Interesting insert on his driver- I am guessing that is strictly for Swingweight purposes??

Per a Callaway insider on another site it is to help with his problem shot, not for SW purpose.. In the past they put hot melt in the heel but couldn't get enough weight. Interestingly they didn't specify whether it was a slice or hook that it was trying to correct..had a friend who put lead powder down a shaft to add more draw bias..

Given the location of the weight, it would encourage more draw bias/prevent against a slice.

Compared to the last few PM-grind 60's Phil has had in his bag the 2.0 looks virtually identical in shape and grind. My guess is it's an updated version with the MD4 Grooves.

It lessens the need for the huge amounts of lead tape he used to put on his driver.

Just replaced my 56 & 60 2016 PM Grind Satin Wedges with new ones in black. I wouldn't hit any other wedge!

Wouldn't you think that heel weight in the driver would make it a hook monster (assuming of course there isn't 17lbs of hotmelt in the toe). Just feel like using hotmelt to jack with the weight would be the more efficient way than a huge looking heel weight.

Interesting he went back to the CB/MB split set from all MBs.

Beautiful irons..ALL of them.

Phil has played all CBs for years. Since the 2013 X Forged cane out he gamed them exclusively with the exception of a week or two of experimentation here or there until switching this year to the combo of the new model

I've got my GBB slide weight all the way on hook and still cant get the draw I want. That weight would be a godsend. Either that or switching over to a Rogue Draw head.

Is that 4 different models of irons into one wild combo set?

I guess if we want to count the UT it is lol. He usually plays hybrid instead.

He didn't have the UT in his winning bag in Mexico. It's a specialty based on course condition.

I'd really only say it's a 3 model combo set 4-pw

So he’s got a 19 hybrid and a 18 iron?

Why "Mack daddy"?

Ruins it for me

IIRC, Phil was testing wedges a few years back - I think the early prototypes of the X-forged model - and was handed one model that had prototype grooves. When he hit it, he said “THAT’S the Mack Daddy!!” When the wedge was released, they offered it with the “Mack daddy” grooves. They’ve since transitioned the name to the entire wedge line.

Yep. As the story goes he was hitting something like a 40 yard pitch shot and managed to back it up like 10ft with the old grooves. Needless to say he was impressed.

IIRC from watching his short game DVD, he hits down quite aggressively on flop shots which means he needs more bounce to control the amount of digging. Also, the PM grind has the effect of making the wedge interact with the turf in a manner similar to a wedge with less bounce and a more conventional grind.

Why would he have 10* bounce on his lob wedge instead of something like 4*? Or is the bounce not really 10* because he has had it altered in some way.

Need to remember that static bounce and dynamic bounce are two different things.

Would you mind explaining that. I've never heard of those two difference bounces.

There’s static bounce...which is simply the measurement of bounce

Effective bounce is the bounce when camber, sole width, grind, etc are taken into account.

Easiest example is Vokey’s L Grind, static bounce is somewhere in the high teens/low twenties (depending on who you ask). Effective bounce is 4!

I’ve always heard the Phil’s NDMC are a mold made just for him. If true, does anyone know what makes them different?

Yes that is true. I can’t remember the exact story but when we were at the ECPC one of the guys explained that Phil likes his grips built up a certain way to take a little of the taper out of them but not all of it. They use to just do the extra layers of tape method but Phil said they never came out exactly the same so they had Golf Pride make a boat load of molds specifically for him. It’s in a big drawer marked “Phil Only” and it’s filled with grips, single iron heads, hybrid heads, etc. each item in the drawer is weighed down to a fraction of a gram to make sure everything is how Phil expects it.

Great info, thanks!
