When you ask for a forgiving iron

NikeSwoosh13

Recommended Posts

What exactly is forgiving to you?

Does it mean on your mis-hits that you don't lose much yardage?

Does it mean that the particular set of irons are long and you gain yardage

People have mixed opinions, to me when I want a forgiving iron then I'm wanting a iron to add a club in distance. What is the definition of forgiveness to you?

In my opinion, a more forgiving set of irons should give you more consistent and predictable yardages and direction even on mis-hits. I don't want to lose too much distance on mis-hits or go over the green either when I hit it flush.

I don't want my irons to go longer. I just need it to go the same distance every time.

Forgiveness is directional for me. Still goes in the general vicinity of where I'm aiming

Forgiveness, to me, means high launch and low spin with consistent ball speeds across the face. Lower the spin to keep the ball fight straighter, get some serious launch out of them so they descend into the greens steeper, and give me consistent ball speeds across the face so I don't lose much distance on mishits.

At the end of the day a club can only be so forgiving directionally. An over the top swing with an open face is going to cut the ball and slice it no matter what and there is no amount of forgiveness that can correct that and fly the ball straighter. I would say the largest aspect of forgiveness is focused on distance control.

For me, it's distance - will the ball get most of the way to where I want it to go if I catch it on the toe a little, or thin. If it hooks (my miss), that's a result of my swing path and face angle at impact - both of those are my fault, and no club will forgive that.

A mid-sized iron with a bit of perimeter weighting. Basically something that doesn't have a sweet spot the size of a chickpea.

That's why I love Mizuno's JPX Forged irons so much...they're just the right blend of feel, size, and looks for my swing. A one-piece, midsized forging with decent distance and good looks at address.

I made the switch to GI after playing a mix of player and semi-player designs for a number of years. I chose this route knowing my practice and play time would plummet with a new job and additional education. The one thing that drove me nuts more than anything with most GI designs now was that when hitting them consistently on center with good, consistent swings, I'd get very variable distances. That, and feel, is the reason why I chose a set of G30s over the Gs. MUCH more consistent distances, and as much forgiveness as I could want. Plus, I can still move the ball around with them, which was more difficult for me with the Gs.

Forgiveness is when a less than perfect strike produces acceptable results. Limited distance loss and the ball holds the intended line of flight.

A real forgiving club usually also offers the same feel no matter how you strike it. There are clubs out there that feels the same whether you flushed it or hit it off the toe or heel.

Here's an example of forgiveness and why I'll never sell my Speedblades. Playing in a scramble. 215y to pin. A comfortable 4i can go 200-205 for me, so I had to swing out of my shoes for this one.

I swing so hard that I hit the ball way out on the toe - OFF THE GROOVED AREA - the ball still went 210 yards and landed on the green. Unbelievable!

... Varies depending on what type of iron. I alternated last season between Fly Z+ and 588 TT's. What I found were slight mishits (1/2-3/4" from center) with the TT's traveled farther and straighter than those off the Z+ especially in the mid and long irons. I am not talking night and day but a about 5-10 yds distance and maybe a less less directionally depending on contact. This only happened once or twice a round. So for me the TT's were more forgiving and influenced me to by some Srixon 545's that provide the feel of the Z+ and the forgiveness of the TT's.

I could probably play an iron with the MOI of Adam Scott's 690mb's if it had a fat sole like my Ping G series. For me forgiveness is almost entirely down to the ability to skid through slightly fat contact and still get 95% of my normal distance and to let me survive the occasional steep slam of with a short iron and not have bones crushed in my hands.

If an iron also lets me get a little bit of air under the ball on thin shots and stay in the right ZIP code when I catch one high and toward the toe that's a bonus.
