Play with Wedding Ring

Recommended Posts

Just recently got married (thank you, thank you) and tried to play golf with my wedding ring on, as tribute to my everlasting vows to my lovely wife. For information, I'm a left handed player with an interlocking grip. With that said, I found the ring to be a terrible distraction while gripping the club, and something that I could not overcome all day long. I want to take the general opinion on things, from both lefties and righties - ring or no ring?

I've been married 40 years and have lost 4 wedding rings. I always took them off at work as I considered any ring a safety hazard after I hung myself by a ring one night climbing over s cyclone fence. I've gotten used to it while playing golf, but it did take some time.

Like Baitkiller said - get a clone for when you lose yours.

If I told Mrs. Spud that I wanted to take my ring off to play a round of golf, she'd probably reply that she'll take hers off when she's out with her friends, too...

You could make a case for taking off your ring if it were a safety hazard (as above). Golf does not qualify.

Some athletic tape may help in the transition, but make yourself do it. There's enough to deal with in a new marriage without a self-inflicted wound like losing a wedding ring at a golf course.

If you must, at least take it off your left hand and put it on your right hand. Then it's not in your interlocked fingers.

"take that, you miserable little white swine!"

some good advice here, but I'm actually asking more about the presence of the ring affecting my golf swing! For a lefty with an overlapping grip, the ring is very much in the forefront of your mind when you hold the club. I'm looking for thoughts on that. Regarding cloning my wedding ring - I think that's a very good idea - will do!

Exact same boat as you. I always take off my ring to play golf. I either leave it in my car in the cup holder or I have a valuables bag where I place it. I haven't had any issues yet losing my ring (knock on wood).

Another lefty here and I can't stand rings. Today is actually our 7th anniversary and I didn't wear my ring while golfing for almost all of it. My wife just bought me one of those silicon rings and it's the only ring I can wear while playing sports. It still felt weird at first to me but I'm used to it now and haven't taken it off.

As a righty, it doesn't affect me at all.

As a lefty, I'd definitely take it off.

As above, purchase a cheaper ring to wear to and from the golf course that you take off when you play. When you inevitably lose it, you'll still have your real wedding ring that you keep in your top drawer and wear all other times. If you take it off enough, you will lose it.

After losing two rings in the last 31 years I went the Qalo route. You can wear it and not ever notice it while gripping the club.

I have a wide wedding band that gives me awesome blood blisters if I try hit balls with it on. So it comes off every time I play golf.

When I first started reading I was assuming righty and I know I don't have any problems with mine. When i got to the lefty part I realized how bad that must feel and immediately changed into "it would have to come off mode". I have lost one myself when I was first married while taking it off for work. I now never take it off. I do think it would be a good idea to leave it in the same place in your vehicle every time. This eliminates any chance of losing on the golf course. I

Did you not think about the impact to golf when you got married?!!!

I had mine made, so had it deliberately made thinner and with a profile so that it doesn't become an annoyance when gripping a club.... now the only annoyance is the wife!

I'm like you. A lefty with an interlocking grip. I tried to play golf with my wedding band on after first getting married. After a few holes I knew it wasn't going to work. I now leave my wedding ring at home before going to play golf. I like to know it's safe and secure rather than putting it in my golf bag while playing.

Same here Cup holder or my valuables bag. Watch & Ring.

Just find it hard to get a good grip with my ring.

I don't really take mine off for anything. I'm a right handed player, so it is under the glove and doesn't really bother me. I do have an impressively large callus on the pad of my hand at the base of my ring finger, though.

Same here, took a couple of rounds to get used to the "pinch" it made but now it doesnt bother me. Bigger callous than when i was a teenager.

Also figured the extra weight from the ring would lead to greater club speed and longer drives, now carrying it over 350.
