2019 Phoenix Area Course Conditions

Southern Dunes .... Greens are recovering finally. They were shaggy and slow today but had a lot of new growth. They did a small tines aeration July 1 and a large tine aeration July 8th. They looked MUCH better today and should be really good by next weekend.

Pretty much any course in the Phoenix area won't be crowded/slow on a non-holiday Monday morning in August unless they have some kind of event or outing going on. If by single you mean wanting to get put in an open slot in a group around your choice of time and not having it be a 5 hour round, then yes, you should have zero problem anywhere unless you get unlucky with one random group of morons on the course. If you mean want to play by yourself and not have to wait on anyone, perhaps play late morning or early afternoon, it will be hot, most courses except for maybe a handful of the top-ranked courses will be generally wide open on a Monday past mid-morning. If you want to be first off the tee early in the morning, this is easy to get at a lot of courses on a Monday if you book it as soon as the booking window opens.

Depends on what you want but if you're more into the party scene I'd go with the W. If you're more into the pool/resort scene then there's a thread just below this talking about the Hyatt having a great area. Phoenician is also nice. If you want more of desert type feel and don't care about being way away from being downtown then I'd suggest Boulders or Four Seasons at Troon North. Since you're going to State Farm it is going to be a long freaking way regardless of where you stay. JW Marriott might be a nice compromise due to how close it is to the 101 and where you'd be headed for the concert.

The Diamondbacks aren't in town so there's no compelling reason to stay downtown that time of the year even if you are a baseball fan.

Talking Stick itself is fine. Think of it like an aging Las Vegas resort. Not terrible but not high end either.

Great info. I was hoping to play a really nice course so maybe Four Seasons at Troon North would be a good idea too. My wife likes the pools which is what attracted me to Hyatt. I know where Talking Stick is and I figured with a casino and Top Golf there near it would give us something to do later on at night.

In search of solid contact...

Agreed on Quintero... For whatever cons are on the list if you are looking for the number 1 pro being "scenic desert views" Quintero is King.

Hey guys,

New to the site. Have been a lurker forever and still pretty much am. Appreciate all the guys that take time out of their days to fill this forum with such great info!

3 psychopaths and I are coming to Scottsdale for a long weekend. I'm coming from LA, others are coming from the midwest. All under 10 handicappers. Just would like some insight on what I should expect coming down.

6:35am tee time at Troon North Cholla, 1:30pm tee time at Quintero on friday

6:25am/12:00pm tee times at the Cholla course in WeKoPa

I understand the temps are why I am getting such good deals. I also came to find out about aeration schedules and think I have done a pretty solid job avoiding any terrible course conditions as well. I am new to this side of the country, so outside of what I have read on here I don't really know what to expect. None of us have played desert golf before, so we are all very excited. Hopefully we will have some good putting surfaces as LA public golf is an absolute joke for the most part (for more reasons than the greens).

We have dinner scheduled at Hand Cut Burgers and Chop house which was a recommendation from a friend.

Any insight on other activities we can fit in or places to eat or mainly drink, would love to hear!

Thanks a lot.

Assuming you mean Troon North Pinnacle Course, not Cholla? If so, Troon North Pinnacle Course is my favorite desert course in AZ. You'll have a blast there. I believe they sanded the greens not too long ago, but the greens usually roll well there. It's a top notch facility all the way through. I am not a fan of We Ko Pa's Cholla course at all. I believe every par 4/5 tee shot until you reach hole 11 or 12 is a blind tee shot. You can see about 200 yds and then you're guessing/looking at the GPS after that. It is not an enjoyable course to play. There are the Par 3's and maybe 2 holes that are right in front of you. Bring a lot of golf balls and plan on not hitting driver a lot. I played it end of May for the first time and was not impressed by the course. The starter said it best, most people play the course, then want to go out and replay it in order to score better. The Saguaro Course is tough, but I remember it being more enjoyable. (It's been a few years since I've played it).

As far as what else to expect...if you guys are playing 36 holes both days, you can expect pain and an early bed time. Those afternoon tee times are going to absolutely drain you. It's going to be 105-110 degrees with some humidity for the lingering monsoon season (It's 113 degrees with 15% humidity today in the East Valley). Drink tons of water (Gallon/day at least) and drink water the night before. If you show up hungover or not hydrated, you're going to be hurting. Physically cramping, light headed, etc.

