Switched over briefly to the college World Series and didn't see, what did he get relief from?

 

TV camera tower. Line of sight. There really was nothing controversial about it. It's a very simple rule.

Yeah, basically because you knee jerk react to ban things if anyone wins a major with them.

 

Furyk's -1 is pretty interesting. I don't see it winning....but it's possible

At the end of the day this is the toughest course on the US open rotation, so you never know. Could be a bloodbath the next couple of hours.

 

But i agree that chances are at least someone keeps it below that

I thought it would be one club length when taking a free drop.

It was. Once the line of sight was established he had to drop within one club length of that.

I think people get annoyed by players actual stating its in my way, then hitting the ball straight over it anyway. I know he's allowed to but why not just be honest and say that.

One possible change to the rule would be to change the wording to "nearest point of relief in grass the same height of cut as the original position." If no point of relief is available meeting that criterion as well as not being closer to the hole, the true nearest point of relief would be used. I'd like that rule changed, but we can't blame DJ for it.

Landry will not get much credit for the entirety of his first major but he has earned some respect.

 

I wouldn't be surprised to see him win a smaller event this season.

He ended up hitting over the tower anyway. It was a legal drop that doesn't fit the spirit of the game. But DJ is long overdue to win a major. If he doesn't win this one, he probably won't ever get it done.

Yes you get to move away from the tower, but when you then hit your shot directly over the top of the tower, did you actually move away from it? How can you take relief to get away from an immovable obstruction but then still hit directly over the top of it as your intended line?

 

I also don't love the fact he went from a completely buried lie to a teed up lie.

 

Relief is all fine and well. But I really don't see how it's considered relief if you still just hit over the top of what you're supposedly taking relief from.
