I caught up on a couple other movies/shows over the last week.

Bad Boys 3. Rating 2.5/5. Was at least 4 years too late, seemed tired and forced. I loved the first two, this one sucked. Save your money.

Uncut Gems. Rating 4.5/5. Completely taken by surprise, I had zero expectations for this, very very good IMO. If you've ever bet on sports, it brings a whole new level of anxiety to the movie. I was exhausted by the end. Took me by surprise how much I liked it.

Zero Zero Zero on Amazon. Through 7/8 episodes. Rating 4.75/5. Gabriel Byrne has a cup of coffee in it but otherwise, no actors you've ever heard of.

I will watch every minute of the Jordan doc, the Bulls/Celtics playoff series in 86 was really the first time I got into basketball as a kid. Jordan dropped 60 in Game 2, no one had really seen anything like it before.

Uncut Gems is really good. Loved Sandler in it. Loved KG. It's just so stressful to watch.

The Safdie brothers have a movie on Flix right now called "Good Time" that is pretty good. Also makes you uneasy.

until recently i haven't watched that much TV during the corona thing. I found that we temporarily have HBO on demand so I ripped through 8 episodes of the wire in 5 days. I watched the Jordan doc. I'll enjoy it. By far my favorite thing is watching the amount of scotch in MJs glass change and try to figure out the total number of glasses, order of the questions, etc. like at the start his glass didn't have much. but later his glass is like full. also he says that he didn't smoke, do lines, or drink at the time. LOLz. MJ LOVE the scotch.

 

As a family we watched the house with clocks in the walls. Mediocre movie. It freaked me out. I don't like that type of stuff. My 7 and 8 year old were fine with it though. LOLZ.

 

I am 11 out of 10 excited for the NFL draft. The highlight clips and ticker and all better be full production value though!

My dad played golf with Michael Jordan somewhere in California in the late 80s/early 90s. He has a framed picture of the two of them standing next to a green. It was hanging on the wall of the house we lived in growing up.

 

Playing golf with Michael Jordan is better than playing golf with all but maybe 3 professional golfers.

Watching the Jordan thing yesterday with my basketball crazy kids was pretty cool. They were shocked that I cared about something other than golf.

Stayed up late explaining Rodman, Pippen etc.

I think you'd get good value playing with Phil. He seems like the type of guy who always gets paid for his time, and the second his contractual obligation is over, he's gone, but it'd probably be fine?

 

I don't know. I've never daydreamed about playing golf with anyone famous. If someone said you can play Augusta with Jack and Tiger and Michael Jordan or 3 of your friends, I would take friends every time.

The Jordan doc was riveting. What I really wanted was 5 minutes of him showing me his house in Jupiter - or wherever it is. Neither my wife nor I even watch the NBA anymore but we watched them both and immediately wished we could have binged the rest.

The reverence that Larry Bird talked about Jordan with is really telling. Bird really is sort of a hermit, doesn't do a ton of interviews and really was never huge on outwardly praising guys - especially when he went to the Pacers. But you could tell how in awe they were of him in the 86 playoffs. GD that 86 Celtics team was incredible too. Four hall of famers in the starting lineup - and the 5th was Danny Ainge.

That montage with LL Cool Js "Im Bad" was fantastic. Its probably been 20 years since I've heard that song and still knew every word.

I have to wonder what the other 8 hours are going to cover though.

i can play with my friends all the time. golf courses don't have THAT much impact on the day. Obviously playing Augusta would be a cool experience but no where near as cool an experience as playing with Tiger. I'm pretty good at asking questions. I'd get him to talk about stuff. Nerdy golf stuff like how does he pick his wedge traj for each shot. and other stuff. i could ask the questions in a way that gets him to open up a little. there is some stuff he'd talk about. i don't really need to know about the 2009 stuff. just more what it's like to walk in his shoes. like i'd love to know the difference between annoying reporters and guys he trusts. etc. You're really turning down the chance to pick his brain for four hours for a chance to play golf with the guys you already play golf with? I can play turf with city and Fabb.

Augusta with friends. I think playing with Tiger would be awkward. I'd rather just walk a round inside the ropes and watch Tiger than try to play my game. I also doubt Tiger is going to turn on the charm for one of us commoners.

Here's another thought. Let's say you play Augusta with 3 of your BFFs instead of Timbers with Tiger. You can reminisce and talk about Augusta with your BFFs for the rest of your life. Tiger is not giving you his cell number to call him up and chat about that 8 footer you made to save par at Timbers.

Tiger is going to stonewall you and anything you get out of him is going to be what he's already put in a book or a youtube video. And he still only offers one perspective.

Playing Augusta. . .you're not just "playing Augusta". You're getting to play an Alistair Mackenzie design, full of risk and reward over seriously rolling landscape, giving you a template to compare every golf course you play after that to the holes are at Augusta. On top of that, you're playing with a mental map giving you the option to compare all your shots to the shots you've watched pros hit for years.

And, you get to hang out with your friends. I'm getting LOADED at Augusta. I'm definitely taking a leak on the course in 3/4 places. I'm trying the chip from over the green on 16.

ok let me ask a question. WHY should I care that Augusta is an alistair mckenzie? I'm not anti-architecture or anything like that. it's just not a part of the game that i care about. i basically like the personal challenge, the camaraderie, and i really like being outside.

 

I wonder if my lack of appreciation of courses is in any way related to being colorblind. My wife and I used to go down to the Shenandoah every fall. She loved the natural beauty. After a couple of years we both came to realize that i literally couldn't experience it like other people. Of course i don't have the same appreciation for the beauty of the Shenandoah in the fall. That's different from nerdy golf course architecture but there could be a connection. I don't look up and appreciate my surroundings nearly as much as most golfers. Perhaps that lack of observation creeps into a lack of appreciation for design.

I can also call you to discuss the 4 footer I missed for bogey on #7 or the weak pull fade I hit on #11. The options are unlimited.

You don't need to care about Mackenzie as if he should be worshipped de facto. But, when you get over a shot and can see all the options arrayed in front of you, or you finish a hole and think, "Oh, I could have played this a different way".

In 2019, 4 of the final 6 players on hole 12 hit a ball in the water. They were all hitting 9 irons. On a shot to a green they've all hit hundreds of shots to before You're telling me you don't want to get over that shot and try to hit it.

Augusta, as much as anything else, seems like a FUN course to play.

I'd go a step further and say that I'd rather play Augusta by myself than play Timbers with Tiger. Playing it with friends is just a bonus.

My only problem with Augusta is that it's like overdosing on drugs and that near-death experience scares you straight - playing normal courses would never be the same again.
