Rory McIlroy: "I'll watch the Olympics, but probably not golf. I'll watch track and field, swimming,

Recommended Posts

Mcllroy's statement in regard to "watching only the sports that matter"

is demeaing and shows a lack of respect for the golfers that went and would have been

better kept to himself. It kinda shows the immaturity that keeps him from being the best since Tiger.

My opinion at least.

And you are entitled to your opinion. But I think you are missing the big picture.

Rory is not immature, he is actually very mature. But he is someone who is refreshingly frank and honest in interviews, unlike so many clones who give pre-packaged media-trained vacuous replies along with a passage from the Bible to every question. I hate those guys.

The Olympics has not caught the attention of the golf world as much as it could have. A lot of the pros and fans don't think it should be there, and many, including myself, barely watched it. Like Rory, I see The Olympics as being for athletics, swimming, cycling and so on and I don't think tennis or football (soccer) should be there either.

As for being the best since Tiger, I think it is his putting rather than his attitude to The Olympics which probably matters more.

Credible debate about golf being an Olympic event.

But Rory, Day, Spieth and DJ could have made it "matter" and garnered a great deal of attention. Even Rory alone showing up would have added a lot to the event.

That's why it's annoying that he said that. He made it matter less by no showing.

That said, there was a big hysteria about Zika and he and the others felt they was doing the safe thing. If he really feels Olympic golf does not matter, I guess he won't show up in Tokyo but I think he will. I have a feeling that golf at Tokyo will be a lot of fun. Really thinking about heading over there. Wonder if they serve up some eel and sake at the course concession stand.

The Golf Channel commentators are very quick to publicly ridicule and humiliate Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth (by specifically calling them out) for not participating in the Olympics. However, they seem to care less about bad-mouthing and scorning Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Adam Scott, Graeme McDowell, Braden Grace, Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel and the many others that elected not to participate.

The funny thing is, Rio being only 1 hour ahead in time zone really made it no different than any other Tour stop as far as travel is concerned, while Tokyo is going to be a nightmare for jet lag.

Indeed. How far down the list did they go to get Australian representation? For a country that prides itself as a great 'sporting nation' (and rightly so, in as much as that's a thing) Scott, Day, Leishman, Jones... maybe others IDK passed on it. They had to keep name dropping Baker-Finch ;)

I'm assuming they went after Rory because of that presser at The Open Championship and went after Spieth because between NBC and Coke they had loads of Spieth-centric "human interest" stories queued up to pad the coverage.

This would be the same Australia that's ninth on the medal list?

Does anyone care to read (or re-read) what Adam Scott had to say about Olympic golf?

Adam Scott's opinion isn't important, his opinion is what we tell him it should be because we are fans and we own them and they have to do exactly what we want them to do in order for us to fill a void in our miserable lives with living vicariously through pro athletes by imagining how we would act in the same situation and then holding someone to that same standard no matter how unreasonable it might be

Did not read link, but whether Adam Scott wants it or not, Justin Rose has something that Adam Scott doesn't.

Over 8 years that's like 7 posts a day. I haven't exactly had to cancel my vacations to post here. Look at the reactions to golfers not attending a tournament. Why do people care so much?

You made a snide, pompous comment belittling people who had remarks on Rory's statement as "miserable" and such. My life is quite fine, thank you. You spend a lot more time here than I do...look in the mirror, scooter.

You shouldn't have taken it so seriously, but I do think that a lot of people comment on pros based on how they feel they would react in the same situation, and usually that is looked at through rose coloured glasses.

If that offended you personally that wasn't the intention, I just used a little hyperbole to make the point.

Your comments toward me have been pretty much in the same manner though. So if you had an issue with the way I said things, you certainly had no issues going down to that level. So maybe we should both rethink our comments as being excessive. I regret using some terms of that post given the reaction. My mistake

Anyway, have a good one.

Fair enough.

Difference is Jeff's posts add value to the discussions on this site. Yours tend to be either mean, rude, or both.

How's that? How would you know how many times in my posts I've given someone advice on their clubs, or helped them with feedback, or given honest reviews, etc???

I was responding to him, not you. Please stay out of it.

So Rory broke his relative Twitter silence to tweet #karma, shortly after the Olympic Council of Ireland president Pat Hickey was arrested for corruption over ticketing in Rio. He quickly deleted the tweet but then when a journalist said 'referring to the arrest of Olympic council chief Pat Hickey?', he liked the tweet. Now if you check his Twitter he has liked several news outlets that have ran the story.

So basically this suggests that he didn't get on with the administration and management of the Irish Olympic team and might also suggest that there were some disputes about Nike/New Balance gear as part of his reason to withdraw.

The IOC chief of Ireland was probably mad at Rory, because without Rory there, he wouldn't make as much scalping golf event tickets.

Yeah but nobody wants to talk about that. We need to figure out whether Jordan and Rory are crying themselves to sleep over having missed their once in a lifetime chance.
