Single Length Updates (post'em up!)

I received my cobra black forged ones and got my first round in today. I am coming from rsi2's and have never played sl. I play to about a 6 and shot 78 with a ton of wind. Gaps were good and distances were about the same as my rsi2's. Ball striking was excellent! The 2 things that stand out to me was the chipping with the black forged one sand wedge and punching with the 5 iron. Both are super easy to do with the sl. Really surprised with the sw. I thought I'd struggle with it but it was awesome. Hit a couple out of the sand with the sw and caught both a little fat, but both got out and on the green. I don't see them going anywhere for a while.

You already said it, they're sexy as $hit! Lol. I tried the f7's and didn't like the feel of the ball off the club face. I liked the other forged ones, but just couldn't get over the look of the blacks. I may should've added, that I play 2* flat on my irons, but ordered these just the way they came from cobra. Never thought about the lie angles while playing. Hit them fine.

I'm a believer, but I'm going to start this season making a run at coming up with the best-performing conventional set I can fit myself to. Last couple of years I mostly played SL, and liked it. But I want to see if I can do better with VL, or not. Better for me would be more distance and height on 5 iron, more height on 6 iron. And then see if I hit the VL wedges any closer, or not. One of the reasons I have done better with SL is that I have long had a mental block in setup when irons get much over 37 inches. I worked on that this winter, which is why I want to give VL another shot.

This winter in AZ I played my set that has 1/4 inch gaps, which tops out at 37.5" on the 5 iron. It's been very good for me over the years, but by the end of my time out there I was missing my SL set. So we'll see what shakes out. I think the odds are that I'll end up with SL before the season is out.

Is anyone playing single length in their 7-6-5 and below but standard in their 8-9-P and up? I’d be interested in that setup.

I'm super intrigued by the Edel SL irons. Last year I went through the Edel putter fitting and I absolutely loved everything about the fitting process and the outcome has been great with my custom putter. Everything I've seen and read about the iron fitting process is really interesting. I'm loving my P790 irons but when it comes time to move on I think I'm going to jump in and go for the Edel fitting.

I had thought about it but I’m gonna stick out the full SL set a bit longer. There’s somewhat of a mental block with the wedges and short irons to go after them a bit harder than you think even on partial shots that I assume is because of the weight.

Finally gave up on mine and went back to VL. Had a set of the edel’s. Hit some of my best shots and my cap actually dropped slightly during the fall while using them. I just could not get comfortable with the lower 4 iron flight and the towering wedge flights visually. However, had more tap in birdies with the 6-9 than any other set I tried last year

From an outsider perspective I think playing these irons to lower your cap and have more tap in birdies would out weigh the trajectory?

I have dealt with the lower long irons and higher short irons too...by seeing my cap drop and scores get lower. I stopped caring because my results were improving.

This is the setup I think I am going back to. I just ordered the 790s 8/9/P/G with the Recoil 110s.

I think I am going to be happier with the yardage gapping coming back down a bit. Right now I have such a gap between my G and 54* that - coincidentally or not - I end up having to fit a lot of shots into. And I love the top of my bag so much I'm not willing to change that either. We'll see how it goes, I ordered them 1* strong and 1/2" long too, I think spreading that out a bit will be better in the long run. As always, this is subject to change lol.

I still love the 5-6-7 though. I dont have any trajectory issues at all.

I would 100% agree. Honestly I think boredom as much as anything had me looking for a reason to swap out:)

Am I reading this correctly...you got rid of them because you got bored hitting the ball so well???

Ha, it does read like that. I've tried just about everything from SL, to blades to ping g series irons and I honestly see very little difference. The single length was very good for me in 6-9 but was weaker in the wedges where I couldn't control trajectory. The long irons were straighter but relied more on roll out than carry and I have always been able to hit my long irons high enough to reasonably hold a green. I could have easily made SL work but I love to tinker and wanted to go back to VL. If I was to do it again, I think I would want a SL hybrid for the 4 and maybe even the 5 and would go with a slightly shorter W-LW.

All in all I think SL is a sound system and I think would really help some.

Well, the curiosity bug bit me. Just ordered a set of Cobra King Forged One Length with the Nippon shafts 4-PW on 3balls for $360 shipped after a couple discounts. I figure at that price I should be able to break even selling them in a couple months if they don't work out for me since the Forged Ones seem to be trending around $450 on eBay.

What were your discounts?

I did it last year and got my irons in February. I had to wait to order because I was repairing damage to my home from Hurricane Harvey.

I have 5-GW. I love them. Shots that would have been 'good' with my old irons are now GREAT...and my 'great' shots are freaking amazing. Bad swings...well...the clubs are good, but they're not magical. :)

The fitting process is very thorough and I enjoyed it. Would highly recommend it.

I want to get an Edel Wedge and putter fitting done as well...just trying to find time.

I posted a lengthy review of my fitting here: http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/1566696-edel-sls-01-fitting-todayreviewresults/

Knockdown9, Can you order just 6-9 from Edel? Sounds like the new cobra one length utility in the 4 and 5 along with your Vl wedge of choice for PW-LW would be the perfect setup.

You can order whatever you want from Edel in any configuration you want.

Got my full second round in with the black forged tec ones. Shot 74 and played pretty well. My only prob is I'm struggling with the 5 and 6 irons. Everything else is money! Long, straight, and high. 5 and 6 isn't terrible but pull hooking both of them. May just be over swinging subconsciously. I moved the ball up in my stance and "pulled" more and it got better but still went left. Still a bit of "work in progress" I guess.
