Rory McIlroy: "I'll watch the Olympics, but probably not golf. I'll watch track and field, swimming,

Recommended Posts

Bunch of tennis players bailed on the Olympic sh!t show today.

Also, the Rio organizers had to fire the main security contractor/firm when it came out that they had only hired 500 of the 3,400 security personal required - with less than a week before the opening ceremony. The local police are now tasked with taking over event and location security. What a cluster F.

This was the same in the UK in 2012. Had to call the Army in.

It's amazing to me how many people think golf shouldn't be part of the Olympics...or that it shouldn't be truly considered as great (if not greater) of an opportunity as the majors.

How many of you negative nancys realize it was PART of the Olympics years ago...?

I personally would want to win this as much as a major...if not more. What a great honor, and how bizarre that there's so many in our community that think so bizarrely of this opportunity/honor. Smh...

Personally I've soured on the Olympics, with corruption, greed, payola, allowing pros to play and ridiculous costs. It's not what it was 40 years ago.

As for golf, all these guys already play on the global stage plus Ryder Cup, Presidents cup etc. So IMHO Olympic golf is irrelevant because it's already done.

Perhaps if they'd done a scramble or some other unique type of game it would be interesting. But stroke play? Meh.

Yup. The Olympics (summer and winter) are a joke. What is exciting about watching professionals compete in events that you could watch them play at any other venue? National pride/prestige, my a**. It's all about making money. Throw in the mix the $h1t show they're running down in Brazil...**** that.

Hurdles you say? Turns out it's not all sunshine and rainbows in the hurdling world either:

http://www.sportingn...9g1p4tc39bv0xmd

The story is bad enough, but the real kicker is:

To make matters worse, when both men went to report the incident at a police station, they had to wait two hours behind a line of mugging victims.

Yep. Can't imagine why anyone would want to skip it.

C'mon man. That's a poor setup. You have GOT to tease that story with "Chinese hurdler vomited on and robbed."

This Olympics is going to be craptacular.

Yeah, that one was an embarrassment of riches. I just couldn't figure out how to succinctly word it that the vomit part was an intentional vomit, that the vomit was a planned part of the robbery.

I can't figure out if the intentional vomit is better or worse than having your lodgings intentionally set on fire so as to rob you of your computers and special Zika resistant clothing. At least when someone sets a fire in your lodgings in order to rob you, they're doing you the favor of pointing out that your smoke detectors aren't actually hooked up to anything. On the other hand, it's easier to get that puke smell out than it is to get the smoke smell out. Tough call.

I don't think the Olympics "fit" golf. The O used to be a test of amateur skill and ability. No more.

It hasn't been a "test of amateur skill and ability" for a long time now. Why make it a test of amateur skill when professionals do it better? Being a professional athlete alone doesn't make one automatically better than the best amateur/college athlete.

The US basketball dream team was created in 1992 in response to all the other countries sending THEIR professionals to play for them.

I can't believe the format they're using for this Olympic golf event. It's just another golf tournament! Ridiculous! No teams. Just 72 holes of golf. In the end, one person will come in first place.

That person will take home the gold metal.

Second place gets the silver and third gets the bronze.

Whoop de do. So stupid. They play tournaments like this every single weekend. It's literally meaningless.

Yep.

Not to mention that the reason they have the Olympics in the first place is so that athletes will get a chance to compete on an international platform and finally determine who the greatest in the world is at their sport. However, in golf we already know who the best is! The OWGR is calculated every week. But get this....the best in the world AREN'T EVEN COMPETING IN THE OLYMPICS. They all backed out. The top ranked player in the field is Stenson at #5.

Golf has missed a massive opportunity. The sport would have benefited from participation from those at the top of the sport.

Golf will be just fine. Dont need these foreigner olympic games ; )

Meanwhile....Golfsmith is going out of business: searching for a buyer or maybe just bankruptcy...

There's a little voice in the back of my head that's saying this whole Olympic Golf thing will somehow end up a disaster. I'm not sure exactly how, but I think it will have to do with the course itself.

Really should be teams match play by country. Not sure why it isn't except they have no clue about golf.

Ya lets not grow the game as Nike and Golfsmith bow out....Taylormade up for sale and I'm paying half price at nice courses cause numbers suck..... majors really doing their part to grow the game huh!

Who ever said golf on TV had anything to do with people playing the game? That sounds like something the Golf Channel and PGA Tour wants you to believe but I ain't buying it.

Somebody might watch golf on TV and decide to go yuck it up at a scramble a couple times a year but the people the game lives or dies with are the ones who play golf because they like playing...and then watch it on TV later, maybe.

Did you see the course?? It looks really really great. Made from scratch just for the Olympics. To bad it was made in a country the size of the USA with barely 10 thousand golfers.

I think everyone here is aware that golf was once part of the Olympics. The problem is that it was over 100 years ago.

Why was it ever taken out? Of any sport it is very low maintenance (you don't have to build a dozen stadiums at a tune of a trillion dollars) and it's as legitimate a "sport" as any other, ping pong and badminton being good examples that are less considered "sports" than golf. There are probably half a dozen other "sports" (speed walking a good example) that are less "sports" than golf.

I am with Phil Mickelson et al who were huge proponents of getting golf back in the Olympics.

The fact so many golf "fans" are so against it being in the Olympics defies logic. SMH

A lot of golf fans are against it bc they know the Olympics sucks and hasn't been relevant since maybe 1984. Golf is better than the Olympics and doesn't need it or the IOC and their bribery.

Some people sadly think the Olympics is the "greatest sporting event in the world". LOL. The Olympics is good for the IOC members, a few multinational corps, and a few podunk sports that don't have their own tv deals, fans, or avenues to otherwise compete.

People consider the Olympics to be the greatest sporting event in the world because it is. 8.2 million spectators watched the 2012 games along with billions on TV. Multinational companies know this which is why they que up to throw hundreds of millions of dollars at it. The only other sporting event that is in the same league is the Football World Cup. Nothing else comes close.

So yeah you might consider the Olympics irrelevant but your opinion is, quite frankly, irrelevant.

Olympics in general are definitely not irrelevant. But is Olympic golf relevant? I honestly don't know one way or the other but it is definitely a different question than Olympics in general.
