I am a mizuno fan for sure but anyone of those guys would dump em for TM blade and 100m dollars.....

 

These comments kind of blow me away. Aren't almost all muscle backs very similar in looks. I mean you can only shape there muscle so many ways. It probably just happens to work best having all these muscle in the bottom half of the back of the club. You can find a muscle back from almost every company that has the same look. Minus Callaway since they are relatively new to the mb category.

I hear ya, its mainly aesthetics. people always talk "technology" when it comes to clubs....when they have built in GPS or wi-fi, let me know... :)

The Bobby Jones blades were muscle back castings. 1990s vintage Callaway had a muscle back iron..

MACHINING THE RORS PROTOS

When we do one-off iron sets like this, it can be a very involved process. We need a large block of steel for each head because we cut each head from a solid piece of steel. We used 304 Stainless, which is a softer material that we would normally use to make putters, so it has a similar hardness to a forged iron.

 

Each steel block was individually milled. After milling, each iron was hand-finished by Kia Ma in our Tour Department. We gave him direction on what type of surface finishes we wanted and he polished each head one by one

The most eye-catching addition to McIlroy's bag is the new iron setup that features a custom set of P700 Series "Rors Proto" irons (5-9) that he worked closely with the company's R&D team to develop. The traditional muscleback has a shorter blade length, reduced offset and a thinner topline that McIlroy prefers.

 

"That's something I've been consistent with and played the whole way throughout my career,” McIlroy said. “I love the finish on them. If anything, I told Keith based on what I was paying before, the topline was just a little thick for my liking, so they thinned it out for me. The iron setup is still a little bit new to me, but what I've seen from testing it's going to be really good. "

 

What was your initial impression when you saw the prototype irons for the first time?

 

McILROY: “I still remember I was on the range at The Bear's Club with [Dustin Johnson] and he saw the irons in my bag and immediately made a call to someone at TaylorMade to make sure he got a set. They just look good. I love the compact head and the topline just really suits my eye. I also feel like even if I hit these irons a bit off-center, they still go, which is really nice to have with a blade.”

I could be wrong but I think they're milled from a block of forged steel. So they are forged AND milled
