Random Bandon Thread

While we were there last week I asked about the greens.  The PD pro said Bandon had to get emergency punched because they didn't get the fall job done last year due to weather.  He also said this last few months was the most rain they've had in that time period since the resort opened.  They had weeks at a time where there was standing water on the greens, not much you can do there.

I feel like we are not far off from someone on Twitter or Reddit suggesting that they knew the area would get a lot of rain so they should have installed Subair systems.  The rationality of the internet.

Auto two putt on the plinko board! I was up there almost exactly two years ago and I need to go back. It would still be great even with those greens!

I just received an email from the resort saying that our rounds o  Badon Dunes will be getting a 25% refund since they are the worst at the resort.

 

Good proactive move on their part.

Got the same email. We only play BD once but it’s the first day on 4/12. Still a good move on their part imo.

 

But like others have said, I’m not stressing about the greens. Making the Mecca for the first time, I just want to experience all Bandon has to offer. Some greens not being in ideal condition isn’t gonna phase me. Will I miss a putt bc of the greens? Possibly. Will it bother me? Not one bit bc I’d rather be there than not.

First 36 done.

 

Greens at Old Mac had been solid time aerated and sanded recently. It didn't really affect play other than being a little on the slow side.

 

The first green at Sheep had several bad spots but the rest were in decent shape. The poa transition continues.

 

Trails and Pacific tomorrow.

Took a walk around the resort in the evening this week. As others have posted, #2 green at Bandon Dunes doesn’t look great. It appears to have dried out a bit this past weekend when we got a break from the rain. #1 also had a few small patches, but not nearly as bad. Just a ton of rain this past month and hard to regrow grass in the winter here!

 

 

On the other hand, the new Shorty’s is looking just about ready!

The greens at both Trails and Pacific are for the most part on very good shape. 11 at Pacific is bad and there was one at Trails as well, but I forget which one.

I’ve seen the blue / orange tees set up over there from time to time, but can’t recall seeing the black / green / golds over there. I always assumed it had less forced carry, but not sure.

I'm most interested in how BD greens will be end of month when I get there, but I suspect it will be hard to gauge right now since they supposedly did a full punch 4/2. The course manager (whoever they transferred me to when i asked about aeration schedule and course conditions) was transparent and helpful. When I said I had booked six rounds end of month - 2x PD, 2x BD, 1x Trails and 1x OM because I personally think SR is well below the others and prefer a double at one of our two favorites, he still recommended 1x BD and 1x SR or double elsewhere. While most greens are very playable/enjoyable, he said 6 greens on BD are in bad shape and will need about 6 weeks to get in good shape.

 

I think the seasonal rates reflect the risk/demand and warrant more leeway on conditions during non-peak times, but I personally like seeing all condition related updates even if someone's complaining, speculating, or misinformed about what's going on. It helps me with planning and expectations.

Those tees were built when they were renovating #2 before the US Am a few years ago, and were in service for all tees for a year or so.  They do sometimes put the blue and gold tees there, but never the longer tees.  We played from up there on our fun round last week and it's a nice change, so give it a try.  Distance is not that far off from the other gold tees, and it's less harrowing of a carry.  You can hit a low running shot most of the way to the green.

I thought I read in Dream Golf that those tees were part of the original DMK design, but Mike didn't like them and they settled on the now regular location.  Maybe they just reinstated them when they were working on #2?  Or maybe I am misremembering...

Are you taking a caddy?  If not, then I would say yes, especially if you've never played.  But I like the books, and make notes for return trips to places.  I have buddies who never bother with them.

 

For me they were fun to have in advance and do some "pre-scouting" along with the course previews on the website.  You're in that 2 month window, where I was going through Bandon content everyday, some days multiple times, haha.

Is there a halfway house or beverage carts on the courses? I’m a type one diabetic and typically my blood sugar drops when walking. Just want to ensure after I finish the snacks in my bag that I would be able to purchase something during play if necessary.

No beverage carts, but there’s a snack shack on nearly every course. Bandon Dunes is the exception, but it comes back by the clubhouse at the turn. All the others have something on course that you pass multiple times.

Old Mac - don’t want to miss halfway house after the breathtaking 7th hole 

 

Pacific - halfway house located after 3 and routes back to it after 12

 

Trials - halfway house shared after 7 and 10 I think

 

Dont recall seeing one on Sheep but it routes back to the clubhouse after 11 and 13 where you can grab snacks

9 at sheep does not finish at the clubhouse. 11 does. 
 

9th green is the Southern most part of SR i believe.
