The only punching I've run into in the Valley are some small tines at a few courses that don't affect much, if anything. In Arizona, overseeding takes the place of what aerating is done for in most other places.

Played GCU on Sunday. Course was brown but greens were green. Worst shape I've seen it since it was called Maryvale. One of the guys in the proshop said they planted some new grass or something and it's been unseasonably too cold at night and it isn't growing. Should be greener once it warms up. Greens were good and bunkers were good. Pace was surprisingly well.

Played Lookout Mountain on Monday. Course gave us run down/left over carts. One cart died at the 9th hole and had to pushed up the hill to the 10th hole. Other than that, course was in really good shape. Greens were smooth. Finally the 10th hole didn't eat my shorts. Not my favorite course in the valley but good once or so a year to do something different.

My Current WITB:

Ping Glide 4.0 Stealth 50,54,58 – TT Dynamic Gold

Legacy this afternoon. Got around in 4 hours despite a small traffic jam on 15. Course overall good condition. Greens were fantastic. A few random spots browning in fairways, but nothing unreasonable considering it’s basically June. Found a pair of bunkers and they were both bad - hard and little to no sand. All bunkers on the course looked that way. Other than that, a great day. Always enjoy a round out at Legacy.

Cattail at Whirlwind is in the single worst shape/condition I have ever seen. Corroborated by the member I was playing with. The fairways are soaked/drenched beyond belief..in turn ruining the ground, turning muddy mess everywhere. Carts have no choice but to drove thru, tearing it up even more.

Greens slow as can be...8 maybe.

Do not play.

End of round update....just pathetic how bad the course is.....bunkers filled with water, divots in the fairway filled with water, torn up patches everywhere, rotting evident, greens at best an 8. The member I was playing with kept apologizing...

Yes, Chrome Softs. Problem with SD every last time has been horrible pace. 5 hours each time. The only way I will be able to play there is first off, which I hate, but not as much as I hate slow play.

They are aerifying 6/3 and 6/4, then small tines 7/8.

Starfire early this morning. Not exactly my first choice of courses to play, but my high handicap friend lives right by it and enjoys it, so I decided to give it a try with him.

I was actually impressed with how good of condition the entire course was in. Greens rolled nice, fairways all had very few if any imperfections, sand was fine. Course appears not to be affected by the heat yet. You could tell they did water the heck out of it last night though. Lots of ponded water around the cartpaths, but the fairways rolled out fine. I recall playing it around this time last year and it was pretty beat.

Finished in about 3:10 as a threesome with pretty much no waiting until a little bit on the last 3 holes.

The layout/design, especially on the front (King nine), is pretty horrible IMO but I played well, enjoyed the great pace and conditions.

yeah...the price attracts a lot of play...slow play. Unlike you, I love first few off...having breakfast in the grill by 930 is awesome. But compared to Whirlwind...I would rather play a 6hr round at SD!!!!!!!!!

Heading out in a couple of days and have TPC Stadium, Papago, and Wickenburg Ranch lined up. I know Papago greens are running really fast. How are the conditions of the other 2 courses?

So I have had quite a back and forth with the GM at Southern Dunes after I left the course Sunday after 7 holes. It's been a good conversation, and he has been both sincere and understanding with my perception of slow play after Sunday's issues and my previous round which was 5 hours. Realistically they may be doing what is possible with a course that plays difficult for higher handicaps yet attracts a lot of just those golfers. Their goal course pace is 4:29, which on the one hand is probably realistic and yet on the other hand is quite slow, especially if that becomes the goal. That means if you are just 15 minutes slow, you only finished just 15 minutes off the pace, but you also just had a 4:45 round.

His solution is the same as mine: if I want to get around at a good pace (to me, that is less than 4 hours), I will need to play early, either as part of the "Pacesetter" program (the first hour of tee times for the day) or otherwise. I'm going to try this Sunday at 8, which shouldn't be crowded since they just punched. I know the greens will be sandy and bumpy.

Southern Dunes is interesting in terms of the layout, my favorite in AZ btw. I have walked several rounds there in under 2:30... However the course absolutely crushes poor players through bunkers in spots that have no effect on good players... Take #2 #4, #10, 14, 16 as examples. I never have the slow play issue because I always pursue the earliest tee tee possible, but I can see how this course grinds poor amateur play to a halt later in the day. I think 14 is the biggest culprit. I can imagine a guy being in 3 bunkers before even being near the green, while a wanna be bomber waits for the green to clear with a group already waiting behind them.

Longbow today. Really pure right now, greens just ever so bumpy but everything else is perfect. $45. Teed off at 12:45, finished front in an hour, paired up on the back and finished at 3:00. I think Longbow is sneakily links-ish as it really gives you a lot of options on how to play most holes, especially around the green.
