Successor to I-e1 (I-e2) due out soon? What is on your wish list?

Recommended Posts

Anybody know if this will be an incremental design change, a la i20 to i25, or something more significant?

Hard to picture a scenario where a significant change would be made. After all, it's just metal and composite materials on the end of a shaft.

There is only so much you can do with it.

True. Was asking along the lines of a cup face or v sole or slots, for example, or something significantly different than they've done in the past vs. changing the color scheme and moving a few grams of weight around.

Yeah, it's a fair question. There's always plenty they can do. Seems like they're trying to market the i-line as something low and high caps can play. With cup faces and slots and trying to make them a hot distance iron they might lose some of the better players who aren't interested in that. Maybe they would think about that stuff for the G or G-max line (at least that's my hope anyway)

I hope the I-e2 borrows heavily from the iblade with respects to the technology, construction and simplistic looks while also paying homage to the original eye 2s somehow. Maybe more of a raised toe and core eye? I am not an engineer but you can see where I am going with this. Whatever the case I really hope they go with a clean, simple cavity and get rid of the number on the clubface. While I am at it the PX LZ would be fun to try and a new PING cord "+4" grip would be t**** as well. Lastly, a rust or phoe becu finish would really be terrific!

I am curious how the proceed with model names. I'm a fan of continuous names like the Titleist with the CB, AP2, etc. (712, 712, 716) and Taylormade with the Tour Preferred MB, MC, etc. (2011 and 2014). I don't like the iE nomenclature. Maybe just the i and iBlade going forward.

Technically the new name of the iron is just "i"....they did however throw an E1 on to the back of the cavity presumably to denote Edition 1 or something along those lines. So I would think they did that so that future ones will still be just "i" but then E2, E3, and so on. I don't quite get it and think that's kind of weird thing that isn't going to roll off the tongue. Not sure what would have been the issue with i30, i35, and so forth. M

My biggest complaint is that it makes search on ebay more problematic since no everyone titles them consistently and when you search for PING i irons it spits back everything. i3, i20, i25, etc.

I'm almost positive that these are just "i" and a number (no "E"), although I'm not sure where the numbers are coming from this time.

A little bird told me that there is now at least a photo of them that has been released to the sales team to share with key accounts. I did not see the photo.

Somebody needs to post that photo, yo.

My set of Ping I are the best irons I have ever owned and I hope that the changes are small. Here's my list:

  • change badge color to a dark blue, white, or black (no yellow, orange, red, or any bright polarizing color)
  • change sole numbering style to that of the iBlade
  • change to the activated elastomer insert used in the iBlade

I hope not to see:

  • anything that resembles COR-Eye Technology (I did not like the feel or look of this in the G or Gmax series)

Echo all your comments. Black / white color scheme (lose the blue), simple graphics and not tricked up.

And definitely not a black iron finish.

I saw the iblades at Golftown over the weekend. Heads were nice looking in person, but the damn grips -- fu-gl-y. Black and white Golf Pride logoed label up. On a $1599 CDN set. That turned me right off them.

That grip has proven to be one of the most popular grips going.

Ping has a pretty decent set of options, if that is your beef.

The grip is the last thing I worry about when selecting irons - as it is the easiest to change.

Seriously. I've never understood gripes with stock grips. Heck Ping will even ship ungripped clubs if you want them.

Do we have confirmation that the iE1 replacement will be out this winter? I'll be in the market for new irons during the offseason and will likely wait to test these if so. Short list includes: iBlade, iE1 or iE1 replacement, AP2, TMB, PSi Tour, and 0311T.

February 2017.

And while they don't look like iBlades, let's just say . . . they will fit in the line nicely. They are clean.

Shaft options similar to the iBlade? That'd be fantastic.

I'm walking a very fine line here. I don't want to get anyone in trouble, but I want to share.

Let's just say that I think you will be happy. Possibly 16.6% happier.

Again, I have to be careful. How about "those people who were critical of the blue on the i-e1 will not be disappointed with the new i." But the cavity is not as smooth as the iBlade. However, I don't think what is there detracts from the appearance.

If it performs as good as it looks, I think Ping has another winner on its hands. My personal opinion is that the iBlade is the best looking iron Ping has ever made. But this is probably second.

Ok, that's all I'm willing to say.

just curious how were you able to see it? any idea of when reps might start seeing it and/or pics and info will start leaking?

Should be sometime this month. I have a meeting with my PING rep in a week and a half to talk about and see (possibly pictures only, he's not sure) the new additions for the first of the year.

Admittedly, I did not see the photo in person that apparently is out there, but I know someone that has and has briefly described the new i- very much like you have described it.

I understand the cavity has something in it to assist with weight and forgiveness. I cannot wait!!! I agree it is going to be a winner!
