Budget irons for a single handicaper

Recommended Posts

I have been playing the MP69s for about 3 years now. The irons are pretty good when I’m playing well but are not the most forgiving irons.

After having a daughter 3 weeks ago I’m in need of a set of irons in the 250-300 range that are a little easier to play but still offer SOME workability. They also need to have that players iron look at address.

Any suggestions?

Two at the top of my list would be MP64 and Srixon Z745. Usually can find with S300 pretty cheap.

Following this for sure. I’m not a single handicapper (10-12 probably) but I’m looking for more of a “players” iron - right now I have something that is too much of a game improvement iron.

The Wilson FG F5s are currently at the top of my list.

What are you gaming now?

TSR3 9.0 / Ventus TR Black 6S

G430 Max 15 / PING Tour Black 2.0 75S

Epic Max 18 / MMT 70X

U505 22 / HZRDUS RDX 6.0 80Hy

i230 6-P / Modus 115S

Take a look at MP 60s. I don't know if you can find anything in good condition since they were released a while ago, but those are great irons with feel and forgiveness and the players look at address you're looking for.

If you want something newer, consider MP 25s. I've heard there are some really good deals to be had online on those irons, but haven't looked into it myself.

Srixon forged, definitely. Mine are the older i-506's (I think?) and they can be had dirt cheap. I LOVE them.

I have a set of really nice Wilson Pi5's with S300's I can let go for $100 shipped. They have maybe 12 rounds on them. They are 2* upright with Tacki Mac grips (kind of like NDMC).

Anyone have any experience with the maltby irons? Like mmb and dmb

The TE/DBM are fantastic to play and are really forgiving for a "players" iron. The TE (chrome) is a little softer making them more bendable for loft/lie and the DBM is a little firmer but not hard by any means. The DBM finish has held up wonderful for me for several seasons use. I tried Ping I200's last season and I500's this season but prefer my DBM's. They can't be beat especially for the price and the fact you can pick any shaft, grip, etc. makes them a no brainer purchase.

I play the c taper 130x in my mp69. Do you think that shaft would fit well with the DBM? It’s a low flight shaft so having a head that’s easier to get the ball in the air is a must in my opinion.

Yes that would be a good fit. I play S300 and don't have a problem getting the 5 iron airborne.

I still have my MP-60 in excellent condition. They were replaced with my JPX 900T but I will never get rid of them.

I just got a 3-PW of Cobra Fly Z+ for a little under $300. They look great and offer some workability. The going rate on the Bay is right around there if you do some digging.

... These are in my Hall Of Fame for irons. I played the AP2's and really liked them but the feel was missing. Enter Amp Forged with a thinner topline and much better feel. They were replace by Fly Z+ irons of course and now the Forged Tours. I think they are the most under appreciated irons of all time. Anyone that has played them just rave about them. But so few have played them. I have had all 3 versions and other than cosmetics they play virtually identical. Workable if you have the skill and very forgiving for their size and shape.

Driver:       TM Qi10 ... AutoFlex Dream 7 SF405
Fairway:    TM Qi10 5 wood ... Kai'li Blue 60R
Hybrids:    Ping G430 22* ... Alta CB Black 70r
                  TM Dhy #4 ... Diamana LTD 65r

Irons:         Titleist T200 '23 5-Pw ... Steelfiber i95r
Wedges:    Vokey 50*/54*/58* ... Steelfiber i95r
Putter:       Cobra King Sport-60
Ball:           2024 TP5x/2023 Maxfli Tour

Your handicap and your comment make my purchase feel even better! I watched some reviews videos and even though the reviewers aren't Cobra players, you could tell they would think about gaming those irons.

OP, Cleveland 588s were close to the top of my list as well, but I just liked the Cobras a little bit better. The TTs were getting rave reviews when they came out. You seem to have plenty of options now, so I'll stop giving more to you.
