Can I see Phil f****ing Mickelson, please? 3 holes of Zach Johnson is 3 more than I wanted to watch in my lifetime. Wouldn't even watch that guy if I won a contest and got to play 18 holes with him. And why the hell is Kevin Kisner 'featured' as part of anything? Jesus Christ. Get it the f*ck together, Masters.com

The afternoon featured groups look much better... but that's when the coverage is going on anyway.

Today:

  • 1:41 p.m.: Rory McIlroy, Hideto Tanihara, Jon Rahm
  • 2:03 p.m.: Bubba Watson, Dustin Johnson, Jimmy Walker

Tommorrow:

  • 1:41 p.m.: Jordan Spieth, Martin Kaymer, Matthew Fitzpatrick
  • 2:03 p.m.: Brandt Snedeker, Justin Rose, Jason Day

PREACH!! Rickie and Phil both making early charges...can't we switch our featured group coverage? It's 2017 for the love of god

i made it back home finally after sitting in ATL airport from 7pm until 1am, and my head hitting the pillow at 4am. others had it worse as they'd been in the airport since early morning, there were no hotels to be found anywhere, and most flights were canceled. i was lucky to get home at all.

anyway.....even with only 3hrs sleep i was ready to get to Augusta as early as possible. my hosts had attended multiple masters, and weren't quite so ambitious. when we finally got to the grounds about 9-915 i was so stunned by actually being on property and the scenery that i completely missed Lynn Swann greeting us at the entrance to Berckmans.

We grabbed some breakfast, which the Peach French Toast was unbelieveable, along with a couple bloody mary's, and were on our way out to the course at probably 945 when the first horn blew. we wandered around Berckmans for a while, and made our way into the proshop. The Palmer display they had at the entrance was a nice touch. I was eyeballing some vests/shirts in a glass case, when i noticed someone looking over my left shoulder. I glanced back and did the double take of all double takes - it was Sir Nick Faldo. I think he had his son with him too...for the most part people left him alone which I thought was nice.

Wandered around some more, grabbed a few beers they were handing out on trays (they were handing out fries and onion rings too), checked radar at the business center (which has its own story about some JPMorgan trader who apparently VPN'd into his desktop, had his trading screens open....and just left the computer that way), and went out to wait for people to be allowed back on course as the storm had mostly cleared.

We went over to the outside bar, up against the putting greens, which was a freaking fairy tale of a setting. Our host saw one of their other business associates, who apparently was entertaining Ms. Manning (Payton's wife), so that was a rather random and interesting introduction. Sat there and sipped on a coffee and bailey's, when the voice of god finally said we would be allowed back out. Went over to take a quick leak, and as we got to the gate another lighting flashed overhead and we had to stand there waiting in the rain for another 30min. I was getting pretty discouraged at that point, as it was already approaching noon.

Finally they let us out and once we emerged from behind 13 green/14 i was stopped in my tracks and completely in awe of the scale of the place. The width of the fairways, depth of color of the fairways, and the aura of being out there made everything better. did a quick walk between 14/15, over to 10 green, took a look at the tee shot on 18 (not as claustrophobic as it looks), then went back to 11 tee so we could walk amen as intended. i could've stood at the corner of 11green/12 tee for hours even with nobody playing. everywhere we went, me and the other guy who never had been there were reminded of things that happened at this or that spot....bubba's hook on 10, mize's chip in, jordan's struggles, phils shot from the pinestraw, couples ball magically staying dry, tigers chip in at 16, etc etc. incredible.

we did stop behind 12 quick to get a pimento and cold beer to check that item off the list as well. did not disappoint.

one of the volunteers said the par 3 was going on ( i still don't know), so we were making our way across the front 9 cutting across 6, 8, 3, and were about to climb the hill to the clubhouse when they blew the horn again and announced they were evacuating the property.

i got to see most of the course, but didn't get to walk it in order as i wanted. i was happy to not have the day be a total waste, but never saw a single golf shot. we were also invited into the TV production truck, but couldn't ever make it because we were trapped at Berckmans (i know, you all feel sorry for me). We were also invited by our source for the Berckmans passes into the members clubhouse, but again, couldn't make it. didn't get to putt on the greens at Berckmans either.

don't get me wrong, i did the most important things i was there to do...see the golf course...but i'd be lying if i said i wasn't a little disappointed. i certainly didn't convey anything but appreciation and joy to my hosts for affording me the opportunity to be there - but they knew i wasn't just a casual patron and felt bad about the way things turned out. the upside is that they're already working on getting me back out there to go play Augusta...which obviously....would make all the challenges of this trip worthwhile.

so yeah....there's my experience with the 2017 Masters.

Here's me watching the featured AM groups:

"Holy [bleeping] [bleep]! Adam Scott has a perfect swing! Why in the world doesn't he win every week?!?"

"Pretty sure watching Zach Johnson swing is making me a worse golfer as we speak, and pretty sure he'd get absolutely waxed in any one of our local city/club championships. How in the world did he ever win anything?!?"

Funny game, eh?

Thanks. Was just thinking the same thing myself. Gee, the stuff people blow a gasket over.

Anyone else old enough to remember when coverage consisted of the back nine only?

That really sucked compared to our options today.

Yes. I remember those days well. It was like this weird hill they were prepared to die on, even after other tournaments expanded their weekend coverage, even in some cases--GASP!--extending to Thursday and Friday on USA or TNT or whatever it was.

The other day their website was replaying the full Sunday TV broadcast from Tiger's win in '97. It was 3 hours of golf + the trophy ceremony. And by "of golf" I mean 50% Jim Nantz running his mouth in that special reverent way he has. So take comfort in that not changing I guess. I think my favorite '97 Nantz-ism I caught was him talking about the Butler Cabin: "Maybe.......someday.......they'll call it.......the 'Tiger's Den.'" Christ. He stayed up late coming up with that one, wrote it down in a notebook, and then waited for the perfect time to drop it.

Mike Weir is hard to watch. Feel for him.

He's still a mess from that Stack and Tilt disaster. He changed his swing and didn't have to. Poor guy. He hasn't recovered.

And?

It's 2017. You can tune in to live footage of all 972 animals at your local zoo, from an elephant all the way down to the spotted-wing vinegar fly, yet we can't see more than 12 players at at time at the most entertaining golf tournament of the year?

It's a joke.

And now we have all 18 holes all four days in HD with an evening replay Thursday & Friday plus we can watch on the computer or smartphone if we can't get to a TV. And we still complain.

Hah, actually thought I was agreeing with you about how much better the coverage is today. Having said that, I will admit that watching Zach Johnson play golf is like watching flies f**k. Gets the job done, but just doesn't look right...

GO PHIL!!!

Whoever decided on the featured groups today needs sacking. I'd have preferred to have watched highlights for a couple of hours, then watched a decent group.

May the great Phil Mickelson keep this sweet start going. :)

Sir Phil is going LOW today. Anything more than a 63 and I'll be disappointed.

Would love to see him get a 4th green jacket. If he shoots 63 today, I like his chances as long as he isn't paired with Stenson on Sunday in the final group.

Phil tying the course record today in these conditions? I'll never say never but I'd bet a boatload of money against him doing so.

Well, he just gave two back at 5 and 6. Anything at par or better is going to be good today.
