Sat here pondering whether we need to start viewing Mcilroy's no shows in the majors for the last two years as a Tiger Woods style will he ever win one again. There is nothing in his game or his mental approach to poor shots that's makes me think that's likely. He picks and chooses his tournaments, his game is always "in a good place", he finishes the first round way behind the leaders, has a charge mid tournament that gets people buzzing, makes a bogey and then collapses. I'm a fan, but a concerned fan at the moment!

He's two years removed from a double major season and very young. I think ol Rory will be just fine.

Loved the coverage this morning! It was certainly a different vibe. Seeing the leaders out playing in the early morning sun light and the sense of expectation for the day ahead was awesome.

Lowry has certainly cut the number of guys that can go on and win the thing now though.

The live video stream on usopen.com says it was supposed to start at 8:30/8:45 for the featured groups. Anyone else not seeing it?

I would love to see DJ, Sergio, or Westwood take it if, for no other reason than perseverance! All good players that just haven't been able to catch a break at the Majors. However, being that this is our National Championship. and the fact that I am an un-abashed "Flag Waver", the first preference has to go to DJ! :sorry:

No way. A proper corn field is as close to flat as you can get. Not the case at Oakmont. You can't complain about it being built in a corn field and having too many blind shots at the same time. Also what's "weird" about it? I hate to imagine what you think of St. Andrews if you find Oakmont weird.

I do agree that it's shaping up to be a fun finish, and that it's been a great tournament so far.

Yep, looks like being a good, even great, US Open. I like the course a lot, the openness makes for great viewing. The only problem for me is that, with all the rain delays on top of the massive time difference (about 12 hours), I have had problems knowing which rounds they are on!

I wish the greens weren't so poor at chambers bay last year, as otherwise I felt that course was incredible to watch for the home viewer. Oakmont seems like an immaculate course, but save for the highway running through it I don't expect I will remember any of the specific holes once the tourney is over.

Perfectly understandable sentiment, but when it comes to golf, I root for the player and not the flag next to his name on the leaderboard.

Lowry has no history of closing out a tournament of this magnitude. I still think it will be someone else that will win. Maybe DJ or Westwood. My dark horse is Sergio.

Lowry might not have any history of closing, but he certainly doesn't have the demons the other three carry. I'd like Westwood or Garcia as much as anyone, but they both have that Montgomeriesque air. Good, but not good enough when it counted. DJ is the most impressive ball striker out there most weeks, but I'm never upset, nor am I shocked, when he inevitably crumbles.

Grace. He might be able to exercise a few demons this week. Knowing he was one swing away from a play-off last year ought to give him fuel. Day could possibly close the gap... But, if Lowry shoots par, you've got to think it's his..... But, that's a big but.

If you can't appreciate Oakmont's architecture then I'm not sure what to tell you. The complexity and risk/reward at this course is almost incomprehensible. They reward great shots and punish bad ones. 1 is one of the most famous holes in golf. The Church Pew on 3 & 4 are as famous a hazard as there is. The drivable 17th? The uphill 9th into the clubhouse? The green complex at the 18th has to be one of the most wild in all of major golf.

Sorry I don't follow your logic. Lowry has never won a major so he won't win but then you pick Dustin Johnson, Westwood and Sergio who all have not only never won, but blown multiple majors?