As far as course conditions, you should be good with Troon North. I know Quintero punched their greens end of May/beginning of June, so they should be good. Greenskeeper.org has a message saying We Ko Pa Saguaro will be aerating their greens from 7/17 - 7/31 so you may run into some conditions there. Cholla was aerated 7/1 - 7/16. You can always call the golf shops and ask too. Most are forthcoming about the course conditions in my experience in regards to maintenance.

Not sure how old you guys are, but Old Town Scottsdale is the bar/club scene in Scottsdale. You'll find fun there. Have fun, you psychopaths!

Yes, I did mean the Pinnacle course. My apologies!

I have gotten a lot of mixed reviews about Quintero. Mostly negative remarks on here, but a few golf buddies in my office all said it is awesome. I think what sold me on it having never played Desert golf before, we were really looking for some solid views.

We all played baseball in college together and are now finally out of school. Between the ages of 23-26. No golf scheduled for Sunday, so I believe we are going to make sure to see the town Saturday night. After a very long nap of course.

I have been following along on greenskeeper.org, but it is nice to know that they are willing to answer condition questions. Although with this information, I am feeling pretty good about it!

Thank you for your input, it is greatly appreciated.

No problem, sounds good! You guys are still young enough where you can bounce back. I haven't played Quintero but it's up there for the views. My Dad came into town to visit and we were going to play it, but they punched the greens, so we weren't going to deal with that. Have fun!

Snagged an airbnb on E Camelback towards the river. Made reservations for friday at the Chop House place. Really would not mind finding a great sushi place as well.

I think all of us are on the same page that the club scene is probably not the direction we want to head. Would love to find a few cool bars in Old Town Scottsdale so we don't have to worry about a far trek back home.

Sushi Brokers is my favorite sushi place in the area (there's one in Arcadia) but if you want to stay near Old Town there's Roku. I haven't been to Geisha A Go Go but people seem to like it. High end meal I'd recommend Virtu. Nice but not as high end is Citizen Public House. Sumo Maya for something different in regards to Sushi/fusion. Bourbon and Bones or Second Story for steaks. Second Story also has an excellent bar. *note-I'm 20 years older than you and the places I went when I was your age mostly NLE but, on the bright side I also played baseball in college so maybe we have something in common

I agree with everything that az has said. I have lived in Old Town area for 7 years now and am around the same age as you. As far as non clubby bars go, I would recommend Boondocks, Bevvy and The Hot Chick. The Hot Chick is right next door to Boondocks, so it is easy to bounce to the other bar etc. All of them will have a decent crowd, good scenery and most of them have games to play.

I'll second the Sushi Brokers recommendation. Closer to Old Town I really like Sushi J.

Looks like Sushi J is closed so don't waste your time driving there (like I did last night...).

Played Troon North Pinnacle Course today.

The good: Played as a 3-some behind a foursome in 3:40. Customer service and everything associated with the facility was top notch as always. The greens were in great condition for this time of year. Some yellow spots from divot marks but greens rolled well and were not burned out. Were firm but receptive to well struck iron shots. Some traces of sand/post overseed fertilizer? on the green but not enough to bother us. The front 9 was in better condition than the back 9. The only hole on the front 9 that looked like it was hurting was hole #9. Fairway was pretty burnt out throughout the hole. Definitely needs some tlc and watering.

(Hole #6 above)

The bad: The tee boxes were horrendous looking. I'd say 90% of the gold tee boxes were burnt out and shoddy looking. They were flat and playable, so I can't complain too much. They were definitely not picturesque lush green. Photo below.

Hole #14 was in the worst shape of the course. They over-watered the fairway in the left driving area and left the rest of the fairway to burn out.

I'd say the holes in the worst shape were #9, #14, #18. Lots of burnt out areas in the fairway. Luckily, I didn't have any bad lies due to conditions. I definitely got a mud ball on my drive on #14 but it the hole was playing as a 3 shot par 5 into the wind so my layup shot wasn't penalized too bad. I believe 2 of the non par 3 holes were cart path only. Overall the course was in pretty decent shape for the late summer AZ has had.

Not that anyone should care, but Starfire is cheap and the greens are OK, otherwise typical burnt conditions, $17 for 18, got around in 2 hours Saturday afternoon.
