Morning Drive...What Happened?

It's like 24 hour news channels. There is only so much to talk about. Having a daily, two hour golf news program is just not a good idea.

Other than actual golf coverage, there is nothing worth watching on TGC. I'm glad it came bundled with YouTube TV, but if it didn't, I wouldn't miss it much.

Having a two hour show is a bad idea? What else would bring better ratings?

Golf Channel is on channel 59 where I live. Weather Channel is channel 58. Usually when I get up in the morning I turn on channel 58 and see what the weather is going to be. I think of Jim Cantore, Stephanie Abrams, etc... as having credibility because they are certified meteorologists, experts in their field. When they say something I believe them. After a few minutes I will switch to channel 59, Golf Channel where I see Kara Robinson, Matt Ginella, Damon Hack, Lauren Thompson, Bailey Mosier, and the list goes on. They all seem like nice people, but they have no expertise as golfers. I just don't want to watch someone on TV who's not a professional golfer talk about golf. That being said, unless there's someone on set that has credibility as a player (Charlie, Paige, Robert, even Gary) I tend to change the channel. If I turn on the Weather Channel one day to find Damon Hack trying to explain why an occluded front has stalled east of the Mississippi I will probably change the channel there too.

Very similar to my morning routine. Damon Hack and Matt Ginella are the two who get the channel changed in hurry.

Well, at least Damon Hack knows nothing about the Biathlon he's covering in PyeongChang and kinda admits it.........lol

The one thing with him you can’t fault is his enthusiasm. He actually seems like he would be a pretty cool person to just hang out and talk with. Just doesn’t add much to what is a specialty show.

All of a sudden Ginella is promoting a value list.

Let me guess $100 rounds vs $200.

No, now he’s talking $50 and $60. He might actually provide something useful.

Wow. I am totally shocked.

Who are these two meatheads that they’re giving airtime to this morning?

Haha that was Riggs and Trent that do the 'Fore Play' podcast. They're not so much golf analyst type guys - more common man weekend golfer banter. I thought they did a decent job on GC this morning.

TaylorMade QI10 9* - Fujikura Ventus TR Blue 8TX

TaylorMade Stealth+ 15* - Fujikura Ventus Red 9TX

NIKE Vapor Fly Pro 3-4i - Fujikura Pro Tour Spec 95X

Mizuno JPX 919 Tour 5 - KBS Tour 130X

Mizuno JPX 919 Tour 6-PW - DG TI X100

Mizuno T22 Raw 50* S, 55* D | TaylorMade Hi Toe 60* - DG TI S400

The openly rooting against other players really was off putting to me.

I thought this was really funny this morning.

He said he'd never played Wildhorse. I don't know how you end up in Mullin, but didn't play Wildhorse!

Because its goes against his constant narrative that only $150+ courses are worth playing. The only sub $100 course he could find was 9 holes. Really? Geez.

In a way Morning Drive would be better off with a two-person format like they did in the old days with Williams and Kuselias. How can you establish any continuity when the person you look at from across the desk changes daily? I guess if as long as Lauren Thompson is always there, it makes no difference.

And do away with the Folgers cups...unless they actually drink out of them (lol)!!!

Read the first 3 pages then skipped to the end, so apologies if this has been brought up already...

My biggest disappointment with Morning Drive, living in AZ, is when they repeat the second hour twice. Today, they had a 5 am segment that I caught the very end of, then the second hour ran at 6, 7 and 8 (AZ time) At the end of the first hour, Charlie Rymer was talking about his experience at the Champions tournament last weekend, but I didn't catch much of it. The conversation did not happen during the second hour. Unfortunately, it seems that this is happening more and more. Why do they re-air hour 2 twice and not re-air the first hour?

RDD -- like your insights on the program. It seems that you have become more comfortable in front of the camera. I have become a fan.

Another thing they seem to be doing is running some of the same segments calling them 'live' when they were actually taped the hour before, in the window of the two-hour 'live' broadcast.

They have been doing that for quite a while. Filler...

Hit the ball.
Find the ball
Repeat until the ball is in the hole.
Have fun.

I've always defended DJ, but him trying to explain his swing right now on MD is painful. He is basically saying he doesn't know what his swing keys are and that, uh, he just swings.

I called BS on Fred Couples when I saw him give a Clinic when I was in college. After knowing him later in life, I realized he was telling the truth.

Outside of a couple “feels”, I guarantee DJ doesn’t really know swing keys

I'm actually enjoying MD this morning - although I can't see it, my puppy snagged my chair and I'm in the dining room, but listening. Full disclosure, the only reason it's on is I turned on the Euro golf because on my TV schedule it was supposed to be on until 7:30, so at 6:30 turned it on and at 7 - Morning Drive - bait and switch!

Glad they are giving this junior event lots of love, and I enjoy Charlie - he seems to have a big heart. Haven't seen (heard, lol) RDD - need more of him.

Edit: LOL, from my keyboard to RDD's ears!

Was the old two-man show on 7 days a week? Did they not broadcast on the weekends?

Oh I fully believe that he doesn't have any, but the segment didn't help sway any of the "DJ is dumb" guys.

All of a sudden Ginella is promoting a value list.

There we have it, folks. The power of posts on GolfWrx bringing about a positive change in programming on MD.

I suspect GolfWrx is even more powerful in bringing about change than we believe.

(Or maybe member RDD showed this thread to the producers of MD.)

LOL, easy there Norma Rae.

If posts on this site were powerful the entire Morning Drive set and CBS/NBC/ESPN broadcast booths would be empty - 95%+ of the content on here about anything having to do with GC or the networks is overwhelmingly negative.

Oh, and good MD today! And I'm listening to Gary McCord and wishing I could reach the remote.
