Question: Can the naked (albeit trained) eye (PGA-certified pro) identify enough shaft deflection from watching 8 swings that he is rightfully recommending moving me from stiff to an X in my driver? All my studio fittings have always put me in stiff, but I suppose my swing has changed enough in the last couple months that it is possible I need to reconsider stiff.

It's not all about shaft deflection...it's about tempo, transition, how much you put the shaft thru, and dispersion. They should be able to see that.

That sounds like complete mumbo jumbo to me.

 

If you have a driver with an adjustable shaft, probably can't hurt to try out a stiff shaft for awhile and see if it's better or worse for you.

 

Just for clarity, he suggested moving from an S to an X.

It's not all about shaft deflection...it's about tempo, transition, how much you put the shaft thru, and dispersion. They should be able to see that.

 

Dispersion was perfect. 4 left, 2 hit, 4 right.

i always thought getting a player in their "proper flex" is more about the aggressiveness of player's transition and the shaft's weight has more influence on the player's feel. not to mention that shaft profiles can be soft/mid/firm tip, soft/mid/firm middle, soft/mid/firm butt. mmmm, firm butt...

 

tex would probably have a better answer than me on this.

 

as for whether or not a PGA pro can see what you need in 8 swings... well, it depends on the pro, and if you trust them. good excuse to buy more golf gear, i say!

I keep debating a new driver. Really consistent with my 913D3 set to 9.25 with the 70 S Phenom but its a little lower trajectory than I prefer. The again if it finds the fairway why change.

i randomly bought some ping ie1s to replace my callaway x-20 tours. between ~2008 and ~2015 there were significant technology upgrades. The Pings are more forgiving, the long irons launch higher, and throughout the set they go farther. LOVE the Pings.

that would be a good huck from the trails to reach the ocean. IIRC, 15 and 18 are pretty tough on that course.

3 putted 15. Was near the green in 2 on 16, and my pitch took off like a rocket when it hit the green, and rolled through into a bunker. Right in front of crazy lip to short sided pin. All world save for 5. Hit an absolute perfect 5 iron on 17. Unfortunately 5 turned out to be the wrong club. I was over the green on the sand walking path. 18 I drove it into a fairway bunker that was like quicksand. Feet were twisting and burying deeper into the sand as I was swinging. Still got it near the green, but couldn't save the par.

 

We had an all world weather day yesterday for Pacific Dunes and Bandon Trails. This place is unbelievable.

 

We're getting taken to pound town by wind and rain today for Old Macdonald and Bandon Dunes. It's going to be very interesting.

I just got an email from North Berwick confirming my tee time for next July! I just paid my deposit, too. So pumped. Now I'm just awaiting my Cruden Bay confirmation (was told back in July that they'd confirm in October) and TOC private single tee time lottery notice/rejection letter.

 

Will figure out trying to plan Carnoustie and Kingsbarns after I hear back about TOC, which should be on 10/15.

Very nice. Swapped out the stock shaft for something a little heavier and the thing is a rocket. I'm playing the 4+, but it plays like a regular 3w, distance wise, with a little higher traj. Low spinning, workable, forgiving. The total package.
