MD/DC/VA Golfers - Twelve Monkeys Mental Divergence

One new feature worth mentioning: 19th hole posts -including ones in here - now make the thread populate in the "Recent Discussions" link, which I assume is taking the place of the old "New Content" tab.

Like our actual post counts, we are no longer semi-hidden.

This may not necessarily be a good thing.

I’m just happy several other losers have more posts than me, making them slightly bigger losers, though probably not as big of jerks still.

Forum needs some tweaks but it’s a step up.  No one but the geeks seemed to care, but the old site was hosted in such a way that your password could be hijacked (not encrypted).  It was the only site I visit that didn’t use https.  Maybe the only site I’ve regularly visited in the last 3 years that didn’t use it.  If any of you used the same password for WRX as for other things, you should change all your passwords.

When you guys write a post, does it give almost two lines of spacing as default in the text box (Chrome)? My text box still looks weird when I'm writing posts but when I submit it - it goes back to "normal vertical spacing" between lines.

I do think you can tell by reading the comments guys who have been involved in large scale projects or software rollouts in the past. When you're rolling a forum like this over to a new platform with 15 years worth of posts/data/tables etc, nothing is as easy as "WHY DIDNT YOU TEST THIS". I think the forums went live around 1p yesterday and the pitchforks were out at 1:05p. Minor stuff I can see already being fixed since yesterday.

I know we do have SW guys/testers on here, if you find bugs, please do put them in that thread, everything is being tracked.

Seems like a good day to go on vacation for two weeks and test out the mobile site...

I don't hate the new site.

I have kind of a hard time parsing it all with my eyes at a glance, but that's just something that will take some getting used to.

Little bit of golf yesterday. 18 with PQ, then squeezed in another 9. We're NOT doing the new 2 stroke drop at the club this year (local rule). I disagree with this decision pretty strongly. Didn't like the logic from the pro. His argument seems to be that if he hits one near OB and I hit one OB, then I have an "advantage" by being able to bring the ball all the way back to the fairway. I see that on the surface, but you can't just lay that argument out in a vacuum. I'm also taking 2 strokes to do it and the ALTERNATIVE is me going back to the tee.

I really consider this rule change to be an alternative to going back to the tee, not an alternative to hitting a provisional. Whatever.

Wait his argument is that you have an advantage by hitting your 4th from the fairway over him hitting 2 from near OB?

(clicks LOL button)

I guess I'd have to see a hole layout where this argument makes sense.

Basically. He's like, "so, I'm over near OB and you get to throw one 20 yards over into the fairway." I didn't argue with him. I emailed a guy at the club about it and he gave me a cryptic "stay tuned".

When I first logged on yesterday afternoon, the site was kind of rough to use.  The font color seemed light...like a gray on white background which made it tough for my aging eyes.  Font color is back to black so it is easier to read now.  It will take a while to get used to the new layout but that's to be expected.

I remember when they did a similar change years ago...nobody liked it at first I want to say.  But everybody got used to it and moved on.

And DC, I'm getting the double spaced deal when I type a reply too.  I'm using Firefox.

"Must have a set of dope bladez" is one of the standard phases in the development of a junior golfer.  I wore out the sweet spot on a set of MP-33s back in the day.  Or I wore out the sweet spot vicinity, at least :).  Then I moved back to CBs.  My irons are getting bigger as time goes on.  I'll be rocking full SGI shovels within 5-10 years.

My bad wrist has been particularly bad lately, seemingly for no real reason.  I've been keeping the sticks put away, but have a doc appt next week, so I figured might as well get out and start taking cuts.  I went to see my buddy for a preseason tuneup lesson, just to make sure I get the year started in a good direction.

He fired up the Trackman and had me hit a series of shots, while he watched.  Nothing shocking about the numbers.  My swing direction was about 4-5 degrees left.  I either held the face off just enough (rare) to hit a little wipey fade, or slammed that puppy closed (most of the time) and hit a pull draw.

We put an alignment stick in the ground about 15ft in front of me, to help visualize start line, then the first thing he had me do was add just a little right side bend at address.  My shoulders were  way too leveled out, and a bit open.  Adding a little bend immediately brought the swing direction back to 0-1 degree right.  I was able to start the ball right of the stick and draw it in, which I couldn't do before.  Launch came up nicely as well.

The second thing was to clean up my pivot a bit.  I was moving off the ball too much, which got my torso too far behind the ball, and pressure to the outside of my right foot.  It made me have to lunge forward at it coming down.  He just wanted me to keep my head from moving to the right going back.  That cleaned up the contact big time.  Low point moved forward straight away, and even though it felt like it was going to make me drive the club straight into the ground, it actually helped me shallow it a bit.  Definitely a less jarring impact, which is great for my suspect joints.

We took a quick look at putting setup before calling it a day.  We made a minor adjustment, to hopefully make things a little simpler for me.

It felt like a very productive session, especially since I've totally neglected my golf game since the turkey shoot.  Low point improved.  Contact improved.  Start direction improved.  Launch improved.  The left miss will continue to creep in, until I can really adjust to not having to throw the face shut as much.

Hopefully nothing more than a cortisone shot at worst from the hand doc next week.  I'm ready to get back into golfing the ball.

So by right side bend, you mean a little tilt, lowering your right shoulder a bit?

Sounds awesome.

Serious question, although I already know the answer. Have you ever thought about testing out graphite shafts in your irons?

Think of crunching your torso towards your right hip - that's right side bend.  It does lower the right shoulder a bit, yes.  He was happy with the rest of my body positioning at setup, so for me, that was the way to get that little tilt.  He didn't want me shifting the hips or any using any other mechanism to add tilt.

I've been playing Recoil 110F4 in my irons since I had the tear in my wrist 4 years ago.  I've had two very brief "could I play steel again?" experiments, but have been in the Recoils otherwise.  Big difference in terms of the way I feel after hitting balls/playing golf between steel and graphite.  I'll never go back to steel in my irons.  Wedges are steel, but I'm sure I could put graphite in those and be happy if I wanted.

Apps are the present and future in this day and age of everyone being glued to their phone.  It would only make sense to cater to an app over a web browser.  But I guess I'm not shocked.
I guess the argument is that instead of websites every "site" should have an app instead?

If every website I visited had their own app instead - I would have hundreds of apps on my phone.

If a mobile site is done well, it should be fast and efficient and almost indistinguishable from a separate app.

Not even apples to apples comparison because on those hundreds of sites you visit daily, they are not all message forums.  And you are obviously an elite internetter if you go to that many sites regularly.  This site is more interactive than most "browsing" websites.  I get there is tapatalk and stuff like that.  But it's super convenient being able to tap the app and bring everything up.  Not saying you need to agree with me, but you're super dismissive of apps having a purpose for a website such as this one.

edit: also, an app is just an alternative to going to the browser.  I'm not advocating getting rid of it, just have both as options.
