This maintains my flexability and timing. I have my good days and bad days like everyone else and I am still getting used to my entirely rebuilt swing. Like my Head pro says I grind at it. I grind at it more today than when I played comp. For me the grind is not for lower scores but for me to even be able to play. I absolutely had to learn to play without hurting myself. I chased the distance demon for a while and kept hurting myself. I had to learn I was no longer the player I once was and accept it. 

As far as the Homna blades if I find a set of solid blade Rose Protos I may be in that camp. But for me in my mind to really justify it that will have to be a great deal because I still have like 10 sets of Mac blades and some assorted other good sets.

If you want to encourage hip turn then you can try a narrower stance to c shoulder width minimal for full shots.

I'm like you Stu, I keep a very short backswing because that's the only way I can consistently make decent contact. If I let my swing get too long I suck to high heaven. I'm gonna try turning my toes forward like Conrad talked about. It might help me eliminate my fat iron shots by getting my hips turned through the ball better.

As did I.  We did not have the fantastic autumn weather though.  It was supposed to be that way, but we have been in a shroud of fog going on three days now.  Couldn't see more than 150 yards at tee off!  As a result there was a lot of groping around looking for balls that weren't in the fairway of which I had my fair share.

 

I managed a couple of pars, mostly on the strength of my putting.  It was a good day, especially for my partner Bob, who shot his low round of the year after being away in Arizona for 3 weeks.  My game doesn't preserve nearly that well after long layoffs.

 

Heard that the course is closing a week today, so maybe there's one more game in it for me, weather providing.
