bad side effect of having blowout sales... People think $40 MSRP is so much expensive and will wait for the sale to drop again.

100% truth. It’s a bit like Bed, bath, and beyond. Does ANYONE actually shop there without a 20% off coupon??

The only reason I even discovered the XV and love it is the $9.95 6 ball trial packs.

I’ve got 20 dozen in the closet at $20 a dozen. I would NEVER Pay $40 a dozen....for any ball...ever.

Interesting take from a former teaching pro, professional fitter and clubmaker.

Why is that? Because I’m frugal? I’m not understanding the criticism.

There are plenty of great balls available for under $30 a dozen at any given time. Sales, Last years models, “trial packs”. No one should EVER have to pay full price on golf balls unless they simply dont care. I care. I like my money in my pocket or paying for rounds of golf.

Paying Titleist, Taylor, and Callaway $40+ a dozen is complete insanity in my book.

Paying Titleist, Taylor, and Callaway $40+ a dozen is complete insanity in my book.

Not really criticism per se but, as I've pointed out a number of times around here, one OFTEN pays (well ?) over $40 per round to play and many of us, especially a pro, can easily play a full round with a single ball;. And as durable as even the highest priced balls are nowadays, sans hitting trees or cart paths, often times 2-3 rounds with one ball.

Add in the cost per round) of your shoes, clothing and the difference in price in the golf ball, perhaps the most important of your equipment, should be the least of your worries.

Some (many ? most ?) accomplished players, pros, instructors, etc. would cite the ball as the single most important piece of equipment a golfer uses.

The cost of a $30/doz ball and the Prov1 is $1.50 per (less if you play multiple rounds with the one ball of course). So, for what amounts to about $1-2 per round, I find it surprising that someone as accomplished as yourself would consider sacrificing your potential best game for what is a relatively piddly amount.

Now, if that $30 ball IS the best for your game then by all means,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, but if not it seems, as our cross-Atlantic cousins might say, "pennywise and pound foolish".

Just one person's opinion. :)

You are the man!

I often have issues with adding items to the cart on Golf Galaxy's website, so I went with Dick's.

7 XV performance packs @ $10 per pack = 70

Applied code DMFCB19MNGOLF for 15% off since they're technically regular priced items

Free shipping

$59.50 for 3-and-a-half dozen = $17 a dozen

Score!

You guys are making me want to try Srixon again. I've been a fan since way back in the Hi-Brid Tour and Hi-Spin days, but I tried a dozen last year and found them very blah. I think they may have been leftover 2016s because they didn't impress me at all and even the yellow color seemed dull.

Do you guys think there's any noticeable difference between the 2017 and 2019s Z Star? I prefer as soft a feel as possible so I don't like that the 2019 Z Star compression went up a couple points.

I can only speak for the XV, but it does feel softer. They lowered the compression ever so slightly in the XV which I am sure helped a little, but I don't know if the new SERM cover plays into the softer sound/feel as well.

XV is definitely softer as other have said, but the regualr Z-star is amazingly soft - I was really surprised how much softer than last generation it felt off the putter, wedge bouncing it, and hitting some pitches. Given the compression went up 2, I’m not sure what sorcery they unleashed on it. I’m looking forward to a full test tomorrow on my GC2.

I messed around with the balls on my GC2 in my house today.

Putter feel:

19zstar - super soft, approaching chrome soft

17zstar - fairly soft

19xv - getting close to 17zstar, but still an X ball

17xv - firmest off putter, but not displeasing

Some 40-50 yard (year old RTX 2.0 58) pitches:

Ws2y6ie.png

With these pitch shots, the 19zstar feels similar to the 17zstar so the softness difference off putter is either gone or very close. The XVs also feel similar here to each other. I tried to pull representative shots, but if I wanted to I could hit a 7000+ RPM pitch shot with any of them so I just tried to stay smooth.

Some 8-iron (J15 CB) shots:

1NSnvBk.png

I'm not a range guy and my swing gets out of whack hitting repeatedly. By the end of the 8-irons, I was struggling, but pulled together some similar shots. I could play any of these and any distance difference between balls was down to the swing and not the ball. I didn't notice anything other than feel differences.

Hopefully I'll be able to compare drivers outside soon, but I'm struggling with casting my driver if I hit more than about 5-6 in a row inside.

Thank you for the review. I believe its whatever ball you feel best standing over whether based off of feel or visual or 'mental'. Mentally I love the XV feel wise I prefer the 19 z star. Got 2 dozen Z's and 4 dozen XV 19's. Guess i'll play the 90 compression during the cool weather days and the XV's this summer. Kinda wishing I would have just made the complete switch to the Z's as it feels and performs wonderfully. Great job!

I played the 19xv today. Ive been playing the 2015zstar over the winter. The xv launches high and may feel slightly softer than last years xv. The 19 xv just goes straight. I hit draws and fades but it just goes straight. It will take some adjusting as Im used to working the ball more but should be fine. Iron feel was good, full wedges rolled out 2 feet or so. Good ball!

Well I guess Golfwrx bought up all of DSG's and GG's stock... Performance packs don't show up anymore after going so far as having some in my cart day before yesterday.

Or Srixon got wind of this and put a stop to it.

I loaded up last night. Glad I did, my friend tried to get them this morning and they were sold out everywhere.

But, the 17’ version is the best ball I’ve played and I have no idea how these could be better. Don’t want more spin or a softer feel. We’’ll see.

So tried the new XV and here my thoughts.

Driver - nice flight , maybe a yard or two shorter than 2017

Irons - softer feel but not mushy - feels similar to 2017 Z-star

Wedges - spins more than 2017 -again spin is now more like a z-star on 1/2 shots

Putter - little less click than 2017

Durability - not bullet proof like previous generations. Not bad but the ball is now average on the durability scale . Guess they had to sacrifice something to get more spin and softer feel.

Lastly this ball seems more Z-star than I expected but not in a bad way. I am really enjoying this ball.

** Ball reminds me of the Tour Plats but that is just a personal assessment.

Yeah, awesome deal and know a couple people that took advantage of it. Seems to defeat the purpose and probably should be limited to in store purchases and limited quantities.

Just got a sleeve last weekend to try it out. Hit 3 of the new gen then 3 of the previous gen while chipping and putting in the house. Definitely softer feel compared to the previous gen. Can't wait to try them on the course. My supply of k-sigs is almost done (LOL) so I'll probably be playing either the new xv or avx this year.
