I'd like to think that if I'm Koepka I'm able to process, "sometimes balls go into crowds and this one was just unlucky".

 

I'd feel bad if I made a play like, "I'm intentionally going to fire this into the crowd because I like the drop area", but balls go into crowds all the time. And hey, he gave her a signed glove, so what is she complaining about?

 

She's suing, the article said. Presumably, there's something on her ticket like, "the buyer assumes risk of getting hit with balls", but I never know how binding those "sign away your rights" things are.

Lots of stuff in the postmortems about the US Ryder Cup team selection and such being broken.

 

It's basically the same system as the European team though, right? 8 auto qualify, and 4 captains picks. Timeline for those things is pretty similar as well, I think. But the US doesn't get the players that are hot enough, or good enough fit for the course, or whatever other excuse.

 

I hope the euros have as much fun making jokes about the inevitable US task force assembly this time as they did after 2014.

 

Is Phil actually showing up to the tournament this week? I bet he's so jazzed to be there. O/U on him being dead last when they make the cut?

Phil was a bad pick, but he's Phil Mickelson. There's no way he was left off when there's any sort of justification for leaving him on. He was 10th in Ryder Cup points, so there's your justification.

 

The only system tweak I'd like to see is a change to the way points are allocated for automatic qualifying. There's zero reason why Bubba's February 2018 win, or Spieth's February 2017 win, count for so much. Those two should have been in serious danger of missing the automatic spot. I'd put in some sort of decay where points earned recently count for more. Maybe H1 of 2017 counts for 1/4 point, H2 2017 is 1/2 point, H1 2018 is 3/4 point, and H2 2018 is 1 point.

 

I think we could use an analytical captain as well. The Euros apparently use data analysis (strokes gained, etc) to figure out who will pair well together. Along with personalities, that informs their teams. Again, pointing to Phil, there's no way a guy that's 150th in SG Off-The-Tee (with negative SG!) and 2nd to last in driving accuracy should be playing 4somes on that course.

the inability to separate results from process is truly amazing to me. there is very little about the US process that needs to change. They should've given more thought to the day one foursome pairings. that's about it. literally the only case you can make for a different captains pick is to say "we're going to select and inferior and less deserving player because they suit this course better". i'm not really sure i'd even be in favor of that. if you earn it you earn it

The young players are too insecure to be away from their friends. The Euros don't have that problem. Heck, they fly across the pond by themselves to play golf for a living.
