2019 Phoenix Area Course Conditions

I just played GCU on Saturday and the course is in great shape. Some bare grass areas in the rough as usual but tees, fairways, and greens are darn near perfect.

Biltmore Adobe is an incredibly boring, easy, unmemorable course that is insanely overpriced due to its location. The rack rate is like $200 right now which is NUTS. It's a $50 course at best. I don't understand who in their right mind would pay $200 or even $100 to play it unless their corporate expense account is picking up the tab or something. It has to be the worst value in Phoenix golf right behind their own Biltmore Links course, and then probably Kierland. If you want an old, flat, unmemorable course go play Encanto for like $40. At least Encanto will let you walk it. Don't get me wrong, I like Encanto, but it is at the right price point for what it is. Nobody would pay $100 or $200 to play Encanto, why do the same at Adobe?

Thanks Cherokee! Looking for a sub $100 round for next Friday. Any suggestions?

Thinking we're going to play Estrella Sunday of WMO before flying back home.

Why the universal hate for McCormick? Tough to get a tee time under $100 or so this Sunday and playing Pine there with my boss. Think it’s $59 or 69?

Scruffy conditions, and infamous for 5+ hour rounds. I've only played the Palm course there, but it felt like a course they took out of Florida and plopped down in Scottsdale, sort of unnatural. Lots of water hazards. Lots of goose poop. They price it cheap for the area it is in, and then pack it to the gills with players.

Wigwam Gold and Blue are in very good shape. Gold is a great layout and Blue is very fun. Red is in decent shape and a pretty solid track.

I agree. I think many people dismiss the Blue course based on the yardage on the scorecard, but to me it doesn't feel like it plays short. Good variety of holes, and the greens require you to think on your approach shots. Red course has some weaker holes IMO but is still a solid layout usually in decent condition as you mention besides some of the bunkers, I'd put it at above average overall for the west valley especially compared to the "value" courses. Gold just doesn't set up for my game for whatever reason but it is still a course I'd recommend to others easily.

Well, I’m playing the Links course on Wednesday :). Corporate event, I’m not paying. Mostly a “hit a shot, drink some more beer” kind of round.

Playing Raven tomorrow afternoon after flight arrivies at noon, then Wekopa on Sunday morning. Those I’m paying for.

I’m honestly not sure which of their courses are worse but they’re absolutely two of the worst courses I’ve ever played period. When you add in costs they might be at the very top.

Raven is good though just not a course typical of the area. We Ko Pa will be good.

Hopefully he is playing saguaro. I’m not sure if I’d play either Biltmore course again for free. $200 for Biltmore may be the worst value in America

Here are some of the delights that await you at the Links. A par 3, one of the worst I have ever played. If the first three players in the scramble do not make the green, consider chipping one down the cartpath. The tee box is jammed in a corner right up against a 3-4 story high fence that runs along the entire left side of the hole and behind the green. Later on, a par 4 where a good play to the fairway off the tee is directly over the back yard of a house that juts out in front of the tee. Just don't hit a pop-up like I did and land in the yard.

Oh boy - guess we are in for a day. Good thing we have 36 at Grayhawk lined up tomorrow to ease us into AZ golf!

Wow...something tells me we’ll be doing more drinking and less swinging than I thought. Cigars, anyone??

My office is on the edge of #13 and 14 on the links course... The only redeeming quality about it right now is that it is in fantastic condition. I mean really nice. So crappy layout on great grass... Better than nothing.

Played Aguila today and for all the recent reports of good condition, I can't say the same. The greens were destroyed...imo. It seemed as the morning tee times were jumping up and down and slamming there clubs into the greens. There were some serious cuts/gashes, tons of pitch marks unfixed, and it appeared some serious overwatering that footprints were deep.

Fairways were ok, but not a single divot fixed.

We played the front twice because the skins game was holding up the whole course. Ranger said they caused a 3-4 tee time delay.

Around what time did that skins game tee off at? If it's the one I think it is...that travels around to different city courses...I check their website to make sure I don't book a course they are playing that day. Seriously. Made the mistake of getting behind them at Cave Creek once.

There is a skins game every Saturday at Aguila. I think it tees at 11 or noon.

Ahhh, I was thinking of a different group of slugs then. But thanks for the heads-up!
