What in the world makes you think money has anything to do with it? You couldn't pay me enough to go to Rio. There are a myriad of reasons not to go Rio--like not wanting to get kidnapped and held for ransom or catching a disfiguring disease for your children. In fact the reasons not to go to Rio are much more numerous and make much more sense to me than the reasons to go to Rio.....which are what exactly again? "Olympic glory" (in the 72 hole stroke play format)? "Patriotism" (for someone born in the United Kingdom, living in Florida, playing for Ireland)? "Growing the game" (to boost Nike club sales....)? The Olympics likely hold more significance in the basketball universe. I wouldn't say basketball's history runs especially deep in the Olympics, but ever since the original Dream Team dominated the 1992 Barcelona games a lot of professional players are eager to duplicate the accomplishment.

 

NBA players get one chance a year to win significant hardware (O'Brien trophy) as the individual awards aside from MVP are rather lacking compared to the other professional sports (in the U.S.). Professional golfers are given the chance to win on an international stage nearly every week, against higher quality competition than the Olympic field will offer.

 

The Olympic effect on a golfer's legacy is an unknown quantity at this point. Majors and WGC's offer a more measurable, significant validation of any player's body of work as opposed to a gold medal, at least at this point. Also consider that Ryder Cup records are a significant element in evaluating golfers' career accomplishments and that is also an unpaid exhibition.

 

It's not a money issue. It's about personal safety, scheduling demands, and the perception that the juice isn't worth the squeeze because no one has medaled in the event in over a century.
