Sharp Park Greens A+

So listened to the latest Feed the Ball Podcast and then talked with a buddy yesterday about how pure Sharp’s greens were.

 

Well played today and all I can say is wow! The fairways were scruffy, the tee boxes not cut short, but dear God the greens rolled GREAT!

 

I stayed around for another 20 minutes rolling putts and the practice green it was so good. Firm, fast, and true. I hope this is a sign to come.

Very atmospheric course, especially the old Mackenzie holes across the road.

Great to hear they are trying to get it into shape. The last time I was there there were more weeds than grass on the 'greens.' Hope they get a new irrigation system in there. I heard they don't even have sprinkler heads or an electronic irrigation system and the watering all has to get done by hand.

 

As for the holes across the road, those aren't part of the original course. From what I understand those holes were added when some of the holes were washed out near the ocean by a storm.

Yes it is correct that the new holes were not Mackenzie but seem very much in keeping with his style as they were built by his associate Jack Fleming. They are more Augusta like while the seaside holes are more Royal Melbourne-ish. But its a brilliant course if you can see past the rough fairways and greens. Lets hope they can save it.

Looks like the rain might dampen things this weekend, but I'd like to see these A+ greens while they last ;-)

The non-Mackenzie holes across the street were typically so swampy and beat up, I think I played temp greens there as often as not.

Sharp Park has the potential to be a great golf course. Its a course I started playing on many moons ago. There are some odd holes like #8, a 90 yard par 3. Felt like they finished 17 holes and decided to slap that hole in there in a corner to make it 18. I have friends who play there regularly and they love it.

The original 5th hole looks epic. Tee off from an island in the laguna to a split fairway? Honestly all of the old holes look great, I wish they could put them back...

Just went out to Sharp today...they punched the greens. :s Small plugs, but still sandy and not really rolling yet. Not sure how long they will take to recover. They are putting water on the fairways and it’s not by any means a dust bowl. It’s actually shaggy, not what I expected after the heat and lack of rain.

Hi all, looking for some info re: tee times and how closely they manage resident vs nonresident distinction. I'm regularly in the area and wanting to play the course but need to do so on a Monday, which appears reserved for residents? Has anyone been asked to show ID or anything when checking in/paying for a tee time? Thanks

They absolutely check the resident card for the greens fee, but there is not restriction on who can play on Monday.

I’ve walked up many a Monday and got on without a tee time. Shoot me a message if you have any questions.

Shouldn’t have trouble walking up on a Monday. Usually pretty sparse on weekdays there. Guarantee they’ll check for residency but the discount residents get isn’t too much.

I player there 2 weeks ago or so just when they reopen. Course was in good condition overall, greens were great !

Played Sharp today. Greens are fine...not "great", but not bad. They are 100% poa, so probably better to play there in the morning than the afternoon. Fairways are soft with a lot of different grasses...kikuyu all around as well.

Played there yesterday. Greens are officially bad imo. You cannot find a true roll outside of 3 feet anywhere on the course.

That said, the fairways are in pretty good shape for Sharp - and it's a TON of fun. One of the only courses you can get on these days, and it's $40 with a res card - so still A+ when the round is under 5 hours (which is like - 50/50).

I have a hard time believing those greens have actually rolled true at any time of day in the past 5 years based on my experiences haha
