2019 Phoenix Area Course Conditions

Encanto on Tuesday. Fairways and greens are pure. Greens were running very fast. Bermuda areas, especially green side, were thin, making chipping pretty difficult if you missed left or right. Well worth putting into the muni card rotation.

I played Encanto this morning and agree on all fronts. The only issue with the course is some of the bunkers. Greens were best I have seen them.

Legends at Arrowhead today. What a dump. Bunkers had more goose sh!t in them than sand. Greens slow with a ton of ball marks. Fairways had a lot of thin dead spots. For prime season, this place is disappointing. Funny thing is, the cart lackey said it was in terrific shape. Wouldn't play again for free.

The last time I played there, on at least 3 greens (8, 9, and 18 maybe?) you could not hit a putt of more than 3 feet from anywhere on the green without striking a goose turd.

In an extremely crowded field for the worst course in the Valley it may be fighting its way to the top. A poor design (from memory, I admittedly haven’t played there in several years) with only mildly interesting greens as its main feature coupled with what everyone that plays are consistently crap conditions and a relatively high price. It really is trying to standout amongst whatever Phantom Horse is called now, Biltmore and places like Kokopelli.

Was forced to play Ocotillo this weekend....it was an absolute dump. Since Mickelson and OB Sports have taken over it has become a cesspool. It used to be in good shape, decent value and decent service. Not anymore. The most noticeable things: the course was just dirty - things/trash thrown everywhere, things in disrepair, dirty bathrooms, etc; you now have to pay extra for range ball; terrible service; no ranger to be seen to address POP; bunkers were hard as rock or full of sand/dirt that was too soft and caused plug balls; the tees look like they had not been cut in over a week; the greens even worse - just destroyed with pitch marks, etc; fairways with goose/coot s*** and torn to shreds.

Has anyone played Tatum Ranch lately? Interested to hear how everything is going out there. Any members here on WRX?

I'm thinking of signing up for their summer membership. I've done it before but not for a couple years. It's a pretty good deal. $1500 for 5 months.

Longbow in decent shape. Greens a bit marked up but rolling OK, albeit a bit slower than they looked.

That Tatum Ranch deal is interesting. Any other costs over and above the $1,500 like cart fee, F&B, etc? Any idea on their guest rate?

And any other courses in the east valley that offer something similar for the summer?

Thanks in advance.

When I was a summer member a couple of years ago, it was the following:

- $15 for an electric cart, $7 for a pull cart and you CANNOT bring your own. Nothing extra to carry.

- guest rate after May was $40, including cart

- must spend $200 in restaurant/bar over the 5 months.

- there's reciprocals at some other courses including Legend Trail, Eagle Mountain, and Terravita

- the only downside is that summer members can't get a tee time prior to 09:00. However, if the course isn't busy (a lot in the summer) they will sometimes let you go play prior to 9:00 depending on who's working in the pro shop.

I don't know of any other summer deals in the NE valley but I heard Legend Trail does something.

I played Encanto this afternoon. The greens were in pretty much perfect condition. Fairways and tees were great. The greenside hardpan/scalped dormant Bermuda areas are really frustrating. Would have been nice if they had overseeded more than 4' around the perimeter of the greens. If you miss a green and end up in one of the hardpan areas, the ball rolls like heck past the green and then you can't get a club under the ball.

3 hrs 45 min as a walking foursome. I like the layout and the walker-friendly flat land, but the greenside hardpan (plus the usual concrete bunkers) just took away a lot of enjoyment for me today.

Great trip. They will all be perfect. Only thing that may be less than perfect are bunkers at Papago can be variable

Papago is very good right now except sand in a lot of bunkers is thin. Greens are very fast. Tees and fairways are above average but show some wear from play.

Course is packed all day with new clubhouse. It is quite impressive what they have created. Should only get better, except tee times will become tougher to book for us locals.
