Cameron Flow Neck Mallet

So I picked up a Cameron Futura X5 on eBay and I have a hair brained idea to remove the shaft and shaft spud and then replace with a flow-neck spud (think Justin Thomas putter). I have access to a machine shop, so making/bending the new spud should be fairly simple. I've done it w/ a couple of standard putters but simply welded them where the old neck was. This putter has a hole there which should allow it to be epoxied first before full commitment... hopefully it would allow it to be put back to original setup if the experiment fails.

The question is how easy it is to remove that spud once the shaft is off. In the article below, Scotty states they are pressed in and welded, but in the picture I found, I don't see any evidence of a weld. This also seems like a really labor intensive manufacturing process by SC that isn't necessary... but, maybe thats just me hoping its not welded!

Has anyone removed one of these?

I've handled a few of these for refinishing projects and as far as I can tell, the spud is permanently affixed. I haven't seen any evidence of a hole. Even if there was a hole, it wouldn't be at the correct angle for a flow neck - it would need to be perpendicular to the topline.

So I presume you would just slice off the spud and weld on your custom made flow neck.

I still cannot fathom why this model is not being brought to retail, especially when this style is so popular on your.

Would it not sell in droves??

Do you mean the flow neck as which I also agree 100% or the head shape? The shape can still be gotten in the 33" Cameron and Crown range and are pretty easy to find on eBay etc.

But after having a new 5W for 3 weeks I can totally see why the pro's prefer the flow neck and in typical Cameron fashion I think its terrible that its not offered to retail when it seems to be a better design. The transition from shaft to head with the bent shaft design just feels and looks really awkward.. Id be trying to weld a flow neck to mine as well if someone can work out a reliable process to do so.

Slighter did mine / did what you're describing.

http://www.golfwrx.c...y-tom-slighter/

I think I might send my off to have it done as the result looks great. Would you mind commenting and how you found the change and is the improvement worth the effort?

I had been waiting on the spider release as I'd been a 1.5 neck guy forever. I was a little underwhelmed when I rolled the spider. About that time, Thomas was going nuts in Hawaii.

I had used Slighter before- he turned my Kingston KP1 into a 1.5 neck.

It's an awesome putter, couldn't be happier. Tom spec'd it out just exactly as ordered.

Two observations - it told a while to find a grip that really made it come alive for me. I had gone SNSR, Matador, GTR.... I finally landed in tried and true 2.0 and it's perfect. Second, the neck adds about 20g, so I had messed around with 5s and 10s off ebay until I got it just right between weights and grip. Now I'm good to go and haven't looked back. It's a very confidence inspiring setup with wonderful feel.

Can't recommend Tom enough.

I ended up sending it to Slighter as well. I've already got it back, but haven't gripped it or rolled it yet. Good advice on the grip, I'll keep that in mind. I agree that I can't recommend Tom enough. Quality of the work is awesome and seriously couldn't find a nicer guy to work with!

I had Tom do it to my X7M and it's been a struggle. The GTR Tour Grip has made it one round & is coming off tonight. Changed the weights from 20 to 10 & putting a pingman back on it. Just ordered a tank 1w as a backup, just in case.....

But I will say that Tom is the best there is to deal with.

I would love to see some pics of a X7M that has a flowneck, do you have it posted anywhere?

I agree what a weak attempt to force a model down peoples throats. Everybody want a X5 slant neck and he drops this hoping to take some $$$$ before releasing what the public wants.

This is about the cheapest way possible to do this... it's almost embarrassing for Scotty. Come on, you really can't release a slant or flow neck to the public?

This is ridiculous. You know they are going to release a limited run version with a flow neck at some point and then next year probably have a regular model with a flow neck.

It seems that since the TM spider tour came out, and now the Odyssey 7s (I have a black on order) and now this Scotty 5.5 .. the flow neck is all the rage

I spoke with Scotty at the PGA show 18 months ago and he told me to stay with a 1.5 neck based on my stroke .. but I prefer the look of mallets .. a conundrum

But now ... it sure looks like all the mfr's are coming up with toe hang mallets ..... all of a sudden .. Bueller !!!!!!!!!

FWIW ... I spend a year looking for a bronze #7 w a flow neck (I think a member on here has 2 of them)

It is pretty simple. He will never make a putter too close to what he offers tour players. You want A slant neck, you pay 4 digits for it. He probably loses sleep over the fact that the mallets are basically the same shape as the tour putters. It is quite the racket; tmag and Odyssey offer tour putters for a moderate upcharge, but scotty knows how to protect his gear. I have my one scotty, but wont buy another.
