I hit pretty much everything in the category at CC this morning. Fitter put this head on first while we settled on a shaft (ended up in the Accra FX 2.0 300H M5), then we cycled through heads. I was swinging around 105, transition is pretty fast and I tend to spin the ball a lot. My iron shafts are C-Taper 130x. Here are my thoughts:

  • xforged: Best feel, and most forgiving. Looks great at address. I ended up in this one, bent to 16.5 degrees. Most were carrying 240-245 with a few over 250. Spin around 3k, was getting a really good low traj and pretty good dispersion.
  • fli-hi: Second best, liked the feel but was obviously less forgiving and wasn't able to get the same ball speed out of it. Def harder to hit off the deck.
  • tmb: Wanted to like this, but spun too much and launched too high. Didn't love the feel.
  • u65: too chunky for me, just didn't set up well
  • cbx iron-wood: this thing goes for miles, but plays (and looks) more like a hybrid than a driving iron

I didn't hit the p790, which I would have liked to try but seems like it probably launches too high/spins too much for me (similar to tmb). Will try to share some trackman numbers if I get them.

Is the consensus that the UT is easier to hit than the U65? Looking for a hybrid replacement and cannot demo much around here. Was able to hit the UT in PX 6.0, but was hitting it a little too low. Was very easy to hit and felt very forgiving for it's profile. I think if I got a graphite shafted version, I could get the launch up considerably. The U65 can be had for much cheaper. Also, I would imagine it would blend well with my current set (even though the sole is ginormous). I have also read that the stock graphite shaft is not the best.

At the end of the day, I am looking to hit this club from a variety of lies. There are 2-4 holes (depending on wind direction) on my home course where I could definitely use this off the tee. But, on long par 5's into the wind, it would be nice to have a shot that doesn't balloon like a hybrid does.

I found the Callaway to be more forgiving across the face. The u65, when flushed, is awesome but if i missed i got punished. Not so much with the Callaway. Ymmv.

I was hoping for someone to come in and say the opposite! The U65 can be had on the bay for about $100 less than the X Forged UT. There are a couple good deals on steel shafted versions, but I really think I'll need to get graphite of some sort to help get the launch up a little bit.

Thanks for the input. Without being able to actually try this stuff, I really have to rely on the input of the GolfWRX community for a lot of this stuff.

dont sleep on the u45. Can be bought for a song these days. Comes with a nippon shaft as stock who help launching the ball. Also, i went with the 20* to help me.

I ended up getting an x forged ut. I just didn't like all that junk in the trunk that the Srixons had. Plus, it was really the only one I could try. Got it from eBay with a 20% coupon. So it was a decent price. Has a Motore Speeder ts 8.8 in it. Got it Wednesday, but haven't had a chance to get out and try it yet.

Don't settle in until you really hit the 790 UDI. It's in a different league. It will be a close competitor to your UT (and I love the UT).

I still love my X forged utility. I swap it in and out depending on where I’m playing. I find it higher launching than an iron, but not a hybrid. Remember folks, this is an iron replacement not a hybrid.

Just got my X Forged UT 24* ( Bent to 25*) hoping to get consistent distances unlike the 26* Apex HYB I've been playing.

Only have one extended range session, but so far it looks promising. Nice high flight, can knock it down if I want and i goes the right distance for what I'm trying to achieve.

Modus 105 stiff to match my irons.

Off topic, but tell me about your irons. I’m a digger, and have been fascinated by the sole on those. How’s the turf interaction, and would you recommend for someone who digs? Thanks.

I hit the UDI, and am still going to go with the Cally because:

  • The 790 is actually too long. Either it will go the same distance as my 3/4 wood, just with a slightly different flight or I have to bend it weak and then it launches a little higher than I want.
  • The Cally blends a little better with my CF16 irons on looks/sound/feel

Lighter weight and higher launch. I like graphite in mine. But, 85 grams is pretty light for an iron. Would like to get something in the low 100 gram range.
