What is your fairway finder club/shot

If its a must hit fairway then it has to be a long iron, preferably a modern DI type. They are just so damn straight, straighter than any fairway wood will ever be strike for strike.

My 100% fairway finder is my 3-iron. I can fall back on it when my driver and Franken-5 wood get a little wonky (i.e. the lefts) on me. It works perfectly well for my home tract where the back tees are a daunting 6900 yards, but on longer courses, it can be a little of an issue.

Frankly, I don't see how there's so many people that can say driver when some of the best players in the world wouldn't. The only reason I could see is if you hit driver under 230 yards where then you need the distance. For me, it's Tiger's shot - stinger long iron (would be a 2 iron when I get one but currently my 20 degree 3)

I would suggest it's because most of us are not best players in the world. Golf is not my primary life's activity, so I don't get in the practice or play time as the pros.

 

In practice, I focus on getting my tee shots into the fairway. I have confidence in my driver, and more peace of mind over ball than with FWs.

 

I put my ball atop a wooden tee on the smooth tee box grass, and then my driver gives me a smooth draw. My miss is a slight push into the first cut right. Hitting a driver off a tee box is ideal ball-stroking conditions.

 

If I have a short par 4 with a super-tight and/or short landing area, I may go with a 4H. But, driver is what works for me normally. You play your game, I'll play mine.
