3 wood advice please

After any advice to fill the last spot in my bag. Sits between driver & 3 hybrid. I’d like something that offers a good balance between use off the tee and fairway. Kind of need to keep it to Callaway, Cobra, Mizuno, Ping & Titleist to work with my local shop. Last 3 wood was a Titleist 910 Fd(15 deg) which was great off the tee but a struggle for me when hitting off the deck. Any advice would help to narrow the list & give me a start point to get fitted.

The Titleist TSR fairway woods have been Titleist’s best I’ve had.  Definitely one’s to test.

TSR2 from Titleist is pretty good at both, but I also mainly use that off tee and 5 wood for off deck. Ping G430 fairways are cheat codes I have found, as that replaced by tsr2 5 wood and I haven’t looked back.

Try a lower spinning 4 wd. Some manufacturers call them 3HL. Cobra, Titleist, and Callaway offer those options.

Whatever model you can find that suits your eye and goals in a 3HL 16.5 aka 4 wood.

I’d probably stay away from Ping, as I found the G430 too shallow to easily hit off a tee. I like the face profile of my Rogue ST Max and use it to hit off the tee and from the fairway. I’ve heard great things about the newer Ai Smoke Max. The Callaway faces seem like a nice middle ground between shallow and deep.

Unless you are chasing for the maximum distance with the newest tech, I would also look at Callaway CPO for older ones. Their non-low spin lines have been very easy to hit off the deck (I still love my Mavrik 3 wood though it may not be the longest). All other non-low spin lines have been as easy.

I use the Paradym 3HL and really like it.  So easy to hit off the tee or deck.

I agree. I have a similar setup going DRV, 3W, 3H but added a 4H this year. I game Callaway Paradym 3W HL at 16.5. It's very long and no issues off the deck or out of the tee box. I do tee it very low.

Consider a 4W. Generally around 16.5° - 17°, a little extra loft really helps with launch. And a slightly shorter shaft can help with control. (Note: 3WHL often have 17°, but have the longer 3W length shaft that doesn't help with control.)

 

Several years back the Tour Edge rep was showing off the latest Exotics fairway woods. He had the willing golfers hit the 3W and the 4W. For most of the golfers, the 4W as more reliable and went just as far as good 3W hits.

 

And not just for average golfers. Some of the big hitters also did better with a 4W - it depends in part on how you come into the shot.

 

Also... in Pingland, golfers sometimes take the 17.5° 5W and deloft it to 16.5°. Plus, you can flatten lie slightly if needed.

I have a Radspeed Tour 5w turned down to 16°. It's a rocket launcher but it is small. It's like a FW/Hybrid hybrid.

I recommend a ping 425 lst 3 wood. It’s a rocket off the tee, but the face is super shallow to where it’s easy to hit from turf. Easy to set up square during the set up prior to the shot.

Agree! For most golfers, 4wd and 7wd result in the best makes and best misses.

As others have said, the 3HL models seem to provide the best of both worlds.   I went without a fairway for years because I couldn’t find the right mix, this year I put the Rogue ST LS 3HL in the bag and it’s been perfect both off the tee and off the deck.

Make sure you at least try the ai smoke max. It's long, forgiving and launches easily.

G430 Max would be my recommendation. Easiest 3 wood I've ever hit.
