Caddies at Pebble- can you not have a single?

I was just told by the reservation representative that a single caddy per player is not available. I was not told that 6 months ago when I made my reservation. Is this correct in that you must share a caddy with another player? The web site shows rates and expected gratuity for a single bag. Not a deal breaker for some reason I am not crazy about a caddy running between players?

Thank You for any comments!

Hey, while i cannot tell you about Pebble exactly, I used to caddie at the Ocean Course on Kiawah. We did not allow single bag carry unless we had too many caddies that day and some would get sent home with no loop, or you were willing to pay for a double bag. There are 2 reasons: 1 is that those caddies are going to be out there for 5 hours, plus wait a couple hours for that loop. 7 hours of manual labor for a single bag rate is not going to entice people to loop as a profession. 2 is the cadddymaster plans how many loopers will be needed each day based on 2 caddies per foursome. If they allowed ppl to take 1 they would be out of caddies by 11am. If you offer to pay for a double bag rate they may accommodate.

I do have a buddy who caddies out there. I can vouch that they have some really good loopers, and he is a really good player too. Not your evans scholorship high school kid that we see in the midwest alot...

Hope that helps and enjoy the golf!

What are caddy rates at the Ocean course like? Everywhere we went in Scotland, it was one pro jock per bag and it was something like 50 quid + tip.

Sharing a caddie seems like sharing a cart. It's nice you you both hit to the same part of the course, but if one is left and the other is right no wonder a round would take 5+ hours.

Not really, because the caddy is usually already in the landing area that you're hitting into. They can pretty easily get bags and clubs positioned before you get to your ball.

Am I missing something? People carry two bags?

Double bags are standard almost everywhere AFAIK.

For the most part it’s not what you see on TV. Caddie hands a club on the green and heads to the fairway/landing area to forecaddie. Keeps things moving. If one goes right and One left, he’ll drop one bag off and go to the other. From there, depends on who plays first, will give One yardage while attending to the other player. It really works out quite well. Caddies will also work together if needed to swap bags or get a yardage, etc.

I played Pebble 7/1 and can absolutely attest that single caddies are available. The only difference is that the gratuity isn’t split between the two players. When I put in my caddie request I asked for a single bag caddie and they had no issue with it. The only thing that I could think of is they’re incredibly busy and don’t have the number of caddies to do a single on the day you’re playing? Otherwise it shouldn’t be an issue and the cards they give out with instructions on caddie fees and gratuities have info for single bag caddies. I just think most caddies prefer to double bag because they make more $

They usually have single caddies available and two of the best caddies are Robert "Rocket" Lytle and (I think that he's been at Pebble slightly longer than Casey) and Casey Boyns. Casey has caddied at Pebble for more than 30 years, Two time California State Amateur Champion at Pebble Beach, caddied I 30+ Crosby / ATT Pebble Pro-Ams and played in two, California Golf Hall Of Fame

I played Pebble and Spyglass last weekend and one of the days my twosome played with two singles. One single drove a cart, and the other walked with his own caddie. We had our own caddie and we also got a cart because our caddie had a sore back. The caddie drove the cart while we walked and we used the cart between some of the more uphill longer holes.

Caddies at the PB resort courses are $92 per player plus the tip. What newg33b said is true - the caddies prefer to double bag because of the money.

From the caddie services website:

RECOMMENDED AVERAGE GRATUITIES

(Gratuities can be higher or lower than the average and should be based on the level of service provided by the caddie)

  • Double Caddie – $35 to $60 per bag
  • Single Caddie – $45 to $70 per bag
  • Forecaddie – $25 to $40 per bag

For sure use a caddie. We got a really good one the first day and a so-so one the second. A good one will save you several strokes. I'll PM you the contact info for the good one. He was recommended by another WRX'r and he made the experience even more memorable.

I played last year in April. Booked my round as a non resort staying single. No problem having a caddie to myself.

It was awesome.
